I just want the AppleTV to appear as a device in iTunes on my iMac for a whole week.

Currently, I start up iTunes and the AppleTV doesn't appear. I then reboot the Time Capsule and then the AppleTV appears. Two days later it disappears again and I have to reboot the Time Capsule again.

Vert annoying.

I had these issues using a TimeCapsule also. Switched to using the small AirportN (size of deck of cards) and never had problems again. No need to reboot router for 6+ months now whereas with the TC it was weekly. Try the small Apple router just to see if it solves the issue. I think they are $99.

Well, at least I'm not going totally mad!

I'd setup UpNP on my xbox running xbmc in the living room and got my ATV to pick it up so I could stream media from it to the xbmc install on my patched ATV.

I come home from having all four wisdom teeth extracted expecting to be able to lie back and relax, then the box told me about an update and updated itself. I hoped it'd just need repatching with the same patchstick I'd used on 3.0.1 and thankfully that's the case. Just needs a new Launcher item added, and I found the 3.2.2 version here. This allowed me to download and install xbmc, and we're back and running :)

SoftwareMenu frapplicance won't work but then that is meant to be an easy fix too but I've no applicat it yet

Huh?

So let me get this straight. You have a device from Apple that costs $200 or more, and it won't work right. Your solution is to go out and give Apple another $100 to fix it? Pray tell me why you wouldn't be in Apple's face until your problem is fixed. Here's a hint: I have a 2TB Time Capsule, and two Apple TVs. Both ATVs are running wirelessly off of my Mac Mini server, and they never disconnect, never disappear. Your experience indicates a problem that Apple may need to address, my friend.

Same problem here, except I don't have a TC. Just an Airport Extreme, iMac, and AppleTV. AppleTV disappears from iTunes randomly and just shows up when it feels like it. I've tried various steps to troubleshoot it, and nothing seems to help.

Make sure you don't have any VPN software on your machine. I thought it didn't matter because I wasnt actually logged in through VPN. As it turns out, the Cisco VPN software has a built in firewall and would block the ports for syncing. I removed the VPN software altogether and my apple tv is now in itunes each and every time. I know everyones problem is different, but this had me puzzled for a long time.

The moment they upgrade the hardware for Apple TV, I will buy one. It's been almost 3 years now and they still have the same old hardware.

I just bought a camcorder that records 1080p, and with a baby on the way I expect to have lots of home video in high-def that I'd like to be able to easily watch on my home tv. The ability to output 1080p video would be great.

Just because it records in "1080p" doesn't mean a thing. It's the codec and compression that matters.

Thanks, that makes sense. I do use VPN (Apple's built in), but very rarely, and it's off when I'm syncing. But it would make sense that it could cause network issues with local devices.

LOL.

It just gets better and better.

Like a lot of people, my Apple TV didn’t sync with iTunes regularly enough to list new content. With 3.0.2, it syncs constantly with iTunes and never stops.

I’ve tried resetting the Apple TV, my Mac and of course iTunes to no avail.

Not sure what people are doing wrong, but my Apple TV syncs perfectly.

I download several daily video podcasts into iTunes and normally when I go into the living room to watch them they're all there. The same is true with music. No sync problems here.

Apple TV +iPad

For some reason, I can't wait to buy the $500 remote control for my $230 appleTV. Come on iPad!!

The recent iTunes update seemed to fix this for me.

Apple took my suggestion

It looks like Apple liked my suggestion that I sent to them about 3 weeks ago. Now, on Internet radio you have 2 lines of text; the first is the station's name and second they are now showing the name of the song and the artist. It's the second line of text with the song's name and artist that I suggested to Apple to have on Apple TV. I ask them why is it that only iTunes shows both lines of text and not Apple TV? Apparently, they like my idea since it would both please the customer and possibly bring in more revenue for Apple. There's been several times on internet radio on Apple TV that it would play a song that I liked and would have bought from Apple if they had simply put in that second line of text. I didn't feel like rushing to my computer and turning it on and going to iTunes and finding out this information because by that time the song would be over. By the way, that second line of text does not scroll automatically (with a long amount of text) like the first line does but, hey, it's better than nothing.

It's good to see positive reports about the Apple TV on this thread as all you usually see is the complaints which made me wonder if it was the normal internet selection bias where people who just like the product enjoy it in peace or something else.

My syncing performance was the only thing horrible about the device. Then someone gave me the tip to turn IPv6 OFF on my network and BAM now it's perfect.

I have my apple tv hooked up via ethernet and the performance hasn't been that great for syncing. Did you disable IPv6 on the apple tv, or on the iTunes machine or both?

I'm always on the edge of buy/don't buy an Apple TV.

I'm always on the edge of buy/don't buy an Apple TV. They really aren't expensive but … I just don't know.

Currently I have two TiVo units, each with two tuners. I also have my Mac Mini which I connect to my TV once in awhile (HDMI and digital/optical audio 5.1 surround sound) to what what I have on it (my Mac Mini).

I'm not one to listen to music when I'm at home. My wife and I have different tastes in music. What we have in common is small. So when we are in the car, if we listen to anything, it is audio books.

Which of you have both TiVo AND Apple TV? Do you watch a lot of shows with TiVo? Does you ALSO use your Apple TV very much?

The main reason for using my Mac Mini is importing DVDs and picking them off the Front Row interface instead of inserting DVDs into DVD player, which I hate.

I have an ATV and a TiVo HD. I use TiVo HD for live TV, timeshifted sports, and for staying up-to-date on a few select shows. I use Handbrake to "timeshift" my snail-mail Netflix account, so the ATV has a huge selection of movies available for when there's time.

Because I have 40-50 unwatched movies waiting on the ATV, I rarely use Netflix streaming (or ATV rentals) - but those are nice to have if there's a movie that I need to watch RIGHT NOW that I hadn't planned ahead for...

Thanks Jacquesass. I think I would use it the exact same way.

I have a TivoHD and an ATV as well. We use the Tivo about 90% of the time, mostly for recorded TV shows and Netflix instant. I've used the ATV mostly for music playback during parties and to watch a few things off iTunes that we need to catch up on. I've hacked it to run Boxee/XBMC/ATV Files but I don't play with those options very much (not as simple or elegant as the basic ATV interface IMHO). My main goal is to access music and videos from my NAS: it has Firefly and UpNp software but ATV can't see it natively; why Apple insists on only 'linking' the device to computers running iTunes is beyond me, especially now that they have done away with the DRM.
