Why are people surprised that Apple uses i in their names? They use it for almost everything.

Cloud is just the new buzzword for "internet".

The internet is a network. The cloud is a storage system that is available directly to a client or server. It's a distributed computing model...

The term "cloud" as it refers to the WAN is not the same cloud you are hearing about today.

Apple pays them that money, we pay Apple for that. I don't think just getting the name is worth the money.

You don't want to hear the word Drive in a name. That just brings the memory of local storage even though it's called "Cloud" Drive.

Personally iCloud is simple to the point name that everyone can remember and knowingly see the site being an Apple site.

Even though it's not a clever name Apple like to keep it simple and to the point.

Apple is about that simple minded look, name, and feel with the technical stuff behind the scenes.

Agree with this. People will call it that anyway. I can't tell you how many people I know who call either the retail Apple Stores or the iTunes Store "The iStore." If Apple had called the iPad something like "Slate" people would have just called it "the iSlate" or "the iTablet."

trollll time

"I have used apple products I do not think their design philosophy is particularly effective or attractive.......etc, etc, etc"....he writes (assume the poster is a he)..joined the site today, made two posts, both long, preachy, read like PR for the folks he shills for........tho i don't think he's preaching to the right market.

I believe it; all part of the iTunes cloud vision

We all know the 'cloud' is conceptually becoming the center for everything. Naturally, Apple will unveil a massive marketing campaign introducing iTunes in the cloud residing there (my prediction).

:apple:

Long live the king.

Hats off to Apple, they came up with a name almost as bad as Mobile Me. I did not think they had it in them.

Sorry buddy but I disagree.

Again.

Thank god you don't work for Apple.

I refer you to Ping

Kind of hope they don't use the name iCloud for the service...
I do. MobileMe and the me.com domain both come off as egotistical. If Apple had made me give up my mac.com domain on my addresses I would have changed to a new provider.

I'm getting ready for the day The Beatles come to the cloud, can't wait!
Careful, two of them have already gone to the heavens.

Now they can sue the weathermen when they use the word cloud since they own the rights to it.

Cloud computing in theory is magical - the future of personal storage and DRM software, movies, music for all...

In reality were still a long way from it, not becuase the technology to store all this info at a giant campus doesn't exist, we know it does. But it's a long way off because the vast majority of users around the world still do not have broadband infrastructure of the speeds required for a service to be as functional as local storage / software.

Cloud is just the buzz at the moment, but it's not somthing that is going to see major pay off for Apple for at least a decade whilst telecommunications networks around the world (bar this exceptions already) play catchup and offer users faster connections (more than the 2-3mb overall average globally).
