Working 60-80% of the time sounds better than I'd expected - some of the Chicken Littles running around made it seem like it was all still vaporware.
I mean, honestly, that's about how often Siri works for me now. No shade. I actually like using Siri, but 80% is right around my hit rate.

If they can get into the 90s, I'll be pretty happy.

Once again, who made the decision to run that iPhone 16 ad featuring Siri features that weren’t close to being ready to ship? It’s one thing to talk about it in a keynote that mostly techies are watching. Completely something else to run a commercial during NFL football touting features that aren’t publicly available.

If they believe that Siri is the world‘s greatest personal assistant, that’s part of the problem. Apple has not shipped good software in years.

It doesn’t sound like this is ever going to ship, let’s be honest. And that’s probably for the best because it will never work. The only part of Apple Intelligence that’s actually useful is the part that is outsourced to open AI.
Exactly. One could always argue about these types of claims, but Apple once wouldn't have said this if it didn't have at least good arguments that this was the case. Now, Siri is pretty obviously a *terrible* personal assistant (compared to, say, Alexa or Google), which makes this contention simply laughable.

Everyone's reaction is completely blown out of proportion, LOL -- this is the end of the company? Like come on, so many of these takes are not serious. Especially when people have been ragging on Siri for years and rag on AI now. You either care about this or you don't, so why are you upset and thinking it can never be done just because they need more time? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills with some of these dramatic outlandish and absurd reactions.

This sounds like an authorized leak and is the correct way to respond to Daring Fireball. Apple should not hold a press conference or publish an apology. Few outside of the enthusiast community even know about this kerfuffle. Also, the media is too fragmented nowadays to create an Antennagate or Mapsgate. Apple will eventually invite people to see some demos to generate positive news about Apple Intelligence and Siri.

So instead of a slap on the wrist they pad themselves on the back. Classic Apple move. How about apologizing to your loyal customer base?

With all the failures of late I’m slowly but gradually losing my respect for Apple.

They will be obliterated by their competitors. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Lmao.

This may be the first intentional leak I've seen soliciting sympathy.

As for the 60-80% accuracy for new features, I would love that with the features they shipped back with the original Siri like "Call Mary" which does not work 60-80% of the time.

Here's one from recently on my Apple Watch:

Just one example, but there's random stuff like that that doesn't make sense all the time.

The most annoying for the last year or so is when I do "Call John" on my iPhone and for whatever reason it thinks I am saying my own name (let's say that's David) and it thinks I say "Call David" and it then proceeds to tell me it has no phone number for David—and yet my contact card certainly has my number.

They aren't delivering now what they were supposed to have delivered even pre-Siri with Voice Control back in 2009.

They're not delivering now what IVR phone systems delivered in terms of accuracy back in the 1990s.

Greater than 50% of the time I will invoke Siri in my car and ask for directions and Siri will respond to getting directions to that place and nothing happens after that. Maps never starts. I never get directions. It’s a complete joke. Apple wants premium prices for this crappy software?

As expected, this is absolutely not due to overworked engineers that are under extreme stress and I’m almost 100% sure when they saw the announcement about the Siri on the iPhone 16 launched, they were shocked and knew what was coming. This thing is purely management incompatence to manupulate the market and potential buyers.

If they are saying its working 60% - 80% of the time in an all hands meeting, it means its 30% - 40% ready at best.

I really feel sorry for the engineers in that team, its one of the last teams I wanted to be in. I know exactly how it feels because I’ve been there, working in a supercar manufacturing company that overpromissed and collosally underdelivered.

Lot of armchair CEO’s in here. Remember, yes, it sucks that they are in the state they are in but there are many engineers that did and do great work. This message was to their employees. They aren’t going to destroy them like you all want. As many have pointed out, this appears to be a managerial issue right? Why tear down the engineers.

I’m slightly optimistic that now that it’s been a stain for them, they kick everything into high gear. The AI race is still in its infancy and while there’s no denying they are behind, Apple has a track record and the deepest pockets out of them all. I wouldn’t bet against them to close this gap.

Lots of pitchforks in here, some rightfully deserved, I don’t disagree. But marcumors forums members are not the general population - if you asked the general population and all of apples customers, how many even care?

The sky is not falling, friends. It’s just a little cloud passing over in the grand scheme of things in apples outlook.

“Apple reassures Siri team members…” lol what a joke! Shouldn’t it be the other way around where the exec in charge of this group has an all hands on deck meeting to find out what exactly they have been up to? These team members should be apologizing to Apple for dropping the ball and letting Siri become the laughingstock of the assistant/AI space. Pathetic.

I know Im not alone when I say: I upgraded tot he 16pro *because of apple intelligence features*, and my 13pro wouldn't support them. The 13pro was perfect in every way, even sporting a surprisingly strong battery 3 years in, mint condition exterior, and unimpeachable cameras. Is the 16pro better in every way? I think the answer is yes. Is it $1400 better? No.

This is the kind of dynamic that lands companies in class action lawsuits. Hyping features that never come and using it to sell products that don't actually have them is fraud. Like, its sad that Apple cant make Siri even basically useful, but there's a deeper crisis here that might arise.

he praised the hard work of employees and the "incredibly impressive" features they developed, saying that Apple would continue to work to "ship the world's greatest virtual assistant" to Apple users. "I saw so many people giving everything they had in order to make this happen and to make incredible progress together," he said.
Steve Jobs would have never. He would have lit a fire under them months ago.

So this just confirms this is a managerial issue and not an engineering issue. This Walker guy needs to get promptly fired.

If he were a competent director or manager, he would have a game plan to address concerns on the press and concerns from customers instead of "reassuring" the team that what they're doing is working - because it is not.
I don’t know how bad things are internally at Siri or if this guy is responsible for the disconnect between Apple’s PR and the vapor state of the product. But… this a bit reminiscent of the “screeching minority” CSAM memo penned by Sebastien Marineau in response to world + dog telling Apple that mass surveillance is mass surveillance no matter how much lipstick you put on it.
