Sorry, Apple, got over 100 Audible books that you refuse to support organically on your HomePods.

If you DO support Audible on this device, I'll be there, otherwise I'll just stick with Echos and go elsewhere when my original HomePods fail on my Apple TVs.

Of course it is. It needs software and they are incapable of developing it.

Since they fired Forstall they went on a steep decline with their software.
It held up just because macOS was the base of it all and it was an exceptional operating systems. Over the years as they modified it and adapted it to new technologies they destroyed it bit by bit.

The current software management team is a disgrace.
Everything they touch becomes a bug. It’s pathetic.

I don’t know why Apple are really struggling with this product. Google and Amazon have had similar devices for years.

Can you quantify the nobody? Apple wouldn’t produce a product that has zero interest, that just doesn’t make sense.

Spot-on. It's as if people here have inside knowledge of what Apple customers would purchase.

And that Apple's massive success with 1+ Billion active and repeat customers making it one of the most successful consumer tech companies in the world are just winging it and getting lucky as a result.

The square screen mock-up in the photo looks ridiculous. Every other device has a rectangular screen which makes a lot more sense.

Is this really a new product idea?
(new to them, I guess)

I mean, this whole concept has sort of come and gone already and shown to be of fairly limited appeal.

Mobile phones were not a new product idea when Apple released iPhone. Nor were tablets, computers, watches, in-ear speakers, etc, etc.

Yet Apple prevails making it one of the most successful consumer tech companies in the world with 1+ Billion active and repeat customers who love to purchase Apple products.

Yes... there were a handful of flops. But those were conceived and released by Apple's previous CEO.

I just hope there is integration into services like Ring.. if not this is DOA. The market has been cornered with products like this for almost a decade. In my opinion Apple is really late to the party here.

Wouldn’t it be better a base where you can magnetically attach an iPad when you need a screen and a camera? And when you de-attach it it looks discrete and decorative like a HomePod.
They even have the new API so iPhones can control stabilizers to keep following a person and the Stage Center feature, so why not the same here for the FaceTime feature?

This way people could use it as an iPad charger/stand and choose the screen size depending on their needs (like a big one for the kitchen or a small one for the entrance)

Also you could be watching a video or a recipe while you cook and if the recipe needs like a 30min timer, you set it on the base and then take the iPad with you to the sofa to keep watching the video or the next steps in the recipe.

Honestly I expect this new device to be this modular, maybe not being an iPad but a touchscreen that receives signal from the base so it can stay slim and portable (like the Wii U Gamepad), because otherwise I don’t see its functionality
This is a great idea! Apple really need to look into making things more modular,?where an existing product can be used in a different way with a new product. That way, people buy more or buy newer models for their ecosystem. The idea of HomePod minis as surround speakers still baffles me how Apple hasn’t pursued this.

However, buying another device that looks like it could work the same as an existing device but with an add-on, won’t get many people excited

Everything seems rushed these days. Everything.

Apple used to only release devices when things were ready. It set them apart. Now they appear to rush things out as much as anyone.
if it was rushed it would be available now... LOL

isnt it up to Audible to write the app?

i'm guessing they could but refuse to pay the in app purchase fees...

nothing stopping them from letting you buy outside the app and log in. like many other apps... (well except Epic who are hell bent on breaking the agreement they signed up for...)

Yes, Atmos for the big speakers and adding a centre and rear minis would seem a natural fit for better surround. surely they could do it...

Duh! Why would they sell you everything good at once? Have to get the upgrades the following year…

I'm genuinely worried about Apple and whoever is leading their product development. Is apple trying to invent a ****** ipad strapped to a speaker without iOS?

I predict a flop, a-la Spotify Car Thing. Who would want a separate Apple gadget just to control their household appliances? Apple could have just improved on their Home software, so folks can control it from any Apple device they already own, an iPhone, an iPad or a Mac.
Elderly people might do better with a somewhat standalone product like this. Someone knocking at the door? Look at the doorbell camera output on the screen, tell delivery people to leave the package, etc., instead of having to find your phone or iPad, unlock it, make sure you're in the app (can be hard for people with memory issues). And it is plugged in all the time instead of using batteries that someone may forget to keep charged.
The article doesn't give an image credit, so there's no telling how close that image comes to what's really on the way. However, it gives me hope that the interface may have been designed for people with some mobility issues, with big buttons and decent spacing, and adjustable font sizes for people with more limited vision. Stuff you don't have screen space for on a phone, at least.
In other words, its reason for being is probably to be a more accessible way to use all these features. Just because you don't need it doesn't mean it's not worth them attempting to do. I'd want Apple to have fewer interface changes and a longer product lifecycle than their i*OS devices, too.

Tim Cook must go. It’s crazy how much Apple is falling off.

And I don’t want Apple to fall off, by the way. The tens of thousands of dollars I have invested in their echo system kind of means I need to be Team Apple. Which is why Tim Cook must go.

Not sure why they're choosing to join the market now when both Google's and Amazon's versions of smart displays are already showing signs of abandonment.
