I gave up on the El Capitan PB1 in < 2 days on my 2012 Mini. Too many issues, including Safari crashes. Annoying when I'm trying to work. CrashPlan crashes were just melting icing on the cake. I had to relegate El Capitan to only my 2008 MacBook Pro 17 for now, on which it seems to have few (if any) noticeable problems. Both systems have been retrofitted with Samsung 830 or 850 Pro SSDs, so that generally helps.

I don't know what people are talking about when they say 10.10.4 is so "slow" or problematic. It runs well - and certainly a whole lot better than the current El Capitan on my Mini!

Thanks for your quick note on this. Now that I've installed the EFI update, I'll try El Cap again when the next PB comes out (reverting back is painless with CCC).

Yes, I too am having a lot of issues with the beta version of El Capitan on my late 2012 mini. I am giving it one more version to see if it resolve the major issues and if not, go back to OS X Yosemite until El Cap comes out officially. It runs good on my Mini 2012, but El Cap still has many issues to work out before release. Starting to get so I cannot work at all without bugs all over the place. Need a can of "Raid" :)

Why? There was only just a new one released recently

The post was a remember for some (like remembering not getting what you wanted for your Birthday or Christmas) when the latest Mac Mini 2014 came out. MANY were waiting for the next version, but were very disappointed. Like myself, many instead bought a Mac Mini 2012 and I can say I do not regret it one bit actually. Better performance.

The issue for some was the CPU. Some (like myself) needed quad-core for what we do for work. Some of us cannot afford a Mac Pro and iMac is not necessary if we already have a thunderbolt monitor. Bought a Mac Mini 2012 and expanded it (will not do that again - very difficult), but those that did reaped the rewards. Saved over $1,000 over buying something else with the equivalent horse power.

Maybe it would work better if you used an IBM keyboard like I do ;) (no, really, it's a genuine IBM keyboard)!

That's just it, I actually DO use an IBM keyboard. An original mechanical clackety clack "Model M" from the late 80s. I'm using it through a PS/2 to USB adapter, and I always suspected the adapter might be the problem. But then this EFI update comes out and my eyebrows go up.

Oh, I see. It will be interesting to hear whether this update clears it up.

I noticed Apple didn't claim it was third-party keyboards - just USB keyboards.

My IBM keyboard is only 8 or 9 years old, a USB model from the IBM Thinkpad era. No "clackety clack" here.

WOW... now if they only made it compatible with the old 30" display. My old display was barely recognized by the Mini and needed a lot of restarting and unplugging-plugging in to get it working about 30% of the time.

Odd, my 30" ACD Works just fine. Perhaps you have a bad dual-link DVI adapter?

Never had any trouble with my aluminum USB keyboard either.

My 2012 Mini has been fine. I use it as a pseudo headless (connected to TV via HDMI) media/utility server. I administer it via Screen Sharing. Runs Indigo for home automation, Sighthound records security cameras, CrushFTP serves up files, C-Tivo makes backups of Tivo shows and converts them to AppleTV format to use on iPads when we travel, etc etc. Yes I would prefer it had a discreet graphics card in it, but nonetheless it's been a really solid machine. I only recently moved it up to Yosemite and that went fine. What's not to like?

Wasn't there an EFI update not too long ago? I rarely attach a keyboard - only if I'm having trouble with Screen Sharing.

They need a firmware update for the 2014 mac mini that fixes the embarrassing problem where it's not as fast as the model that was released 2 years before it.

I have a late 2012 iMac and I sometimes have this issue with my third party keyboard. It's rare, but it happens. I wonder if this problem is more widespread but hit mostly Minis because they tend to be used more with third party keyboards, not coming with keyboards themselves.

The problem has only been around for a week or two since the 10.10.4/EFI update. It was happening every time my Mini went to sleep.

I have one of these. Waking it from sleep was sometimes slow but a past update fixed this. I never had the problem with the BT keyboard though (although I think I was only able to wake using the BT M mouse.

I did learn smth odd last week, I accidentally shut off my BT antenna and could not find a way to switch it back on. I was able to login but then the antenna auto switched off. I was only able to solve this by using a Logitech wireless usb mouse. (I found no useful guidance on the Apple web site and even the Apple Care tech I spoke to had no idea how to resolve this.). I find it odd that Apple has (seemingly) has not developed a method to recover from such a mistake as well as no warning requiem get confirmation of the command before execution.

I thought a cold start would prompt you for a BT setup, at least mine does with BT on and the mouse turned off[?], assumed it would do the opposite way (i.e., BT disabled on the Mini, but BT devices on)

Otherwise, here's a way to deal with disabled BT on the mini.

First, under Prefs >> Keyboard >> Shortcuts there's an option at the button for Full Keyboard Control, make sure that's set to ALL CONTROLS (so you can tab to toggles, buttons, etc.)

Then, if you want to toggle BT, just Command+Space to get Spotlight, enter 'bluetooth', you should get the System Pref as a search result (most likely the top hit), then TAB on the KB until you get to the Bluetooth ON/OFF button and use SPACE to press it.

(This of course assumes a USB KB, and a BT based mouse/trackpad)

:)

i've had an iPhone for several yrs and was still using Windows XP it was the Mac Mini that made me give up windows and go with a Mac it was scary since I didn't know much about a Mac. I got an I5 upgraded the ram to 16GB and got an SSD 512, it's the best money I spent on a PC and couldn't be happier. I love my Mac Mini it's super super fast and I could keep my Dell monitor which was still in great shape. What I love most is how Apple updates everything for me.

why would it take them 3 years to fix such a basic problem? and if so why even fix it?
Apparently it was something that broke in the update that was just released with 10.10.4 and in the corresponding firmware update for earlier versions of OS X.

After the update my mini won't manually sleep. In other words, if I let it idle it will eventually, go to sleep on its own. That takes longer than pre-update. I'm in the habit of putting to sleep from the drop down menu when I'm done. Now it wakes right back up. They messed up something. I didn't even have the original issue. That's frustrating.

I can confirm that my Mac mini is sleeping just like it use to and waking up by moving the mouse or keyboard so this update worked so glad they fixed this.

Does a usb keyboard need to be connected to a MM? Because this update does not show up in my 2012 MM Software Update list.

No, I got the update on mine which do not have wired/USB keyboards.
