Apple today released iMac (Mid 2010) Display Brightness Update 1.0, a new software update designed to address an issue with display brightness on the company's new 21.5-inch iMac released in late July.

Unfortunately, Apple does not specify the exact issue targeted with the update, although users of the company's last two generations of iMacs have been complaining of buzzing associated with display brightness changes.

I'm not experiencing any problems with mine. I appear to have a perfect one. I'm afraid of doing this update

Damnit, i sure hope this fixes it! I can't test right now because i'm waiting for my replacement. Should come next week.. I suffered from the yellow screen, brightness noise issue & seagate harddrive rumble. If anybody with the brightness noise would be so kind of updating; do let us know the effect!!

My 24inch white core2 duo imac had that brightness buzz. I sent it back 3 times cus it made me mental. Hope my new 27" that is arriving tomorrow carries no such issues. that's insane if they haven't solved it in 3+ years:rolleyes:

Wow, and just today and I was saddened because I felt like my iMacs screen was to dim compared to the last mbp I had. I do have a yellow tint screen though, and not sure if I should have it replaced if they aren't fixed yet. But I just installed this update and im almost positive they up'ed the brightness levels a bit. My background which is a lightning bolt now appears to pop a good bit more on full brightness. I never had any screen buzzing issues or whatever, and still don't.

Looks good!

My iMac hasn't had any buzzing problems, but there is a small tinge of yellow along the bottom and right side... not very noticeable AT ALL, but this update definitely makes the screen pop more than before. Maybe it's just a mind game, but it looks great!

My iMac has a Buzz

My first Gen iMac 24” makes a high pitch whine when it is dimmed. SO in order to dim it I needed to download a program called Shades (http://www.charcoaldesign.co.uk/shades) to dim it with out that annoying noise. After Three and a half years it is about time Apple looked into it.

Well I went ahead and installed the update and it clearly makes the screen much brighter.
Not sure exactly what they did here. But you can no doubt see a big difference

I cannot seem to get mine shipped. Maybe this is the hold up, but per Apple it is the Magic Pad that is supposedly holding the order up.

Installed it, and it has definitely made the display brighter, alot brighter.

I didn't have whining issues before, and I still don't, so all goods =)

O_O My screen is freaking bright.

Yeah, the upped the ante on this update. My screen was already freaking awesome on my new i3 iMac, but this update made it brighter than the sun. I may need to wear sunglasses.

LOL, but the display looks epic.

And of course Apple's policy of not fixing what has been acknowledged to be broken in previous generations continues: No fix for the lack of setting a screen brightness preference in my 24" 3.06 aluminum. Guess they'd rather not reveal how subpar the screen actually is when it's not eye-burning bright...

? I can dim it no problem. What's your issue?

Same here!

There's no retention of the brightness preference setting. After every restart, it defaults back to the absolute brightest. Even my 2001 iBook can retain a brightness preference. It might be apples and oranges between the 2 models, but that seems like a pretty basic thing to have included across the board.

This is a permissions error in Mac OS X. This happens to volume levels, too. You need to locate the brightness plist and delete it. A reboot will confirm that you can now preserve your desired brightness setting.
