I have one at home and one at the office, my office one has to go through two walls to reach me, so I am hoping for something with a stronger signal strength and higher bandwidth that would really make my new 3.4GHz i7 iMac seem as fast as my Mac Pro that I have at home, when surfing the Internet. My Mac Pro is right next to my base station at home, though....very very fast.

The biggest change has got to be to fix the power supply system within it. It's like the old dead timecapsule problem - they die after a while.

So:
- Fix breaking power supply unit (a must!)
- Enable WDS bridging to work from other non-Apple router (unlikely!)
- Enable a usb device other than just printer to be connected (unlikely)
- Enable video streaming via HDMI (about as likely as Apple TV getting a 3.5mm jack output. No chance.)

I hope this isn't their way of "fixing" the wifi problem associated with Lion.

Some people have WiFi problems, not everyone. It isn't the router.

----------

Why not buy appletv since is almost the same price?? What is point of airport express?

To extend your wireless network when you are home. To have a router when you travel.

----------

I'd like to see TB at least on the AEBS

So you can transfer data from your TB devices really fast to the AEBS, and then really slowly over wireless to the devices that actually use the data?

Seriously, WiFi will be a bottleneck. Why do you want an interface faster than that?

Ah, because the  tv is not a Access point (1) able to extend a network (2), nor does it have anything to do with the routing of a network.

It can only play content

...and the AppleTV doesn't have USB printing. Some people see the Express as an audio streaming device only. I have two of them and one is used in this manner (ok, fine there's a printer hooked up). I also have an AppleTV right next to the thing. Why? AppleTV doesn't have an electronic audio out, only optical. This is a significant problem. One would think you could get an adapter. Not so simple. Optical out is not necessarily a two channel thing. I did find a decoder, which interpretted the optical signal and turned it into a two channel signal compatible with the self powered speakers in that room, but it would have cost as much as the Express.

Maybe there's something to this idea of an AppleTV with USB printing and router capabilities. A hybrid of sorts? Not that there's much hardware crossover between the two; or is there?

My personal wishlist for the next AExp would be:

  1. 1000BaseT ethernet port
  2. Simultaneous dual band support
  3. Final 802.11n spec (not that it really matters)
  4. Roaming network support (not sure if the current AExp can/can't do this)

Crap, i just about my 3rd one last week. They dont seem to last longer than 1,5 years but i rely on them as i cant figure out how to set up others lol
I'm running on 4 years this month with mine, which is very luck, I'm aware :D

It gets flakey in very hot weather, and sometimes Fast User Switching is useful to get it to reconnect, but overall - I love this thing.

The iTunes library sharing to other devices, the audio out to the main stereo ... great stuff!

Looking forward to what's next if it's reasonably priced. Would love to see external drive support

Nothing to see here people. The current Airport Express IS the second generation. There was an 802.11b/g only Airport express, with no n.

I was thinking the same thing, but I'm also thinking that the addition of N was maybe considered to be a revision of the first generation AirPort Express? (kinda like the MBA wasn't considered second-generation until the wedge design was introduced last year)

You might be having power issues. Is it plugged directly into an outlet or into a surge protector? Even a surge protector might not be enough as dips in power can be hard on electronics as well.

That's not to say they couldn't beef up the power block, but if you are seeing other electronics fail over time then I would take a look at the source.

What possible use could you foresee by adding Thunderbolt to a Wifi device? USB 2.0 is faster than 802.11n already.

I was going to say the same exact thing. I don't think people realize what Thunderbolt even is or does, or what it would be useful for. (And wireless Thunderbolt connections? LOL.)

It's like the new Apple display... suddenly people think it's this revolutionary new kind of display that has Thunderbolt.... which it really only acts as extension cord for the Thunderbolt port you already have on what you dock with it. It's just also the new display port, so of course new Apple displays will update the connection port.

Someone mentioned HDMI out... again, how would that be useful? Wireless HDMI isn't a great technology. Boxes like Apple TV and Roku buffer the content giving you a high quality stream. For the Airport Express to give a decent user experience, it would have to be able to buffer the content. It's the same with wireless surround sound. You just lose something from point A to B. It's not awful, but it's lesser.

A new form factor would be about the only change I'd really love to see. Something more stick like. The square shape is a pain at times if trying to hide it behind a piece of furniture.

Really though, I'd rather see them fix the damned wi-fi issues in OSX, like, ever version has had issues and they seem to be going backwards. At Least Lion doesn't always want me to enter my password again when it loses the connection, but the trade off it it loses it more often than SL.

