Because it uses the same components as android phones which you can buy for $100.

It's amusing how people here actually think its a good thing that apple is making huge profits. That means people who are buying iphones are getting ripped off.

Of course it's a good thing that Apple is making huge profits. The company runs healthy, and the consumer gets great and innovated products.
If you really believe the Android is cheap and most appropriate for you, just go buy an Android phone then.
As for the iphone, when you buy one, you are not getting ripped off: you pay a premium for the most advanced interface (which is patented and I.P. of Apple) as well as the best hardware. When you buy a DVD do you feel you are getting ripped off? The dvd only costs some cents and you pay like $20 to get one. When you d/l an album from itunes, you are getting ripped off? A digital album, full of 0s and 1s costs $0 but sells for $10. So, do you feel like getting ripped off?

Fortunately there are manufacturers out there that offer cheap alternatives (Nokia) just not Apple.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8C148)

And this, folks, is the *real* story, never mind frenzied channel-stuffing by the also-rans.

Since when is price set proportional to cost?? On what planet? Price is determined by utility, perceived value by consumers, and demand.

It can cost me 50 cents to make something. But I can then turn around and charge *what the market will bear.* iPhones are a tremendous value to consumers and they're buying in record numbers. The product is in high demand. That's all.

shareholders only really win if Apple gave dividides which they do not.
Most people who buy AALP have zero power. The people who have enough votes to lock things down are in the hands very few people.

It fake view that shareholders really are winning jack. Clearly Apple does not share that insane profits with its share holders.

I'm sorry RP, but you have no idea what you are talking about. Currently, my AAPL stock is up 2,919.72% over what I paid for it. I sure feel like a loser without a dividend.

Seems he understands finance like he understands Apple.

Anyhow, Apple's profit justifies their mobile strategy completely, particularly in terms of the market share argument.

It's shocking to see the plummeting revenue of Nokia over the past 3 years. But I have to say I have no sympathy for that company as I was desiring to upgrade an outdated phone every single year that I owned a Nokia phone. They just eeked out new features a tiny bit at a time. This will happen to Apple too if they don't make some large leaps forward now that competition is growing. Why are we still looking at the same Iphone desktop years later? We need big leaps! Not a couple new features every generation.
