i think that apple needs to become there own wireless carrier via the reseller route. they would have control of device prices and have better control over plan prices. Plus i would be proud to say that i am on Apple Wireless or iWireless, What ever they would call it. I really like to support apple anyway i can. :)

Even if they resell other network access there still lies the problem of partnership. I really doubt that Apple would go this route - far too complex of a situation that still can't appease everyone without it being operated at a loss and dependent on others for infrastructure. Plus it would only be good for the US, it still wouldn't eliminate the problems of dealing with other carrers around the globe.

Not to mention that there might be a perceived conflict of interest being that Apple would control both data and hardware. Are they going to allow other phones? they would have to if they didn't want the whole operation being a money hole.

Telecommunications is a very complex business operation, its crippling to depend on other companies or obscenely expensive to not be.

You may think they need to but they won't. They would have done that with the iPhone intro at Macworld. Even with the tablet they are rumored to be going with Verizon.

Apple is pushing away developers and consumers. They have shown that they are not paying attention to either. They are siding with the carrier which will make them lose in the long run no matter how good a product the iPhone is. The funny thing is that they have the nerve to warn jailbreakers. Also funny is that this is part of the reason Mac developers (then consumers) left in the late 80s-90s. Apple is repeating this garbage all over again. If you can't get the apps you want or believe is necessary, the platform is meaningless.

From Steven Frank at Panic Software:

"People love to chalk up posts like this to “whiny iPhone developers”. Well, I’m not an iPhone developer. I don’t write iPhone software precisely because the app store process is so stacked against us. When I first complained about it, I got a lot of comments: “Well, if you don’t like the app store, don’t develop for it.” So, I don’t."

"I’ve reached a point where I can no longer just sit back and watch this. The iPhone ecosystem is toxic, and I can’t participate any more until it is fixed. As people have told me so many times: It’s Apple’s ballgame, and Apple gets to make the rules, and if I don’t like it, I can leave. So, I don’t like it, and I’m leaving."

"Switching to a Palm Pre for voice and light data usage. I looked at the Pre and the G1. The Pre is (very) slightly better at what I need. They are both lousy in comparison to the iPhone. And Sprint’s coverage sucks in my neighborhood. I’m going to completely hate using it. I am voluntarily going to make my own life a bit worse because I believe in certain principles. But I’m going to love not supporting a rotten app store. (Palm’s app store is still in a beta lock-down — they haven’t had a chance to screw it up yet. If they do, it’ll be time for Plan C."

Mike Arrington from TechCrunch:

"So I have to choose between the iPhone and Google Voice. It’s not an easy decision. Except, it sort of is. Google isn’t forcing the decision on me, Apple and AT&T are. So I choose to work with the company that isn’t forcing me to do things their way. And in this case, that’s Google.

So what phone will I use next? Well, that decision is easy, too. I’d move to the Palm Pre because I believe it is the best phone out there other than the iPhone 3GS. But Google hasn’t created an app for the Palm Pre yet, just Android and Blackberry phones. So for now I’m going to use the new Android myTouch 3G along with the Google Voice App. As soon as something better comes out, or Google makes an app for the Pre, I’ll switch. And keep the same phone number. No long term contracts for me."

Wow, FCC investigates Apple/AT&T for anti-competitive practices and asks for reasons on GV rejection.

Can't say I don't feel a bit vindicated. Me and the people posting in this thread pointing out that something seems not right (legally) with some Apps Store policies.

I really don't care who's fault it is Apple or AT&Ts. I also don't think there's anything necessarily illegal on what Apple did as well. HOWEVER, I'm incredibly disappointed in Apple - on ALL fronts - regarding the App Store.

I have absolutely no confidence on any of the apps on my iPhone anymore. Why? Let's look at Apple's "reason for pulling Google Voice apps"

Duplicating features.

WTF? Really? Then what about those HUNDREDS of calculator apps? How about all of those WEATHER apps? How about all of those "remote control" apps? Don't they duplicate apps/functions on the iPhone?

How about this: the new iDisk app for the iPhone (great app btw). However, I'm not a big iDisk user. I'm a DropBox user. I also use Air Sharing. Don't they "duplicate" as well? What's to stop Apple from just one day pulling those apps?

Let's take this a step further. What if Apple releases an iChat app for the iPhone? Would my BeeJive IM app be at risk?

This is why the pulling of the Google Voice app is troubling. Do I think it's illegal? No. Do I think that Apple "doesn't have the right?" Heck no, it's their app store. However, is this good for consumers, for the long-term viability of the iPhone, better apps? NO NO NO.

So, all of you Extreme Apple Fanboys (tm) defending (and some even applauding Apple here), take off your blinders, step away from the kool-aid, and realize that NONE of your apps are safe anymore.

If I were a developer, I'd never develop for the iPhone.

Hey Applefanboys, what if Microsoft or Apple made it so you couldnt install Firefox, Opera, or another browser in Windows or OSX. Do you think that would be "ok". I didnt think so. This is the same for the iPhone (the OS) and the App Store (the place to buy applications for your OS).

Apple, shame on you.

@w00master

Well said. They are definitively drinking the kool-aid! :) (it was actually Flavor Aid, just found out the other day)

No sir, you don't quite get it.

The iphone is a cell phone. They have a contract with ATT. ATT subsidizes the phone. They have a right to protect that. You signed a contract with ATT.

Your argument is laughable as it has no merit at all.....not to mention the iphone USES ATT's network

So Dukebound and other "Apple/AT&T can do whatever they please" apologists.. What say you now?? Obviously FCC thought there is something VERY fishy going on with the whole Apple/AT&T cabal, and their arbitrary censorship and blatant stifling of competition.

Keep apologizing for Apple's abhorent behavior.. Like I said, give it a couple of years - Apple is going to find themselves in Microsoft shoes, fighting against DOJ/FCC and other governments in court. Yesterday's FCC inquiry is just a first step on that road.

Google Challenges Apple's Authority By Moving Google Voice App Online

"Apple rejected Google Voice almost two weeks ago, removing it from the app store. Now under investigation by the feds, AT&T has pointed the finger at Apple for the rejection. Now in an exciting move Google is moving its rejected application online in an effort to essentially negate any attempts by Apple to police the application.

The new app can be installed as an icon on your homescreen. The specially crafted iPhone-shaped webpage will offer all the features of the original app. In other words, in a move akin to flipping the bird to Steve Jobs, Google has essentially highlighted a way for app developers everywhere to easily publish their rejected content.

There are some important caveats. First, Google's app was intended to be free in the first place. Apps like "MeSoHoly", which Apple rejected as offensive were intended to come at a minimal charge. Donations could work, but Apple's simple revenue sharing would be missed by developers forsaking the app store. Second, its not as trivial to build the app online, and there's still things that can't be done within the iPhone's version of Safari.

On the other hand the move could usher in a new era of freedom for iPhone users. Freed from Apple's dictates of what apps are fit and proper, the phone's true potential could finally be achieved. Rejected apps like eBook readers (rejected in mass over piracy concerns) could simply move online. As the New York Times' Dave Pogue puts it, "What's Apple going to do now? Start blocking access to individual Web sites?"

Is Google Voice Really Duplicate Functionality?

I don't think so. My understanding is it lets you give everyone a single phone number which then calls all your numbers at once or in different combinations. Is that the same? Or am I thinking of something else? I can't keep up with all these new communication ideas.

Way to dig up an old thread...

That is all it does, it could "replace the phone dialer" according to Apple and this would "confuse the customer"

can somebody please send me a google voice invite... i wud really appreciate that..
