Oh, I agree, there were some great American cars, the more sleek models, and some TV classics like Night Rider, Starsky and Hutch etc etc.....

I'm thinking about the "let's put wings on it and chrome everything" brigade.

It's still happening today, there was a TV show a while back showing you the most expensive private homes in the world and a few were American, and in every one, it looked like the people who owned them (more money than taste) had just wondered into various high end shops, bought the most expensive stuff there was, and thrown it all into their homes.

Marble, Glass, Crystal, Gold plate, everywhere, cost massive amounts of money and looked terrible.

More = better seemed to be their motto which is a shame.

Very un-Apple if you wanted to put it in that context.

It's hard to describe, but things along these lines and way worse: http://media.business24-7.ae/images/2011/03/mansion.jpg

Mhhh i think that the A6 is a quad core processors, so there won't be a dual core.
The retina display is now considered from Apple a small upgrade because it's a 2 years old technology, even if we are talking about bigger screens.
Trust me, the name will be iPad 2S. This year iPad 2S and iPhone 5 and a partly-renewed Mac series.
I think many will still see the retina display as huge upgrade.

I also still have my doubt about the A6 proccessor. I want to believe it's gonna be a future proof quad core processor, but I'm having big doubts about whether or not it will be possible in early 2012 (remember, Intel processors have a completely different design and thus are not comparable).

That's why I, at the moment, rather believe that it's going to be a higher clocked dual core processor.

There's no profit in customization of hardware in a mobile device, and barely room in portables and desktops for configuration of options.

If wide choice is something you consider important, then you are probably closer to the demographics of Android users than iOS, and maybe even ideal for Windows Phone. Note that most Android OEM's aren't setting the world on fire with profits, so medium and long term support of your product might not be a possibility.
I am an Android user I use an HTC Flyer, I have android on my netbook, and I used to have An Archos 5 with android which was replaced by my HTC Flyer but that really isn't relevant. As for OEMS not making as much well yah but they still make INSANE profits it costs no more than 150 dollars to make a high end smartphone and the cost of developing of these products have gone down ever since smartphones became popular and yet these products still sell for 600+ dollars on average. I understand that things cost money develop but Smartphones are seriously overpriced (that is another rant for another day) :p. Hardware customization can make a lot of money often times OEMS can charge significant price differences for things like smaller/bigger screen, storage options, and accessories (like optional pens) is especially where OEMS make their money for example an N-trig pen sells for 20-60 dollars on average yet it probably only costs few dollars to manufacture. So going forward Apple should offer more options to get more people into buying into their "ecosystem".

But now with this form over function thing that Apple uses there is not room for a keyboard with a numeric keypad even on the 17" MacBook Pro, even though HP has managed to do that even on 15" models. This lack of function requires me to carry either a numeric keypad of generally a full sized keyboard. It seems like Apple has gone past the minimum. We need a little more where function has a little more say so in the form part rather than making the form being the only important part.

My relatives left Europe in the late 1800's. I am glad of that. I have no longing to go back. They left with good reason & stayed for an even better reason. Here we can have it the way we want. We can have it simple if we want, which I give no credit to Europe for. Usually not wanting to show off is more of a reason. Just follow the KISS way of doing things. I was always taught that KISS, keep it simple stupid, idea is best. In that way you could have more without consuming more.

It seems that Europe is great at getting the rest of the world to go to war & come back & die for them. I guess that it is easier for you to ask those that left for freedom of choice owes you in both lives & materials. Maybe we would have had a better life if we would have let Hitler have his way. The Soviet Union under Stalin still needed much war material to do do their part is winning the war in the East. Maybe we could have had a Soviet take over of Europe. Then you could be a little more socialist than you are now. Then you could have a few less freedoms than you now have. Many people gave their live for the freedom of Europe in the 1930's & 1940's. But without the lives of many from the US would that effort have gone in vain?

Simple style was not patented or thought of by the Europeans. I'm sure that this is the normal way for things to be designed worldwide. So do not claim that simple is a European design first. Just read your Bible or other book that includes early history & find out where simple was fitst used.

