I've been downloading the iTunes "Single of the Week" since December of 2004, after I got a free download with the purchase of the GameCube game "The Urbz" (Think urban spin-off of the Sims with Black Eyed Peas cameos.) Because of that free download, I was introduced to the wonderful world of iTunes and used it for almost a year before I even had an Apple device to play music on. I started downloading the weekly songs and eagerly went back each week, only missing a dozen or so times (that's 10 years worth of music!) Because of those free songs, I've discovered and fallen in love with so many wonderful songs over the years by tons of artists that I never would have come across without that exposure. Because of my positive experience with these free songs all these years later, iTunes is my main music player on my computer and the reason why I'm even considering purchasing a new iPod, especially in an age where people don't buy music, let alone devices whose only function is to play music, when people have their phones that they can easily load their music onto. If Apple is truly done with their iTunes "Single of the Week", I can honestly say I am grateful for all the music I've enjoyed because of them and will continue to enjoy for years to come, but hopefully they'll realize what a special thing they've given up on. :apple:

I never once took advantage of Apple iTunes 'Free Single of the Week' offer. Perhaps it's because the music that they were offering up was all drab and dull mainstream junk? Regardless, it doesn't appear that too many others were interested much either. :(

Apple has seemingly ended its weekly iTunes "Single of the Week" promotion that gave out a free music single download each week on the iTunes storefront. As noted by Business Insider, a member of the Apple discussion forums claims an Apple support employee informed him the company decided to drop the weekly promotion.

The "Single of the Week" promotion began in 2004, and in a similar vein to Apple's "App of the Week" promotion on the App Store, it gave out free singles every week from artists and bands of varying genres and popularity. Though forum user Bob Foss' confirmation of the promotion's end remains unverified, Apple also recently decided to end its annual "12 Days of Christmas" iTunes Store giveaway.

Volunteers in our forums have tracked the free iTunes Store content in several countries for a number of years, but the 2015 music thread remains empty as evidence of Apple's apparent decision to cancel the promotions.

The only time I ever shopped in the iTunes store was when I had a gift card and could check out the Single of the Week. I LOVE free and discounted stuff. Now, I only shop in the Google Play store because they're always have several promotions, discounts, and a hood amount of free stuff. I literally have downloaded at least five popular albums from there and a few movies...FOR FREE!!! I'm more likely to buy more stuff or something at full price if I have an initutive to shop there. Also, the other day, i wanted to buy an album (its a new fairly popular album) and it was $9.99 on iTunes, but I picked it up for $7.99 ob Google Play.
