Has anyone done the recycling program where Apple will take an old computer back when you buy a new one?

I bought a MBP from a brick-and-mortar Apple store. The employee said that I had to sign up for the recycling online, even though Apple's website says that the store Specialist will give me a chance to "opt-in" to the program during the purchase process at the store.

I haven't opened my computer box yet, because I didn't get an automatic rebate that I was expecting with the iWork I bought at the same time. I expect I will need to go back to the store to sort that out.

But I'm wondering whether the recycling opt-in occurs during product registration or not. So if anyone has done that or seen it during a new computer purchase registration, I would like to know.

This is the Apple website link I was reading:

Thanks.
