But he's right. 10 Million phones a year = 1% market share (in 2006). It's likely that it's less than 1% in 2008.

Apple's not in the mobile phone business. They're in the smart phone business. Comparing the two is silly.

It's also likely that sales will double in 2009. Ballmer is always right - right up that grand river called de'NILE.

Well blame that on Steve-o - he's the one that made the comment...

Steve Jobs said they hoped to capture 1% of the market for mobile phones in 2008. He was right.

Other Steve guffawed and exclaimed loudly that Apple would never get significant market share in an interview where he made direct comparisons with his companies Windows Mobile smart phone platform. He was wrong.

well I never really concern myself with what Other Steve says. I was just saying that SJ made it a goal to get a 1% market share of all mobile phones.

Edit: Actually Apple isn't by definition in the Smart Phone business since they've expanded what "smart phone" means to include "regular" phones at this point. If Apple was only after SmartPhones we'd see a HUGE decline in RIM sales but we haven't. I don't know if they keep these stats but I'm sure a large % of iPhone buyers had never bought a "smart phone" prior to the iPhone.

Not by my math. The calendar year 2008 starts with the second fiscal quarter. By now, there have only been 3 fiscal quarters counted in 2008. Q2, Q3, and Q4. Q1 2009 would be the last 3 months of this year.

So by calendar year:
Q2: 1,703,000
Q3: 717,000
Q4: 6,892,000

That's 9,312,000. They still have to sell 688,000 by the end of the CALENDAR year.

No, a fiscal year starts at the outset of Q1 and ends at the close of Q4, a calendar year starts January 1 and ends December 31, for most of us anyway.

Didn't you hear? Ballmer claimed that WindowsMobile, as well as the Zune, have already captured 30-40% marketshare. Incredible how delusionally deceptive he is.

Not sure what you're after but he's right. Apple's fiscal Q's are offset from calendar Q's by 1 so Q2 2008, Q3 2008, Q4 2008 and Q1 2009 are all part of CY2008.

I'm just glad that it has been cleared up once and for all that Jobs meant 10 million IN 2008, not 10M by the end of 2008. All the people who kept insisting otherwise got REALLY annoying.

Pretty good but Nokia sells well over 10M smartphones a quarter.

So if Apple can sell 6.8 million in one quarter, after only being in the phone business for slightly over a year, it sure looks like they have a good shot at being number one in smartphones before long.

But he's right. 10 Million phones a year = 1% market share (in 2006). It's likely that it's less than 1% in 2008.

True, but since Apple is going to go way beyond 10 million this year (14 million or more, conservatively?), they should still make the 1% easily.

What are the latest estimates for total phone sales in 2008?

I'm happy for Apple with this news, but that does not change the fact that they are also pissing off their base with their other products (or lack of).
Yeah, pissing them off so much that sales of Macs, iPods and iPhones are each at all-time highs.

*mindless drivel*

Er, no.

They are pissing-off a tiny minority of a tiny minority of their user base. The part that always complains, no matter what.

Not after anything just pointing out the target was 10 million in 2008, not in 's fiscal year and certainly not in 3 quarters from one fiscal year and another quarter from the next fiscal year (which is also 11 months in one calendar year and 1 month in another). Fiscal years can run from any date in the year, calendar years always start on Jan 1.

9 Million plus Feb-Sep, a few more in the preceding January and some more again in what we've had in October and there we have it 10 Million, and of course 2 months to come.

Q2 2007: 0
Q3 2007: 270 thousand
Q4 2007: 1.119 million
Q1 2008: 2.315 million
Q2 2008: 1.703 million
Q3 2008: 717 thousand
Q4 2008: 6.892 million
Q1 2009: at least 688 thousand in three weeks so far.

You did all the leg work but left out the answer. Like a joke with no punch line.

.27+1.119+2.315+1.703+.717+6.892+.688 = (thanks to spotlight's built in calculator) ...

13.704 million iPhones.

Coming decision by Steve Jobs. "We have decided to go with a dark, smoked glass on all iPhones and iPod Touch--it just looks so much cooler."

Lately, the decisions have been that ridiculous.

It does seem like all the lessons they're learning with the iPhone aren't quite translating over to the Mac.

+1

I had a go on a friends iPhone. Nice and all, but yeah, not really for me. I think it is great Apple has been able to break into this, but couldn't agree more - what about the computers?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Exactly what do you want?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I'm keen to know!

Please elaborate.I haven't a clue what you are referring to.

10 millionth customer!

I just got my iPhone yesterday. I guess that makes me the 10 millionth customer!

iPhone

iPhone 3G is the best phone I have ever had. Clear graphics, its great! AT&T beats Sprint by a lot! It is worth every penny, even the pennies you spend getting out of your current contracts!

I'm gonna have to come to his defense here - he clearly was just adding up Jan - September and didn't hear the part from the broadcast with SJ saying they've since sold more than the 600k+ to cover up to the 10 million mark. Since Apple didn't officially release results for the past 3 weeks other for jobs mentioning they've sold enough to make it to 10 million he's right in his official Apple filings yielding less than 10 million units.

But yes, as SJ said, since we're into the 3 weeks of October they've sold enough to make it to 10M.

They totally should have had a sweepstakes or something. The 10 millionth person to register their iPhone via connecting it to iTunes (which considering how many got hacked in Rev 1 probably hasn't happened yet) could win some free iTunes or something. Do they even do that kind of stuff anymore? I remember they used to do it for iTunes downloads but I don't recall anything for the last major milestone...
