Alongside the fourth macOS Ventura 13.3 beta that came out today, Apple has provided a new beta of the 16.4 firmware that's designed for the Studio Display. The beta comes a week after the third Studio Display 16.4 beta.

All Studio Display models are able to receive over-the-air firmware updates, but this firmware update is limited to Macs that are running the macOS Ventura 13.3 beta at the current time. Studio Display owners running macOS Ventura 13.3 can go to System Settings > Software Update to install the firmware.

Apple has not provided details on what's included in the firmware update.

They should add a “power off” or reboot feature to the studio display from macOS. It’s an ok 5k monitor if you are coming from a 5 year old+ Mac/or display but the inability to reboot or turn off by plug only is silly. (Had to add a HomeKit plug as part of this automation before climbing underneath surge protector + desk to hard unplug)

I want to point out the shade thrown at the camera. The poor quality is one of my favorite features. I DO NOT want to be seen in 8k by my coworkers. I consider the low quality a feature. This display is one firmware update away from perfection.

I have to agree. Center stage is pretty cool (although annoying when the cat walks into the frame). The quality is enough for Zoom/Teams. I don't want crystal clear sharpness of my face when I'm on a 6am teleconference with my boss.

There is an A13 Chip in it so just unlock Apple TV!
Of course they could not "just" do it. For one, It has neither Wifi nor Bluetooth and thus no way to stream content or receive input. Also, there is no Apple TV with an A13 chip, so they would have to make a dedicated tvOS distribution just for this niche hardware use.

how do you know what firmware you have

Check your firmware version

To check the firmware version of your Studio Display, choose Apple menu  > About This Mac, click System Report, then click Graphics/Displays. In the Studio Display section, the firmware version is listed next to Display Firmware Version.

dude so true, I wonder what about 5K made it impossible to do.
Apple made the 5K iMacs before there was any available support for that resolution.

So they built their own proprietary solution to make it work..

Upside you got 5K, downside you’re no longer running a plug and play solution.

..so Target display mode over display port was lost..

Early days of 4K was kinda the same, you had to use dual displayport since most gpus didn’t do 4K and most screens where actually 2x 1080p panels put together.

Early adoption is a mixed bag :)

so interesting, thanks for taking the time to explain!

I think I'd opt for Samsung's Viewfinity S9 monitor. At some point, you know Apple will decide that you have owned this particular Studio Display long enough and move it into the vintage or obsolete category by ensuring none of its computers work with its firmware any longer.
