I got about 8 Vaios for my prior employer. They kept 'em until they were totally outdated and finally donated most of them. I bought two from them.

Their laptops take a pounding. They get dropped, fried, abused.

The Vaios never had good battery life - in fact it was awful - but normal for the time, I'd say (it was a few years back). But otherwise these machines were *GREAT* for hardware reliability -- to make 'em work right, of course, you also had to remove all the crap Sony and Microsoft stuck on the hard drives. But they lasted far longer than our IBMs, Toshibas, Dells, etc.

Now I think they're using Dell...

sounds reasonably good. my friend has a sony p4m 2ghz laptop. it's decent hardware wise and has a nice wedge design but he's really messed it up software wise. he browses the web through realplayer!! wtf?! anyway, i really like a lot of sony's new desktop designs, except for that tv thing. they show off it's profile on their website like it's a good thing. the damn thing's at least 6 or 8 inches thick!
could this also mean xbrite screens in apple's lineup? that'd certainly be nice, and they do have a wuxga laptop screen.
edit: sorry if any of my ideas have already been posted. i havent read through the whole thread yet

...I should mention that my epxerience with Vaios ended at about 600 MHz...!

Sony does have some of the most innovate design in Intel-based laptops, but, I find it hard to believe that Apple needs help in this area. How different can it actually be? Apple engineers should be well acquainted with heat-maintenance in laptops. And I thought this Intel thing was already 5 years old inside Apple HQ? I'd have guessed they already had the hardware designed by now and are just putting the finishing touches on it for production next year.

But, if true, it's not a bad idea for Apple to get people from a company that has a good history of putting out innovative hardware for the PC world.

I sure hope that apple does not use any sony designs. I recommend against their laptops and desktops. They look nice but are plagued by design problems like non standard parts in their desktops - if power supply breaks throw out the whole machine because there are no replacement parts (happened to friend). I work in a large university and have had to work on a few of the sony laptops and every one had broken hinges. Before using an IBM laptop myself I hated them (the look) but now I know they are what you want if you want a real none apple laptop. They are built like tanks.

Hilarious. Like you can run to Frys and buy a power supply for a G5?

My rev C 17" is corroding, has had a new screen and 2 drives. Assesments of quality based on personal experience are worthless. Their descriptions of luck.

The only people who can rate quaility overall are people who've done real studies. Not people 'who've owned a lot of notebooks'. Why do you think the medical field uses a double-blind placebo controlled standard? Without it a visit to the doctor would mean amputation or echinachea.

Well I think the main reason is simply the name. What sounds better?

Hey Bob I got a new PowerBook with a Centrino dual core chip inside.

Hey Bob I got a new PowerBook with a Pentium M Dual core chip inside.

Centrino sounds like an Apple word. Just sort of rollllllllls off the tip of the tongue. Apple Centrino PowerBooks. If it wasn't for the whole...not being what it really is I'd prob call it a Centrino too.
*Homer Simpson voice* Mmmmm non existant particle goodness

CENTRINO and their cool logo that goes with it look very apple and it certainly beats the pentium 3 or 4 logos :)...though i did like the blue man group

Hmm. Asus is making some prettier notebooks these days. The v6v is an inch thin 15" that weight below 6 lbs. and appears to be made out of a dark anodized aluminum. Look at the second link below for a better view of that. Perhaps I'm not seeing it correctly? So there are some pc designers out there striving to avoid the brick system in addition to Sony.

oh well i remember the article about built quality and service quality in the german c't and guess who came out first ? IBM, Apple, Acer ... in that order.. and who was last ? Medion, Sony, Gericom
and lets face it those two others aren't known for "top quality" in fact i would say any brand except those 3

sony products are fine design/spec wise (though little overpriced) but their pc hardware quality isn't the same like their walkman,VCR or classical TV quality ... the ultra thin ones look nice though

Although this doesn't seem true to me, it may be. Did anyone see the last WWDC? Sony and Apple have really been teaming up and also I think the new Macs will support blue-ray. We will see in due time...

I still think the Motorola chips were the best....my G3 366 MHz iBook runs smooth with the upgraded RAM on 10.3.9 and I use the shadow killer so it is really smooth.

they got the raw meterial, they got the human resources, do you think they will release the first intel powerbook in january?

Apple + Sony = Think Different

What makes the developing relationship between Apple and Sony so significant is their seemingly unified vision, as far as the role of personal computing devices is concerned. Sony and Apple realized a while ago, the future is in entertainment and the user's experience with that medium. If we take a step back, we will notice that an "Alliance" with Sony is only natural yet revolutionary at the same time... as Sony happens to own the rights to much of the media (music and film) Apple will need access too. Whoever has control of and access to the licensing rights, consumer driven media is predicated upon, will have long term viability... let's hope it lasts and the egos don't self destruct!

Intel processors, a Sony "alliance", and Apple... and gates says Apple is NOT a viable force in the longrun... sounds to me someone's worried.

Oh by the way, it looks like OSX "Tiger" might be runnable on the PlayStation 3! :D

Asus and Acer are my favorite notebook makers followed closely by Fujitsu, Clevo/Sager.
