Heh.... Well, if you looked at the salaries paid to GeekSquad employees, you'd quickly see why they "don't know crap". Anyone who knows what they're doing with technology should easily be able to find better pay than that!

Best Buy really screws over customers who use their services -- charging rates that make it appear you're hiring experts, yet pocketing way too much of the total earnings.

(I admit I'm biased, because I have my own small business doing on-site computer service and consulting work. But it's like I've always told people.... I'm glad GeekSquad exists, because they drive business my way without me having to spend advertising dollars to get it. I'd say a good 40% of or so my clients previously used GeekSquad at least once and were dissatisfied with the outcome. But it put the idea in their head that such on-site businesses do exist, and caused them to start asking around for alternatives -- whereupon they found me.)

your people must work for peanuts. these days it's cheaper to buy a new computer than pay a tech guy to check it out

Absolute FACT!

I was working at BB when the 360 originally came out. I heard our Sales Manager tell the supervisor of the "Media" dept (Media is where they sell games, DVDs, and music) that if a customer wasn't going to buy the PSP, an extra controller, and at least two games, to NOT SELL IT.

simple solution

buy 360, controller and 2 games. return them right after you buy them. keep the 360

Has anyone or anywhere updated this story since the "this rumour may have been crushed" posting?

And, if the rumor is proven to be true, anyone have any idea how those people still on Best Buy's waiting lists will be dealt with? It's a potentially tricky situation given that they've actually taken people's money to hold a place in a queue that may have become non-existent.

Crunchgear is now recanting, saying this rumor is potentially busted.

all these notes screaming.. and its apparently old (wrong) news.

Tim Cook directly e-mailed some guy that works for Best Buy to let him know the rumour that he leaked is false? Frankly, that seems less likely than the original rumour, which I think is why people are being slow to acknowledge it.

It's the Wal-Mart of electronics. Lowest price, but in the end you get the experience you pay for. If I buy a cable or cheap DVD, I don't need a $50 protection plan...I mean...really?

BB is a far cry from the lowest price. In fact they gouge you pretty badly on price. Just try buying an HDMI cable there. Then compare against Amazon or Monoprice. You can always find a better price online (and not pay tax) than BB.

When I bought my 360, I had to buy it in a bundle, which was like 2% off the total price and was unable to return one item without returning the entire system.

The original rumor wherein a normal, run-of-the-mill Best Buy employee, was privy not only to the evil sales machinations of Best Buy's entire operation but also to the private opinions and plans of Apple's interim commander?

Er?

Is this true or another rumor?

If this is true, they deserve to go out of business if they don't fire tge managers. Quota of the day like that is just plain stupid, thats like saying we made enough money today so no more sales today guys.

If this is true how they run their business, its time to short this sucker.

yeah hdmi cables alone there are insanely priced. $40-$50 for a cable that can be had for less than $5 shipped to your house?

Then people should've been slow to acknowledge the original rumor, which Frankly seems less likely than the sky being a shade of hot pink on a normal sunny day.

Apple's got its own problems

This is exactly what i did. i went to a few BB's and they acted like they were doing me a favor by answering my questions about their ipad stock. seriously, it bordered on arrogance. so i thought about it and decided "screw it, i'll order from apple online and wait the 2-3 weeks."

the fact that i feel really good about my decision lets me know i did the right thing.

I ordered an iPad 2 on-line when the Apple store was out of stock and they said I should order one on-line. That was when the lead time was 4 - 5 weeks. I kept that order going even while the lead-time has been reduced to 2 - 3 weeks. I was told multiple times when I called Apple that I shouldn't cancel my original order, placed March 18, 2011, because all orders are shipped in the sequence in which Apple received them. But, I've not received my iPad 2, nor an email saying that they're shipping.

I'm going into the Apple store today to complain "vigorously".

So how do they turn down a sale? Do they pretend it's not in stock? Do they flat out say "sorry, I can't sell this to you without a PSP"? I just don't see how they can say that without the customer seeing through their ploy.

What they did at my BB is they held the product in the warehouse. It wasn't up front in stacks like you might think.

The person would walk up, say they wanted a 360. The Media supervisor would have ALREADY ahead of time instructed the blue-shirted staff to ask leading questions like, "Great. How many extra controllers do you want?" Or, "Awesome. Let me tell you about BB's PSP..."

And if the person said no to that, the BB employee would say, "OK, let me go get your 360." And the BB employee was instructed by the Sales Manager to pretend to go look for it and then come back and say, "Ooops. I'm sorry. It seems that we're all out. We must have sold the last one. Sorry about that."

