Keep your old device and NEVER trade it in with Apple.

Sell it. - Donate it (it’s worth more in a tax write-off than any cash or credit you receive). Repurpose it.
Apple’s trade in values usually aren’t great but yesterday they were offering $170/$140 trade in values for iPhone 11 and Apple Watch S7 45mm respectively, which is comparable to what you would get on Swappa.

Is Swappa still the most recommended venue for selling phones, laptops, watches etc.? Seems like it has been for a while, but I haven’t successfully used it yet. If there are better ways I’d love to hear folks’ success stories. I appreciate the option here on MR for the marketplace but have not had much interest when trying to use that either.

I don’t like Swappa at all. Their support is toothless because PayPal has ultimate say over a buyer/seller dispute. There are plenty of horror stories online where the buyer completely screws over the seller.

Apple products are relatively easy to sell, so local sales are my first move. I list them on Facebook Marketplace. I also use Reddit and try to sell to people with reputation, which means they have confirmed transactions for that subreddit and/or active Reddit accounts with high karma.

Looks like I will be keeping my Apple Watch SE 2nd gen for as long as it works since its almost worthless now lol (Not that it was worth much more a week ago but just saying).

I normally am a fan of selling used electronics and computer parts, but sometimes it's more trouble than it's worth. If it's an old iPad or phone I can give it family as an upgrade for their own devices. But when I upgraded my watch from an SE to SE2, I just traded it in with Apple. The last thing I want to do is worry about scammers on ebay and packing/shipping such a fragile device (didnt have original box).

Just recently I was listing a few items on eBay and almost immediately as soon as I posted said listing, I got offers from users from Delaware from a zip code and/or address associated with freight forwarders and scammers. I gave up after the 2nd offer after already canceling a purchase to an address typically associated with scammers/freight forwarders. How difficult is it to say, that you're only selling to real people with real addresses located within the continental US? The frustrating part was that I priced those items super low with the intention of just getting rid of them quickly, I feel like that put me on the target sights of the worst of eBay

You'd think it would be in eBays best interest to cultivate a platform based on trust.
Wow same here , EBay has been difficult to find legit buyers . And when you do the eBay charge is even a turn off … will just keep my old devices ..

Trade in’s with Apple are the worst value. Sell it privately or donate it to a good cause if the device still has life left in it.

Tim doesn't have little kids working in factories, he just outsourced it.

I still don’t understand how Apple can claim so many green credentials when all of its manufacturing and most other related services are outsourced. Do they truly know the environmentals of the entire production chains? I suspect not

Totally agree, good points. Would like to know, how do you know a zip code, address, or even region or state like Delaware is “associated with freight forwarders and scammers?”

A naive, idealistic part of me still likes eBay for its theoretical purpose of used or like-new items available from people who are semi-short distances from me, vs. premium MSRP prices at big-company stores and web sites. But it’s not a good company from what I can tell and the degree to which they‘ve let aggressive, usually but not always non-US entities dominate the platform and the search results is terrible.

Also, it’s kind of sad / funny how none of my friends and family even want* a used (or new) Apple watch… their typical response being, they can’t believe how often I have to charge it. 🤗

I can always google the city/zip code/address. If they end up buying the item, I can check the address. There's some common addresses associated with freight forwarders or scammers that other sellers have posted about in the past. Additionally when someone makes an offer, I can check their profile and if it doesn't say City, State and just says United States or some other country that might be a sign that they are a scammer or international buyer. Not saying that they are necessarily scammers if they use a freight forwarding service, but I'm just trying to take a risk based approach. Ebay isn't my day job, just an avenue to get rid of stuff I don't need and last thing I want to do is deal with a scammer trying to scam me for a used Apple Watch. Or some international buyer who uses a freight forwarder and its delayed or there's an issue and have to deal with that headache.

AT&T gave me almost 3X Apple's trade in value for my XR when I got a 15 Pro a couple of months back.

You can't compare the two. The AT&T figure in an inflated trade-in value tied to a long-term plan commitment. The actual (not inflated) AT&T trade-in value for an iPhone XR is $45 (64GB) to $50 (256GB) which is less than half of Apple's iPhone XR trade-in value of $110.

T-Mobile gave me a good value on trade-in for my iPhone 11 Pro Max, I’ll probably do that again this fall to get a 16 pro max:rolleyes:
I’m still using my iPhone 8 Plus 256 for secondary programs like social media, I won’t run that on my primary phone and still have an iPhone 6 tooling along for buying and selling things on OfferUp and marketplace.
Still have an iPhone 4s tooling along, using it as a bedside alarm clock.

Man, I couldn’t have timed that any better.

Yeah there’s no right answer for all scenarios. If you have a family plan of 3+ lines, the big three postpaid carriers make a lot of sense on a per line cost basis. I upgraded my entire family to 15 Pro’s last fall. I bought 3x Samsung Galaxy S20 FE’s for about $120 each and traded them in for a $830 bill credit via ATT. I sold their old 14 Pro’s privately.
