It's a pity Indonesia dont ban the millions in aid each year the Australian government give them...If Indonesia banned every foreign product they don’t get a subsidy for, I’m guessing the country would be in a pickle.
Spot on!Knowing Indonesian politics, I would bet a penny to a pound any ‘investment’ will largely line the pockets of the existing elite.
$100 million investment? Lmao. Go do “business” somewhere else.Shouldn't have paid them a penny. Indonesia would probably soon change its tone if Apple completely pulled out of the country.
Trump said on Joe Rogan how Tim Cook paid him a visit to ask for some way to not pay taxes. He gave them a 1 year waiver to manufacture somewhere else than China, that’s why they diversified to other countriesApple’s not pulling out of Indonesia that easy. Too much to leave in the table. They’re 3/4 the size of the US.
They are not giving away anything, they are investing. 1b investment to build plants, hire labor, etc.So these countries are now charging a price for accessing their cheap labor force. Maybe the goal of returning manufacturing to the U.S. might not be the pipe dream it has always been in the past. Maybe the cost of manufacturing will increase enough to make it plausible. In either event, the price of goods and services will rise. What? You think companies like Apple will not pass this $1B offer on to their customers?

A lot of Taiwan company had set up factories in this country for more than 20 years (ushered by the government guided by a overall strategy running away from China) with little award and mostly quitted.I mean it’s not like Apple will give away that money. They’ll probably get Foxconn to set up a factory there.
And when companies require subsidies in the billions to build factories in your country is it also blackmail or just business? This feels like blackmail to me.
it's not investing... it's a shakedown pure and simple. They are not giving away anything, they are investing. 1b investment to build plants, hire labor, etc.

People in this country have their leisure life style and are not a fit for 9 to 5 assembly line.
"If you don't invest a billion dollars into our country then you can't sell your product" is much, much, much closer to blackmail than "We charge you 15% for use of our property and systems to sell your app."How is it blackmail or bribery? That's kind of like calling Apple's 15% to 30% App Store commission blackmail or bribery. It's not and neither is this.

It still is blackmail. And by the way developers could use alternative stores to sell their apps, if they wish (available on EU since march 2024), but everyone want to use App Store because it is the best way to sell apps.No. How is it blackmail? What deep dark secrets or damaging information does Indonesia have on Apple that makes it blackmail? Indonesia is requiring a payment (investment) in order to do business in their country just as Apple requires payments (up to 15% to 30% commission) in order to do business in Apple's "country" (iOS).
ignorant commentit's not investing... it's a shakedown pure and simple.
"pay up and be protected or else"
you were autocorrected from "accurate comment"...ignorant comment
how about "extortion" then? No. How is it blackmail? What deep dark secrets or damaging information does Indonesia have on Apple that makes it blackmail? Apple must be going "i wish we could build all these products by robots" then could do it anywhere 24 hours a day without unions or worker rights groups interfering."That’s not the point is it? If efficiency is the only consideration, Apple manufacturing should stay in China. There’s no way Indonesian or American workers will be making anything for Apple.
I am happy for indonesia that it managed to force Apple to contribute to its economy. What they’ve done is no different to trumps tariff which is the price of access into the American market.
I also feel Apple has a huge blind spot when it comes to markets outside of the U.S. China and eu. Apple doesn’t even have a physical store in India until recently. It still doesn’t have any in indonesia.
Ok - a shakedown then. Indonesia is requiring a billion dollars to open its market. Indonesia doesn't do anything to support the iPhone. Apple's commission is compensation for developing the OS, maintaining it, payment processing, hosting the apps, dealing with customers etc. A lot of work goes into that commission.No. How is it blackmail? The fact that you don't see a difference between taxes and licenses and "give us a billion dollars or else" is shocking. I suspect if a certain once and future President of the US said something similar for a foreign company to do business in the United States there would be worldwide outrage. If it's a shakedown then so are tariffs, taxes, license or permit fees and other things which businesses may be required to pay in order to do business in particular states, countries, etc.
However, as I stated, it’s not blackmail. That was my point.
