I have absolutely zero interest in folding phones, and recognize that some people want this, but at the same time don't want Apple to neglect regular non-folding iPhones in favor of the folding ones.

That's one of my main concerns around this.
I think it's virtually impossible that Apple would neglect, and especially stop making, non-folding iPhones once they start making foldable models.

All smartphone manufacturers are vying for who can develop the best AI for their phones. If Apple didn't compete in this as well, they wouldn't sell nearly as many iPhones in the very near future, maybe not even enough to support the iPhone line at all.
And no one is there yet. This is such a fast-moving field that being "first" today or "best" means nothing in the scale of things.
We saw Deep Seek come out of nowhere just last month and develop a leading model at a fraction of the cost. We see OpenAi telling us that without allowing them to further utilize copywritten material without consequence, the AI race is over. We are at a nascent moment in AI, where we are now has no impact on where we will be next year or the year after. Apple is not behind, and no one is ahead. They have time to get it right. It's not going anywhere that will not become cheaper and better tomorrow without Apple batting an eye or spending a dime.

Good to hear about more developments regarding the foldable device. Eagerly waiting to see the foldable from Apple!

Do most phone customers even care about this? I know I don't. The people I know don't. In fact I have it turned off because I don't want it wasting resources on my phone.

I suspect the average person couldn't give a single crap about AI. They care more about things like camera quality and the ergonomics of the phone.

That may be true, but nevertheless if Apple wasn't trying to compete in this AI "space", as they call these things, there's a real chance that if AI on smartphones eventually takes off, Apple would be left holding the bag, or something.

In some ways, Apple actually does seem to be somewhat further behind the AI development curve than some other major players, so they don't have a real choice to go back to slacking off or taking a laissez faire attitude, or devoting only tiny teams to AI, or whatever it is that's put them where they are now.