I tried to ignore most of your american rantings. As for the bolded out, you're somewhat mistaken. Just like Arts, Design history is fairly well documented. Ideas and ideals can be traced over time, and so can their nature. While Design just like the Arts are dialectic movements, moving in cycles, and different dependent on context (e.g. eastern vs. western philosophy), to make a long story short, modern western design ideals can to a large degree be traced back to late 1800 and early 1900 with the turn from romanticism to rationalism. In this stream of design its hard not to mention institutes such as the Bauhaus, and its influence on modern design is quite hard to ignore. Similarly, its hard to ignore the ways in which this functionalist, rational, approach to design differed from what came before it. And safe to say, "simple" has not been the dominant norm in western design over the past few centuries any more than expressionist art have.

That said, (once more,) Art tends to move in cycles, and we've certainly seen similar ideas before in architecture, design and arts. Its just that these streams do not seem to have had the same influence on modern day philosophies that the rationalist movement have had.

I like the first one, but I hate the second one... and they are practically the same!

I love the second one, and like the first one. Getting blue and orange to play together is tricky, and you need to know what you're doing to get it right. That said, if i were to pick one for driving on a daily basis, it would still be the first :- )

Think i remember you ranting about that before ;- )
(But yeah, i agree. Rarely do these people seem to have much class. Sad, really... then again, people with class are probably not as likely to open up their homes to trash-TV).

Nouveau riche... pfff ;)

Higher clock speeds generally means two things: a) higher power consumption b) more heat. More than likely, that is the key reason why were seeing this multi-core trend in mobile way below the "real cutoff"* despite the fact that dual cores at say 1ghz generally are far worse performance wise than a single core at 2ghz. That said, at 1 Ghz theres certainly room for improvement.

The instant my bank allows me to design my bank card, this will be it.

So when someone steals your wallet, and sees that on it, they can blame it on the card...because the card said to take it. :) haha.

What you write is complete rubbish. First the difference that more than 99% of all the people who care about Steve Jobs are absolutely free to state their opinion of him, whatever it is (company employees are usually not allowed to say things that reflect negative on their company), while 99% of all the people who care about Kim Jong Il would be in deep trouble if they criticized him. Second, Steve Jobs actually made Apple a very successful and rich company, while Kim Jong Il was responsible for millions of people starving. Third, your opinion that "Steve Jobs is being deified" is complete and utter crap.

You are entitled to your opinion. All I have said is that both men have died and both men had fans/followers who have attempted to deify them. It matters not what the differences were between the two men when they were alive. Looking at your argument, it would suggest that your god deserves to be worshipped whereas the other does not. I care not about the theology of the followers. Just that both men are being treated similarly by their respective followers. In other words, methinks thou dost protest too much!

FocusTaiwan reports (via 9to5Mac) that Apple pushing its manufacturing partners to meet deadlines that would allow the company to launch the iPad on Steve Jobs' birthday, February 24th.According to the report, workers at several iPad component suppliers as well as manufacturing partner Foxconn will have limited time off during the usual Lunar New Year holiday. The Lunar New Year holiday itself falls on January 23rd next year, with workers generally receiving a number of other days off from work around that date.

Sources have been reporting a variety of rumored dates for an iPad 3 introduction, with some claiming a debut in the March-April timeframe while others have pointed to a February launch being in the works.

Apple last year launched new MacBook Pro models on Jobs' birthday, although that unusual Thursday introduction was likely a convenient coincidence driven by the debut taking place during the Presidents Day holiday week.

by the time this ipad 3 comes out tablets will be selling for 200 bucks with everything from bt to 5 plus mp cameras

We used to see Steve with exciting news around this time of year, now it's just Mac rumors lol

Oh well, I guess I picked the right site to keep my hopes up

Huh

Apple was never a company to rush stuff out. And I'm sure they have something else up their sleeve to tribute sj.

13" MacBook Pro i5(2011), 21.5 iMac i3(2010),11" MacBook Air 128GB i5(2011), iPad 2, iPhone 4S,

This my guess for the third-generation iPad:

Release date: February-April 2012
Announcement: about two weeks before release
Display: LED-backlit with 2048*1536 resolution (LCD IPS)
Name: iPad 3
Processor: A6 processor (one of the two: 1) Dual Core but higher clocked and more RAM 2) Quad Core and more RAM)
Cameras: front: 2 megapixel, FaceTime HD - back: 3-5 megapixel without flash
iOS: iOS 5.1
Siri: not sure, but for now I think "no" (Apple has never included Voice Control with their iPads).
Battery: 9-11 hours

My guess; an apple A6 will be one of these:

1. A process shrunk Cortex A9, dual 1.5 Ghz
2. A cortex A15, dual core, running at 1.5 Ghz.

Since they'll be going with an IGZO display, that means power consumption for the display will be somewhat reduced. In addition, a process shrunk A9 or an A15 fabricated at a smaller process would allow the processors to run faster (I'm guessing 1.5 ghz.), or have more internal RAM (1 gigabyte) , or both.

