Apple began selling refurbished second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro models last month, just a few days after adding refurbished 10.5-inch iPad Pro models. This was brought to our attention today by Reddit user Chaseism, and we decided to share the news since it went unnoticed at the time.

Apple has steadily added various Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular configurations with 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB of storage since mid January, with prices reduced by around 15 percent compared to what Apple charges for brand new models. All three colors are available, including Space Gray, Silver, and Gold.

In the United States, for example, there are Wi-Fi models with 64GB of storage available for $679, a discount of $120. Wi-Fi models with 256GB and 512GB of storage are also in stock for $809 and $979, down from $949 and $1,149, respectively. Various other configurations are available, including in Canada.

Apple says its refurbished products are thoroughly inspected, tested, cleaned, and repackaged with a new white box and all manuals and accessories. Apple also installs a new battery and replaces the outer shell, making it nearly impossible to distinguish between a refurbished and brand new iPad Pro.

All refurbished iPad Pro models come with Apple's standard one-year warranty effective on the date the tablet is delivered. The warranty can be extended to up to two years from the original purchase date with AppleCare+ for iPad, at a cost of $99 in the United States and Canada for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

All in all, these deals provide customers with an opportunity to save between $120 and $170 off the second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, originally released in June 2017. Keep in mind better deals are often available from resellers, so keep an eye on our Apple Deals roundup for the latest sales.

Apple also began selling refurbished iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models in the United States for the first time yesterday.

I highly recommend anyone that was about to buy a new Apple product to check to see if it is in their refurbished store.

I have purchased many Apple refurbished products, and they all have been problem free.

Other than the box that they come in, you would never know that they were refurbished. Inside the box, the refurbished devices have all the protective plastics that new ones have.

I agree. I have a refurbished 2016 MacBook Pro. I couldn't tell it wasn't brand new out of the box.

That's a decent recommendation. I'd go a step further and suggest people check for refurbs but before buying, check Microcenter. Depending on the model, they sell new cheaper than Apple refurb. Even if you have no Microcenter, BestBuy tends to price match Microcenter. The same iPad refurb Apple sells for $679, MC sells brand new for $649. For those who need the flashy packaging, it's hard to better. For those who want to save a few more bucks, ditto.

Are the protective plastics new, or are they also refurbished?

This is awesome I need to pick up 4 for my business and I don't want to use their leasing program right now.

Hoping they do a 20" (or larger) iPad Pro that's desk-sized and plugs in; would be an artist's dream!

I highly recommend NOT buying refurbs. With a little patience, it is pretty easy to buy brand new units when the go on sale. I have been able to buy my Macbook Air, 12.9 iPad Pro, and iPad Mini 4... all brand new at Best buy for LESS than Apple sells refurbs. They regularly go on sale.

I wouldn't want to buy a refurb iPad with a battery of unknown health. Even with a 1 year warranty, unless the battery is way off the mark, Apple won't consider less than expected battery life to be an in-warranty replacement.

If you can find it for cheaper, than yeah, get the cheaper one.

This is why I would never buy a used device from a third party.
Good point.

I usually don't buy any refurbished and expect it to be like new, with Apple being the exception.

Apple clearly states their standards for an item to be sold as Apple refurbished, and I trust them to deliver a device that is indistinguishable from a new one.

Outside of Apple, I have no idea what refurbished means and what I will end up getting. Refurbished to someone on eBay might just mean that they wiped the outside down with a damp cloth.

I am not saying I would not buy others' refurbished products, I just wouldn't expect them to be like new.

Main issue is warranty.

Apple store refurbished are 1 year warranty.

Best Buy refurbish the user assumes the warranty of the product. (Or 90 days per Best Buy policy). So if original iPad Pro 2nd generation was activated last June 2017 when it came out. You are dealing with 4 months of warranty left buying from Best Buy.

You seem to have misread my quote. From my quote: "Depending on the model, they sell new cheaper than Apple refurb." The pricing I am mentioning is for brand new, not refurb. There is no warranty issue.

This is probably true. Apple refurbished devices are very good, but the savings isn't always beneficial pending what someone is purchasing. Target for example is a store that discounts substantially with discontinued Apple products that are new and may not cost much more than Apples refurbished Products.

My experiences with Apples replacement devices, they receive a new casing, indeed a a new battery and display. That's always how it's been for my refurbished devices, and they have been excellent.

why not just buy second hand off ebay, craigslist, or even amazon sellers? much cheaper and just as good. i never buy new or refurb from apple, always used on one of those sites and NEVER have i been shafted. always done well and come out ahead. just bought this same second gen model with a dent on the side with official apple kb and cover for $565 in 256gb. this is basically half price. all is in great condition except a small dent on the metal.

Beware of Best Buy's warranty and return policy. They don't honor it.