Yes, you are correct... an excellent point ( I hadn't thought of it that way ).

At the end of the day, its Best Buy's store - and Apple must accept Best Buy's terms and conditions . If Apple don't like them then they can just withdraw their products from BB ( or try and negoitate ).

Or does it? Think about it. If a customer actually has an important job or at least one that requires them to be at work during normal biz hours they literally have no chance if they are all sold at 10p. But if they hold some back for Sun AM when you can stand in line at 8pm then it might make you think better of BB. Plus BB gets more buzz advertising they good stock on Sunday A.M. vs. 6 every other A.M.

Bottomline though is that these are BB's iPads to sell. It's not like BB is a preferred reseller and they big daily shipments and are holding those back. They are getting dribbles like everyone else.

Anyway, this story looks to be 100% B.S. like I always thought as Crunchgear as all but busted the rumor which it started.

The original rumor wherein a normal, run-of-the-mill Best Buy employee, was privy not only to the evil sales machinations of Best Buy's entire operation but also to the private opinions and plans of Apple's interim commander?

Er?

Some details in the original rumour, like claiming knowledge that Tim Cook is directly involved, may have been embellished (unless the guy works really high up in Best Buy), sure. I generally assume that when it comes to rumours. But I would expect someone who works for Best Buy to be aware of what's happening with stock in their store, and probably talked to or heard their manager complain about not getting any more shipments recently. How could you not be, when it's directly applicable to your job?

But getting an e-mail dispelling the rumour you started directly from Tim Cook, and then leaking that e-mail, especially if you're high up in Best Buy, seems unlikely.

I'm not saying either rumour is a sure bet, obviously, but I would say one is far more believable than the other (especially given that the bad press BB could receive from the first one gives them motivation to cover it up).

Now pull their products out of Walmart, Target and other large corporations that have destroyed the millions of small businesses in the US.

Shop at small businesses. In NYC, "Tekserve" is a great store that specializes in Apple products and services. Check your local area for small stores, or shop online, there are small businesses that are great and need our patronage. Is saving a few pennies on a package of pens worth selling out? Screw BestBuy, Walmart, Target and the rest.*

*Yes, I know Apple is one of the thousands of big businesses that build the majority, if not all, of their products in Taiwan, China and Japan. Hopefully we can change that as unions and wages for workers are rising overseas and companies are re-evaluating production. BMW builds many of their vehicles in the US, and with tax incentives (such as the incentive Apple received for building their server farm in NC) we can bring businesses back to the US. Stop patronage to the businesses that forced companies such as Rubbermaid to produce their products overseas costing thousands of American's their jobs, or helped stomp out "CircuitCity," "CompUSA," and other electronics stores. AT&T's acquisition of t-Mobile is one step further to less competition and more control over us, consumers. Vote with your dollars!

Very well said. The money needed to run this country isn't here anymore.

Then people should've been slow to acknowledge the original rumor, which Frankly seems less likely than the sky being a shade of hot pink on a normal sunny day.

Best Buy managers doing shady things to inflate their numbers is not what I would call unlikely.

MacNN says BB confirms story

iPad 2s are indeed being withheld by Best Buy, the retailer tells MacNN. "Best Buy continues to receive iPad 2 inventory from Apple on a regular basis," a statement issued by a PR manager explains. "As we've said previously, we are fulfilling customer reservations first. Our stores have been asked to temporarily hold non-reserved iPad 2 inventory for an upcoming promotion. This is a customary practice for us when there are supply constraints. Best Buy enjoys a great partnership with Apple, and we're delighted by customer response to iPad 2."

Now those were quality retailers.:rolleyes:

All retailers have their problems, but I was trying to say that it was a more comfortable marketplace when there was more than one big electronics retailer.

Not that I personally buy any electronics in a retail store these days, I guess.

Apple withdrawing the iPad2 from Best buy is. That was what the original rumor is. Obviously, Apple is comfortable with Best Buy's "shady" things if they choose to have their products sold there.

When I read this rumor, I laughed b/c I have personally had BestBuy lie to my face and say that they had no iPads then have me go the customer service department and be told that they did have iPads

And many others have posted that type of experience on this forum

So, it is actually happening

...unless they're choosing to not have their products sold there? Wouldn't be the first time Apple's snubbed a partner because they got annoyed by something.

But I apologize if I misunderstood the point you were making. I may have mistakingly associated it with what G5isAlive was saying, "all these notes screaming.. and its apparently old (wrong) news."

I don't think many people were screaming about Apple pulling out, but at Best Buy's practices, so I considered that the more relevant part of the rumour.