I'd like to see a SD slot and stereo speakers.

rumors on this website are getting worse and worse

even more laughable than the iPhone 5 in October...

iPad 3 for SJ's birthday, seriously guys...

is this April 1st or what ????

I guess its pointless for me to buy one now. Heck, I'll settle for a iPad 1 when the iPad 3 is released.

Sure iPAD 3 earlier would be great but seriously... this has got to be the stupidness rumor so far. For so many reasons this is an unrealistic time table. An iPad3 might be introduced in Feb., but no way will it be for mass sales until the very very earliest April or May.
"one more thing"

ipad 3 on steve's b/day would be great

go, tim and team!

:)

Looking forward to getting an iPad 3, 17" Macbook Pro and an Apple Thunderbolt Display 27" next year.

Bring it on iPad 3. My wallet is ready!

Please apple.

Make a 17-inch ipad.

Magazines and newspapers would be fantastic on this.

Video would be mind blowing.

Games would be mind blowing.

Sales would be mind blowing too, and not in a good way. Seriously, who's gonna buy a 17" tablet? It would be big, heavy, not portable, hardly be able to fit on a desk in any convenient manner, not to mention expensive.

I would. But I don't think there's a lot of me around.

I'l like a tablet to be a good 15"

Just think for a moment, how GIANT an iPad seems to a young child. A large and wonderful device, their hands are small compared to the device itself.

Now think of me, a 6ft 5" male, with large hands that dwarf the device.

My one hand it the same size as the whole iPad screen.

This is just 'easy defending'. Now you are basically saying it's alright to kill tens of thousands of lives just because others also do it.

Also, its not like America haven't supported their fair share of dictators and the likes through out the years. Harsh reality is that they (and many with them) supported pretty much anyone who a) sided with them and not soviet/communism, and/or b) had something they wanted (e.g. Oil). One do not even need to look beyond the Americas to see this very clear pattern.

Understandable, for sure. But it pokes quite large holes into the "America is so nice"-nonsense.

Disclaimer: probably could've been more clear on that America is not that different from say France, UK etc. in this respect. The most notable difference in the post-colonial era is that they are more powerful and have more vested interests than most. Other than that, most leaders are guilty of lining the pockets of murdering dictators around the world, as long as they got what they wanted in the end; Saddam, Pinochet, Gaddafi, the Shah of Iran, the Muhajedin, who cares. If they were useful "to the cause", they were supported one way or the other.

Not completely true. It wouldn't be much heavier than the iPad, maybe a quarter of a pound at the very most, and could fit on a desk just as easily as a laptop.

Though the one point of the iPad is the fact that it's lightweight, portable way to watch movies, read books, and scope out the internet. It's an information device, first and foremost. A 15"+ device would probably be a little too unwieldy for its intended purpose.

Until the hardware becomes beefy enough to support drafting and design software, I can't think of any advantages an iPad that large would offer over the current size.

Nice story, except that England is NOT Europe. Next time try some real european country ;)

Yeah. I know. But it all happened during my European trip, and colored the experience enough that everytime I think about it, I vaguely recall chewing on something that tasted like pig entrails and cured leather (I think it was pot roast). :p

And I should know what pig entrails taste like. I had chitlins once. It was almost as bad.

I would like a slightly bigger iPad. I spend most of my time working with something about the size of a notebook (a paper notebook, not the computer) in my hands to take and read notes. A (computer) notebook doesn't really fulfill this role - you cannot compare casually opening a paper notebook and writing down a few notes using a pen to opening a computer notebook, turning it on, starting a software, and writing some notes using a text processor.

An iPad, in other hand, would be good for something like that. Not for writing a novel, but then again that's not what people walk around with paper notebooks for anyway. As far as reproducing "digital paper", the simpler and more limited design of the iPad is considerably better than a computer notebook. The iPad is, however, smaller than a paper notebook; if it were a bit larger (as in, very slightly smaller than a common, paper notebook), it would be better to write in and to read, without suffering of a way too big increase in weight.
