There's really no comparison. 40% of the population of Alaska is in the Anchorage metro area. Anchorage, at 286,000, is the 68th largest city in the USA. Billings is 244th largest, and Missoula doesn't make the top 275-- actually, at 68K, isn't even close.

Thank you for squishing my dreams....LOL! I cannot doubt your facts. I actually did not realize that Anchorage was that big, interesting.

Indeed. Still, I welcome another Apple retail outlet - though I predict it will kill the Mac Store down on Dimond Blvd, unless they fire all the surly hipsters that work there.

Dimond has gone to hell ever since the gang jerk-offs started offing each other in and out of Dimond mall.

I know "Gangs in Alaska?".. Yep.

Does that mean online order shipping to AK would be charged for tax?

considering there's no state sales tax and I doubt apple would care enough to update their databases for the towns that do have local sales tax, I doubt it. Anchorage has no sales tax, prob never will, and most orders going there anyways so it wouldn't change anything.

Hey it might be 300 some miles away from Fairbanks bit I'll take what I can get lol

could you imagine a big metal and glass storefront in Fairbanks winter? -45 and people would get stuck to the side of the building LOL. It'd go from daring kids to lick the flag pole to daring them to lick the Apple Store HAHA.

God knows there are plenty of Mac users. Ever go into a Kaladi Brothers? It's like a promotional event for Apple :D

Definitely! UAA is a similar story. I imagine there are even more in bigger, 'hipper,' cities.

I went to Tap Root last night and the bouncer (older guy with overalls and a huge beard) was playing Words With Friends on his iPad.

Actually, the 2010 Anchorage metro population is 380,000..... and Anchorage is home to the University of Alaska-Anchorage with about 17,000 students. Apple always considers the proximity of a university and average income when locating one of it's famous Apple stores anywhere. Anchorage easily qualifies for this. There was a list of top cities on the net without a Apple store and Anchorage was in the top 10 of those most likely to get one or need one.

Interesting. Wouldn't be surprised if one showed up there in the next year or two.

Apple is everywhere. Next Apple will be opening a store in the Serengeti.
You never know. Next OS is named Lion.

It appears West coast online FedEx orders come through AK. They should be able to maintain a good supply of products.

That's pretty good movement. Seems they're flown from HK to AK. I always thought they were shipped.

It would probably take a cargo ship weeks to get from China to west coast US. They're slow, and they stop all over the place. Even if one went straight from coast to coast without stopping in any other port, it'd probably take at least a week... but there are thousands of products from hundreds of manufacturers on most cargo ships, so it's going to make a lot of stops along the way.

Alaska's airport is a major cargo hub, evidently second in the United States only to Memphis, and sixth in the entire world (after Memphis, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul and Paris CDG). That's why so many international orders go through there.
