Then again, is it possible to do on the new macbook pro's without voiding the warranty? Can someone please answer?
Apple gives you instructions on their support site for how to do it. Yes: absolutely, replacing RAM and hard drives will not void your warranty.

I have the last MBP with a replaceable battery (…which I've never once swapped out), and replacing a hard drive is ridiculously easy on that. For the current ones, you have to take out 10 screws to get at the RAM or HD, which is a bit more of a pain in the ass, but, you know, how often are you going to do it?

You do realize that when you add 4x2 GB and pay $400 for it, you're still paying a little bit over the cost of those DIMMS… and Apple gets to keep the 2x2GB that would have come standard?

Basically, you're paying Apple over $200 to install it for you, and that's still kind of high.

Not really.

If you're buying a new Mac, you get the 2 x 4 GB for $400. Since you're already paying shipping, there's no added shipping cost.

Now, someone quoted a Newegg price and I have good experience with them, so let's use them. They're at $190 each or $380. However, you have to pay shipping, so it's $390-400 - a wash.

If you do it yourself, you'll probably get about $35 each - or $70 (less ebay fees). So it costs you about $70 more to have Apple do it. That's a pretty reasonable price for a lot of people given the inconvenience and the expense if they make a mistake. AND, it's probably the lowest the premium has ever been.

RAM and hard drives are user replaceable parts.

on an imac only the ram is user replaceable.

not exactly.

there are 4 slots in the 27 inch imac. 2 of which have a 2 stick in them. if you want to add 4 with no intention in the near future you have 2 more sticks added. if you want 8 with the opening to add 8 more they credit back the 2 2 sticks and put in 2 4 sticks and leave 2 empty slots for the other 8

8GB is working just fine on the i7 iMac, you'll have to do better than that, Apple.

Your talking about the MacBook Pro right? As it is $400 to get 8GB therefore as a beginning video editor who will also run virtual machines. getting 8GB is essential.
It is $400 from Apple or OWC which it is $375.00 but Apple won't cover the Ram if something goes wrong. Then, I also have to Ebay them to break even so would I be saving money?:confused:

I stuck 8GB more in my 4GB 27" and running 12GB at a significant savings over that still.

Though good to see them lowering prices.

I've never purchased RAM from Apple. I usually order with the minimum configurable RAM, then remove it and replace it with larger 3rd party memory modules. I still come out ahead.

Maybe I'll finally be able to buy RAM from Apple!

UK prices:

Memory

* 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
* 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x2GB [+ £163.00]
* 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB [+ £491.00]
* 16GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x4GB [+ £1,145.00]

Surely I am wrong in thinking that it is 3rd option down that has been reduced to $400 in the US - with UK customers asked to pay £491 for the same RAM?

Well I got 8 gigs with mine (4x2gigs) and I wont get 16 until it's in the 500$ range.

1000$ is still better than 1400 through, still too much for a 4gigs chip compared to the 2gigs.

Looks like it... wow Apple are really screwing their UK customers with their prices.

When I bought my iMac the genius told me to go to 'crucial' for Ram.
That is good customer service.

Just checked:

8GB Kit (4GBx2)
Part #: CT1115258 • DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.5V • 512Meg x 64 • • £390.09 inc. VAT*

200=250?

I must be missing something obvious due to lack of sleep. 2 x 4GB = $400 which means $200 per 4GB stick. 4 x 4GB = $1000 which means $250 for the same stick? Why is it not $800?

it's because people can replace it on their own. I'd still recommend replacing it yourself to anyone just to get comfortable with working on your own computer.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't void your warranty. And RAM prices are stupid high for every manufacturer. Adding more RAM in a build-to-order machine is pretty much a stupid tax.

Yes it's another low blow to us (well me).

I have been one of the hopeless posters on the now infamous 'iPad UK news' thread on here which yesterday exceeded its 2500th post.

It's frustrating that we seem to be just brushed aside by Apple at times.

If you assume the value of the default config is worth $200, it makes sense:

2 x 4GB = 2 x 300 - 200 = 600 - 200 = 400
4 x 4GB = 4 x 300 - 200 = 1200 - 200 = 1000

Now 2 x 2GB isn't really worth 200 and there's also the BTO overhead cost, but you get the idea.

Why should you? I ordered a memory upgrade for my new 27" iMac yesterday on Amazon.de for half the price that Apple charges now. And it were Kingston memory modules. I could have saved even more by ordering compatible noname memories.

Apple are still ripping off their customers, and still people applaud them for that price drop. Just another reminder that The Holy Church Of Apple Inc just can't do wrong in some people's eyes.

Doesn't replacing RAM in a new iMac involve removing the screen with suction cups? Not for the faint of heart. I'm surprised Apple lowered the price as they have you over a barrel if RAM installation is so hard.

there's a little door on the bottom of the iMac to change the RAM just like on the older models

I'm not complaining: I'm perfectly happy adding my own RAM and eBaying any extra DIMMs I might end up with. (…On a Mac Pro, not an iMac.) It's just that people seem to overlook that part of it so often.

you're paying for the warranty as well. if you put brand X RAM and something weird happens like spontaneous reboots for no reason then Apple will tell you to put their Apple certified RAM back in to see if it fixes the problem
