But he's right. 10 Million phones a year = 1% market share (in 2006). It's likely that it's less than 1% in 2008.
Apple's not in the mobile phone business. They're in the smart phone business. Comparing the two is silly.

Well blame that on Steve-o - he's the one that made the comment...
Steve Jobs said they hoped to capture 1% of the market for mobile phones in 2008. He was right.
Other Steve guffawed and exclaimed loudly that Apple would never get significant market share in an interview where he made direct comparisons with his companies Windows Mobile smart phone platform. He was wrong.
Not by my math. The calendar year 2008 starts with the second fiscal quarter. By now, there have only been 3 fiscal quarters counted in 2008. Q2, Q3, and Q4. Q1 2009 would be the last 3 months of this year.
So by calendar year:
Q2: 1,703,000
Q3: 717,000
Q4: 6,892,000
That's 9,312,000. They still have to sell 688,000 by the end of the CALENDAR year.

No, a fiscal year starts at the outset of Q1 and ends at the close of Q4, a calendar year starts January 1 and ends December 31, or most of us anyway.
Pretty good but Nokia sells well over 10M smartphones a quarter.

Yeah, pissing them off so much that sales of Macs, iPods and iPhones are each at all-time highs.I'm happy for Apple with this news, but that does not change the fact that they are also pissing off their base with their other products (or lack of).
*mindless drivel*

alright apple! now how many have they sold so far exactly?
Not sure what you're after but he's right. Apple's fiscal Q's are offset from calendar Q's by 1 so Q2 2008, Q3 2008, Q4 2008 and Q1 2009 are all part of CY2008.
Q2 2007: 0
Q3 2007: 270 thousand
Q4 2007: 1.119 million
Q1 2008: 2.315 million
Q2 2008: 1.703 million
Q3 2008: 717 thousand
Q4 2008: 6.892 million
Q1 2009: at least 688 thousand in three weeks so far.
Coming decision by Steve Jobs. "We have decided to go with a dark, smoked glass on all iPhones and iPod Touch--it just looks so much cooler."
Lately, the decisions have been that ridiculous.

+1
I had a go on a friends iPhone. Nice and all, but yeah, not really for me. I think it is great Apple has been able to break into this, but couldn't agree more - what about the computers?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Not after anything just pointing out the target was 10 million in 2008, not in 's fiscal year and certainly not in 3 quarters from one fiscal year and another quarter from the next fiscal year (which is also 11 months in one calendar year and 1 month in another). Fiscal years can run from any date in the year, calendar years always start on Jan 1.
9 Million plus Feb-Sep, a few more in the preceding January and some more again in what we've had in October and there we have it 10 Million, and of course 2 months to come.
I just got my iPhone yesterday. I guess that makes me the 10 millionth customer!
