Apple, Nvidia, and AMD (and soon Intel with their GPUs) have reaped much of the economic value of TSMC's advancements (TSMC has a couple hundred billion market cap compared to ~$3 trillion of the prior three companies, combined) and now TSMC is flexing.

It's time for the US companies to band together and bring the manufacturing home, or pay TSMC's rising prices.

Makes sense and not surprised.

I'll continue to buy Apple products; a new Mx Mac Mini and a Watch for the near term.

Longer term...maybe an Apple Car.
Anybody here pretending they will leave Apple over a price hike is blowing smoke. They will do the same as you and me, continue to buy their products. I prefer to have Apple, period. I work in the automotive industry and the price of cars has gone up due to the inventory shortage. Sales have been going through the roof because people still want their car.

If prices do rise on already expensive product it starts to become out of reach for a lot of customers. You will find more and more people not upgrading on a yearly basis and keeping their existing products for much longer.
I hope you believe what you're saying because high prices haven't stopped Tesla's sales. Nice "logic" but you're way wrong.

The XS is still a beast, why upgrade, I for one won't, for what, it does all the things an iPhone must do.
Except it offers limited Airtag functionality. And what it misses I prefer to have an iPhone 11 or newer just to get those functions.

Apple will need to pay more for the chips in its devices and may pass rising costs on to its customers, according to sources speaking to Nikkei Asia.

TSMC, Apple's main chip supplier, is in the process of increasing its prices following wider inflation in the industry caused by the global chip supply shortage. The company's planned price rises are said to be the most substantial chip price hikes in a decade.

Late last month, DigiTimes reported that these price rises could hit sooner than expected, with the iPhone 13 lineup being more expensive due to increased chip costs. Even so, it appears that the effect of increased chip prices will not fully impact Apple until next year.
Since Apple is producing their products on a such a massive scale, it's hard to say they would need to raise prices?

Die hard Apple guys don't care anyway, +300$ on all devices, all fine, the winner takes it all \o/.

While YouTubers, celebs etc get them for free it's us peasants who will pay for it all at the end
I can't speak for celebs but I will say I don't think you're being fair to YouTubers. Yes while they get stuff free to review YOU get to watch their reviews free of charge so YOU can make an informed decision as to whether you want to buy it or not. You're not paying one red cent to watch their reviews. And before you say those big YouTubers say what the companies want them to say there are still a lot of big YouTubers who give honest reviews. Max Tech is just one great example of an honest big YouTuber.

People wanted Intel R&D to fail so badly.

Your wishes became true. That’s what happens when one company dominates leading edge processes.

People are used to inflating prices in this sector. Just give them a heads up trough media outlets like this one to prepare them for the next hike. It worked for more than a decade and will likely continue to do so. This is capitalism 1+1.

In other news:

TSMC increased its chip prices by 3% for Apple while others faced 20% rises

"may pass rising costs on to customers", seriously?
I just tapped Like on this comment, and was confronted with something new:

Seriously, MacRumors? We have to confirm a Like now?

Would not the crucial component prices paid by Apple to the suppliers be frozen by now, so late in the production cycle?

Perhaps this played-into Apple's decision to delay the roll-out of CSAM.

Perhaps they thought a Double Whammy would scare-off too many potential iPhone 13 buyers !

As long as we don’t know the exact chip price 20% don’t mean anything. If the chip price is 15 dollar and got increased to 18, Apple will probably raise the price by 50 bucks.

I've got my 16" MBP, and iPad 12.9 M1 ... only further upgrade I really want is the watch. If need be I can go another year on my 11 Pro Max after lockdown in the UK stopped me upgrading, but taught me the old phone still works even tho a new one comes out :D
