Wouldn't it have made more sense to tell that to the person to whom I was responding, as they seem to think Thailand was a western colony?
I felt that you have a very limited understanding of "being colonized".

Perhaps my statement was a bit "Orwellian" but US sovereignty is debatable to say the least.

Oh I lived in both somewhat ruralish parts as well as in Bangkok for 3 months not long ago and, depending on price you pay for your services, aside from Taxi car, they were not that far off regarding depiction of how Thailand looks.
It's relevant to ones individual experience regardless of what Thai people think or feel.

Or... Apple accepted that their ad was attacking criticism, decided it wasn't worth fighting for, and gave up.
Plus, the internet is forever, anyone that wants to see it can see it without it having to come from Apple’s site, so taking it down is a quick way to say, “We’ve taken care of it” without really taking care of it :)

This is the problem.

It reminds me of people who brag about their partners being extremely "honest" about cheating. In reality this is just being honest about having zero respect for other people.

Well, considering that the USA actually was colonized by the west and Thailand, to the best of my knowledge, never was, your comparison was simply strange.

If you were simply trying to disparage the USA, then I'm not sure why you would have said "as sovereign". If anything you could have said "more", as Thailand actually has a king and by the traditional meaning of sovereign, they actually have a sovereign, don't they?

I have no stake in this, as I am from neither Thailand nor the USA, so feel free to elaborate your point.

Either way, my point was that I doubt Thailand would appreciate being referred to as a western colony any more than they did the Apple video of this discussion.

Yes, it is strange to see people that insult other people on the internet complain about others having zero respect for other people.

As I thought…
Yes, I doubt that I(or anybody else) can compete with Jerome Powell's "mantras".

Let's say both of us are non-English speakers and yet we communicate in English which essentially makes us both "colonized" as "hijacking the worldview" is always a higher level of colonization playing field.

Wow, you certainly minimized the more horrible aspects of actual colonization with that statement.

As horrible as they are they don't usually last: think of Japan who seemingly forgot that US nuked their civilian cities just for the sake of political games on a world stage.

A worldview on the other hand can have a very profound impact on future generations for centuries/millenniums.

Again, Japan is another bad example of hugely stretching the term colonization. This misuse of terms with a negative history simply waters down their actual history and true issues. (And you have now moved to insulting Japan who have certainly not forgotten. Why do you keep insulting others and showing zero respect for other people?)

If you want to say that the USA has a dangerously oversized influence on world "culture", I would fully agree with you and that there are many issues with that. But calling it colonization minimizes the term colonization and is like minimizing the word slave by saying you are a slave to the internet and someone is forcing you to communicate in English on an American website. Nobody is forcing you to do either of those things.

I said seemingly forgotten. I actually count on Japan to show where NATO bases truly belong(off the cliff).

Just listen to yourself. You are essentially defending your own slavery and therefore re-enforcing my point about profound nature of the "true colonization".

I agree that the example with the language is very rough/complicated and has a lot of nuances. For example the whole Singapore success story is based around English language providing necessary statesmanship competencies to build a successful country. So to ban English language in Singapore equals destroying a country.

There you go, again... "your own slavery". Throwing insults around.

Weird high road you seem to think you are on, but I guess you specialize in critique of others rather than self-critique.

Relax. There is a reason why people in general on some level "get it" that we are all on some sort of a treadmill.

I am comfortable if you see yourself as "an exemption to the rule" and can freely exercise a free will to jump off the internet/consumer bandwagon and what not other paradigm.

Just to give me a benchmark of your feelings on colonization, how do you describe the current situation in the Ukraine?

Ukraine has been an anti-Russian project for a thousand of years and therefore has a "higher status" than US which has been an anti-Russian project for 200 years or so. This explains why Ukraine does not need to have a Ukrainian lobby in US in order to get what it wants. Nobody will ask an opinion of the US citizens with regards to this matter.

Russian language in Ukraine has the same inherent importance as the English language in US or Singapore so any attacks on Russian language/speakers after the 2014 is essentially a destruction of the statesmanship competencies and the country as such. This is why the ultra right are always a perfect instrument as they are working against the best interests of their country and the beneficiaries are usually some entities like the Black Rock.

Thanks for your clarification of your views. It helps explain our differences of opinion.

Sorry, I forgot to respond to your treadmill comment. I have no illusions that I can freely jump off the modern bandwagon without some sense of withdrawal. That however makes it an addiction, it doesn't make me a slave. I expect that the distinction would be very important to anyone who was ever a slave and the conflating of the two terms would be insulting, but, as you said, language is complicated.

All the best to you, as I doubt there is any chance our views will align.

You can't expect not to hurt someone's feelings regardless if perceived hurt is real or imagined.
There will always be someone with hurt feelings.
