How nice of Apple... here's $5 while we take you for 19-27% on that balance on the card (The real reason for the "fundraising" promo).
Hum - as it had to be made using Apple Pay, most people probably would have also set it to use their Apple Card’s which would have had a 0% interest for 12-24 months.

That’s how I made my purchase from Apple. All my large purchases, doesn’t matter who are always financed with 0% and I generally pay them off in 6 months or less. Those CC companies don’t get a cent of interest from me.

If you think that’s fun in any kind of way you know absolutely nothing. It’s a typical MacRumors comment as snarky & mean spirited meaningless nonsense. AIDS sure as hell exists now, but it doesn’t need to. We have all the tools we need to put an end to this miserable, horrific pandemic. But the political will to make this go away just isn’t there these days. This flippant attitude of “it’s not my problem” is what keeps it going. Your comment being a perfect example. Thanks for your cruel inference, not! 🤬

Word salad virtue signaling moral high ground grandstanding nonsense.

I just reused OP's template to state the obvious. Calm down...

Corporations do not engage in tax evasion, which is illegal. Whatever the backstory above, I’m sure it’s a lot more nuanced than your take of tax evasion.
Corporations engage in many, many practices to try and bend the law and pay as little taxes as they can. And they do illegal things because they have enough power to defy nations.
In this case, they decided not to pay some of their taxes in Italy for more than a billion for years because they knew that, if Italy accused them, it is very common for large tax evaders to settle for less than they have evaded and that's what happened.
They sold stuff in Italy. They pretended the transaction happened with their Irish (the EU tax haven) branch by billing it as such and calling everything that happened in Italy (resellers and workers) just consultants. It was very, very clear that it was just a trick and that they should have billed them as italian transactions as all competitors did.

Tax evasion always has "nuance" as you call it. It's never "they asked me to pay $13B and I just paid $30". It's usually telling "half truths" and calling things with clearly wrong names. Italian law was very clear and those transactions happened on Italian territory. There was zero ambiguity.

Counting for what they saved and interest, they got a great deal. In corporate terms (=only money matters) they've done the right thing. In legal and ethical terms, all people responsible for this should rot in jail.
I'm proud to pay taxes (lots of taxes) in here because if you're sick, the healthcare system literally doesn't even ask you for a document before saving your life. And this is why I hate those who try not to pay taxes for profit. People are literally dying because of their greed. And I hate that they try to pretend they're good people and so many fools believe them.

Not sure what fairy tale book told you corporations don't evade taxes. Google what happened, I'm surely not the best at describing it but it's pretty well documented.

It’s true. These companies have enough resources to legally challenge governments who create bad laws and try to screw with American companies.

Apple used legal loopholes the same as most people who minimize their tax burden via tax avoidance.

Yep this was all legallly setup with everyone knowing the tax structure.

There have been many, many posts on this matter alone and doesn’t need to be rehashed.

Different strokes for different folks. I pay less taxes but have a top tier health plan. Who is the “they”. People are dying because they can’t get healthcare because of apples’ greed. That is just spin.

This has been rehashed so many times I don’t know who told you this is tax evasion when everything was setup legally.

Anyway appreciate the civil discourse.

Well said.

The people who defend Tim Cook’s corporate greed sympathize with billionaires over poor people. They think the so-called “rights” of billionaires is more important than the fundamental human right of healthcare for all.

The Cook supporters sound like Ayn Rand. They think poor people are less human than billionaires. That’s why they support American-style capitalism, which in reality is socialism for corporations.

They constantly criticize socialism, but in reality, this is what they support: Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor.

What? This is just more spin. Has nothing to do with Tim Cook. Posters now believe that companies should not try to pay as little taxes as possible, the same as private citizens. And “billionaires” the last we all looked have the same rights as non-billionaires.

People who support apples corporate philanthropic efforts understand apple’s corporate mission is not to save the world. That apple has given voluntarily through the years is built into their ethos. The detractors don’t understand this.
They constantly criticize socialism, but in reality, this is what they support: Socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor.
Just some more spin. I’m glad apple does what it does and the people who don’t like apple for whatever the reason, do not have to become a customer of the company.