Apple should just make the USB port of the AE usefull and let it charge the iPhone / iPod / iPad.

Would be a nice travel device: router, access point, charger. Perfect for any traveller arriving in a hotel where there is network but no wifi.

I really hope the new Airport Express will be a Powerline-product!
Powerline is nowadays more reliable and faster than wireless networks, and other companies are already making Powerline devices with Wifi.

The Airport Express will be exactly that, but the advantages of an audio-output and USB-port would be new for a Powerline device which makes it also really interesting for non-Apple users too (pulling new customers towards Apple).

And why would Powerline be implemented in the Airport Express you say?

1. Extend a wireless network by using the Powerline signal (current AE's need Gigabit-input (not often available) or to replicate the existing wifi-signal, which is often weak because you are extending it with a reason, and therefore providing slow internet. With a signal from the grid using Powerline, which is provided from a second AE at your router, you have a hassle-free, fast, reliable connection which reaches further than your existing wireless network could offer.

2. Router in the basement or at another wifi-unfriendly location in your house? Using Powerline you can place the AE wherever you want internet.

3. Don't like wireless signals? Interference? Frequencies too crowded? Too slow? Powerline is the solution while you do it the Apple-way including it's advantages.

4. No ethernet-connection for your Apple TV at your TV, while you need the network for streaming and the wireless signal is too weak or too unreliable (for you HD-videos)? Powerline!

5. Future Apple products which implement Powerline??? iMac, Mac Pro, Apple TV, Macbooks,...? Saves you the cable clutter and hassle, which is exactly the Apple-way of thinking.

As you can see: Powerline can profit from Wifi (et vica versa) and Powerline can profit from the Gigabit connection (et vica versa). Add the existing USB-port for printers (and external drives??) and the audio-output and it's a wonderful device which introduces something really new since it's debut.

uhhh, to extend a wifi nextwork? to create a small wifi network based on an ethernet IN? maybe? possibly? try doing that w/ your ATV and get back to me.

Airport Express

Is there any validation/timeframe out there for this upgrade to Airport Express? I bought one today and I'm considering returning it and waiting.

Thanks.

Any update/confirmation on this rumor please?

I wanted to buy an Airport Express. I went to an Apple Store in Virginia and they were out of stock and "had no clue" (quote) when they'd be receiving more.

The Best Buy nearby was also out. Amazon states 2-5 weeks shipping delays.

Should I wait or should I order one from the online Apple Store (the only place that seems to have it in stock)?

Thanks

I was at the Apple Store in SoHo today, it was suspiciously absent there too. Amazon's still showing long ship times but the Apple site lists it as being in stock.

My current G version is still running strong after many, many years (at least 4 but possibly more), I just want to upgrade to have an N network now that all my devices will be able to use it. Of course, I don't want to wait...

I'm in the same situation. My old AE died several weeks ago and I've wanted to get a new one, but of course want the updated product if it's coming.

Amazon still shows several weeks' wait. The DataVision site lists the current AE unit as "discontinued." - But I just checked with the Apple store, and they indeed say they have them in stock. Confusing.

Hmm

I was just looking for one of these and noticed the retailers were saying 1-2 months or out of stock, which led me back here.

I need something like this to stream Apple Lossless to my hi-fi. The last one of these I bought left a bad taste in my mouth as it died for no reason after about a year of (not much) use. I pulled it apart and did something to get it working again (I forget now) but it died again a few months later...I felt like I just wasted money.

Reading reviews, it seems many other suffered the same fate. Hopefully they will have that problem fixed.

Should I just buy an AppleTV since it's same price?

I have four (they each have a 2" cable that plugs directly into the wired jack into house system, so the wireless connections are minimal with most of the signal using the wires to do the heavy lifting. So no long throws to the router.) that were purchased in 2004. One crapped out and the other three are working fine and I love them. However, we are looking to buy four new ones as I would hate for any more to fail, so we are just getting out in front of it. And we are patiently waiting (and watching this space) for the new units before going forward.

Any further updates on this?

I was initially going to go with Sonos for distributed music, but decided on AirPlay due significant equipment cost savings. Before heading out to pick up 4 AE units today, I figured I'd check here on MR first just in case and came across this thread.

Also, is there a consensus that people's units are dying suddenly due to power surges? Couldn't a surge protector prevent against this?
