Apple today seeded the first betas of upcoming iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 updates to public beta testers, opening up the software to the general public. Today's beta comes one day after Apple provided the beta to developers.

Public beta testers who have signed up for Apple's free beta testing program can download the ‌iOS and iPadOS 16.‌2 betas over the air after installing the proper certificate from the Public Beta website.

iOS 16.2 and iPadOS 16.2 introduce the Freeform app, which can be used for jotting down notes, sketching, drawing, brainstorming ideas, creating mood boards, and more. Multiple people can work on the same Freeform board, with changes synced for all participants in real time.

For the iPad, the update brings external display support to the Stage Manager multitasking feature, allowing up to eight apps to be used at once. External display support is available for the M1 and M2 iPad models.

There is a new Home app architecture coming in iOS and iPadOS 16.2, which Apple says is designed to bring faster, more reliable performance, especially in homes with a lot of smart home accessories. The new architecture requires the HomePod 16.2 beta software, and it causes the Home app not to work with devices updated to iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, or macOS Ventura 13.1.

Unintentional Emergency SOS calls can be reported to Apple in iOS 16.2, and there are a few other minor changes that can be found in our iOS 16.2 feature guide.

I've been using iPadOS 16.2 beta 1 just fine.

Freeform

Known Issues

  • Can’t delete boards while offline, or if iCloud data is disabled for Freeform. (100294085)
Workaround: Go to Settings (System Setting on macOS) > Apple ID > iCloud, then in the Apps using iCloud section, toggle Freeform to On.
  • Adding or removing collaborators can fail while attempting to change share settings. (101186059)
Workaround: Close the share sheet and try to add or remove the participants again.

Stage Manager

Known Issues

  • While using Stage Manager with an External Display, dragging a second window to the workspace incorrectly hides the Recent Apps list—shifting all windows in the workspace to the right. (98540114)

SwiftUI

Resolved Issues

  • Fixed: Animated layout changes now support up to a 120hz refresh rate on ProMotion displays. (83563866)

TV App

Known issues

  • Play tracking (Up Next, and Top Shelf Update) won’t work for all platforms. (101258095)

Does this imply that when 16.2 comes out, every device in a home using HomeKit all has to be upgraded at once? The HomePod mini, the Apple TV, and any iPhone, iPad, or Mac that wants to use "Home"? If that's the case I want to make sure TV and HomePod updates are not automatic. If it's only the case for the beta period, no worries.

I'm getting an error downloading this.

"Software Update Failed. An error occurred downloading iPadOS 16.2 Public Beta"

It's a new M2. My M1 doesn't show the error, so it's an M2 thing. Wonderful.

note: plenty of space. And I'm betting it's all the new ones, as I'm just probably the first. Maybe not.

I have not had wifi issues with my iPhone 14 Pro or iPad Pro M2 with 16.1. OR - I am somehow not noticing it... Kinda not sure I want to upgrade to the beta and risk it..

Freeform app seems cool. Unsure how much I will use it but it seems decent.

If I click the share button though it seems to think I’m not signed into iCloud. It takes me to settings where I am in fact signed into iTunes so I can’t share, assuming that’s a restriction in the beta .

I really don't need a new OS every year. I'll never complain about free new features every year, but like many people on here, it seems I'd prefer they just get back to everything being rock solid in performance. I hardly ever used to experience bugs with Apple products, and now it seems like I'm always encountering them.

You mean to tell me that my hour commute each way, 30 minute water cooler talk, non-stop colleague "drop bys", non-stop building "alarm tests", happy-hours starting an hour before EOD made me MORE productive?
Don't bother. There is a strong WFH bias from some people. They believe WFH means slacking off all day watching TV and playing video games. As if someone could stay employed that way. They also act like the software and hardware was perfect before WFH became a bigger thing. They are personally too irresponsible to work remotely and be productive (therefore stay employed) so they project that onto all others.

Does Freeform have the same critical flaw as Notes, where there is no file versioning or ability to do backups of your work? Can you revert back to an earlier version of your file? (Think Time Machine.)

Unless this app has a backup/versioning feature, you would be insane to trust important notes or thoughts in these apps. Especially when collaborating with other yahoo's in your organization. 🙄