No they don't. They openly lie, that's the point. Minimising taxes and telling lies to avoid paying taxes are two pretty different things. If you're asked "how many iPhones did you sell in Italy for the last 10 years" and you say "zero, we sold them all in Ireland with Italian consultants" so you don't pay those taxes until forced, you're lying. There's no other way to see it.
And the taxes they're not paying... other people (way poorer people like me) are paying them and they're thieves to me. Worse than thieves, since they steal much more than any burglar ever could. And, again, they're rich people stealing from the poor with absolutely no need to steal to survive, which makes it even worse.
Who is the “they”. People are dying because they can’t get healthcare because of apples’ greed. That is just spin.
To me "they" is "all people who need it". I think being alive shouldn't be a privilege, especially now that the economy is tough. But, even if that wasn't the case, "they" is all people who are so debilitated by sickness they can't work and afford private healthcare and our free healthcare system can't handle. I don't know about you but I want them alive and corporations don't.
I would be pointing at this if Apple wasn't also pretending to be good. Charity in this case is a complete marketing scam.

Apple has lied and committed tax evasion for years. There's absolutely no doubt about it. Then, from a legal standpoint, they never got sentenced because, when accused (years and years later, after making tons of money) they settled. But I can still very legally call them tax evaders. By the way, again, they haven't stopped after that first accusation. They stole money from my community for decades now.

No they don't. They openly lie, that's the point.
No they don’t lie any more than you and I. Governments lie as well, tbh.
Minimising taxes and telling lies to avoid paying taxes are two pretty different things.
No minimizing taxes is a thing that all companies try to do. There were no lies told by apple.
If you're asked "how many iPhones did you sell in Italy for the last 10 years" and you say "zero, we sold them all in Ireland with Italian consultants" so you don't pay those taxes until forced, you're lying.
No that was the business arrangement that was inked and now you accusing them of lying.
There's no other way to see it.
There’s no other way to you to maybe see it. Others have a different viewpoint.
And the taxes they're not paying... other people (way poorer people like me) are paying them and they're thieves to me.
Okay they are thieves. That doesn’t mean initially what they set up wasn’t legal.
Worse than thieves, since they steal much more than any burglar ever could. And, again, they're rich people stealing from the poor with absolutely no need to steal to survive, which makes it even worse.
Listen you can say what you want it doesn’t mean any of it is factual. Other than there was a fight about the situation after the fact.

Well if you believe apple has committed tax evasion you’re welcome to do so. I believe they followed the law that was setup for this purpose. The connection between people dying and apple committing tax avoidance is ridiculous.

Anyway Apple gets to do what it wants and you and I and others can debate about it until the cows come home.

It’s a very real connection. Ordinary people’s taxes are used to pay corporate welfare, as well to pay for tax cuts for corporations. So those ordinary’s people’s taxes could’ve instead been spent to fund universal healthcare.

Corporate CEOs like Tim Cook try to fool people by contributing relative peanuts to charities, not out of genuine concern for human well-being, but rather as a deceptive tactic to distract from corporate tax evasion (which in America has been legalized via massive corporate tax cuts).

America is a truly socially toxic country where so many people criticize the poor for wanting their own tax dollars to pay for services that help them. And those same people that criticize the poor celebrate billionaires who receive gigantic handouts of other peoples’s tax money, like that welfare queen Elon Musk.

Never had the possibility to deduct almost anything from taxes in my life except medical bills, because of my kinds of contracts. Never lied to the government about anything, even if I'm not a fan of many things they do. I have the right to ask for foreigners who make money here to give the government what they owe, like I do.

This conversation is over. They said they were selling stuff in Ireland while selling it in Italy. There's an infinity of records. Zero doubt about it. You are denying the fabric of reality and I don't think it makes sense to talk to you. I don't know how to debate this anymore because 2+2 is 5 to you.
Bye bye.

Thanks for the civil discourse. Obviously there is a lot of emotional collateral when dealing with these topics and everybody has their point of view. Happy New Year.

It's not a real connection. Its as if someone said if government stopped the pork billions could be spent saving lives and feeding people. It's a false equivalency.

Whatever the opinion, they try to do something more than the average person. People who as dishing on them, it's my opinion it's do as I say and not as I do. And jail time is to be had for tax evasion. Tax avoidance not so much.

False equivalency. One can either move out of the USA or change the system. As long as money is the medium of exchange here there will be a discrepancy between the bottom and the top. Good for those who made it to the top. They did not push the others to the bottom. And good for apple over several years for the charitable donations.

I'm delighted to see someone gets it here (in bold, my emphasis).

I also don't even think it's possible to be a major corporate CEO and keep any idealism or values truly intact. The machine grinds you into the shape that's needed to keep number going up at all costs.
