I've noticed that the apple refurbished store currently has the air 3 on sale for £409.

Would you go for this or a new iPad 9?

Is it worth a slightly older chip and £105 more in order to get a laminated screen in your opinion?

I would definitely go for the Ipad 9th Gen, its better than the Air 3 in terms of performance with its newer A13 chip and has Centre stage. As a bonus we got a slight price drop in the UK on apple products, so its now dropped in price by £10 to £319 which is really good value.

I have to say I'm surprised that price and power are winning over screen. The way everyone seems to talk about laminated Vs non laminated I thought that would tip the scales with this comparison..

I’m on the fence too, have an iPad Air 3 which I can sell but deciding if the 9th gen is worth it.

Is there an issue with your Air 3? The iPad 9th gen is more sidegrade than upgrade.

If buying new, it's an easy recommendation over the Air 3 due to the white spot issue on the 10.5" models plus the 9th gen is cheaper, I believe. If you have a perfectly working Air 3 though, I don't see much point in replacing it with 9th gen.

More of centre stage! but then i felt its more of a gimmick now and I couldnt give up the laminated display..

Well the 9th gen also got the p3 wide colour support with True Tone. Closing the gap more on screen quality. The A13 also got a decent performance jump on the gpu side as well.

Also from my own personal experience, the air 3 also suffers from the white dot issue that the 10.5 pros have

I have 3 of them and 2 out of the three suffer from this

The screen is horrible on the base iPad, I would definitely get an Air 3 over one.

BTW, I see no performance difference between my Air 3 and iPhone SE 2020. The A13 was a minor update over the A12.

What's horrible about it?

Incorrect, 9th gen has sRGB not P3 Wide Color Gamut

Also to OP 9th gen has better value with the front camera and A13 as well as price
