I’m hoping (maybe against hope since its not mentioned) that this fixes a problem that just appeared on one of my original HomePods. The HomePod will seemingly randomly lose all bass and sound like a tinny, cruddy phone speaker. The bass will come back after a while, and then disappear again. Since it seems the thing is capable of producing bass still, I’m hoping its software related. 😔

Seems like a hardware issue.

I mean, I guess we could say it could be either, so thats not terribly helpful. It could be a loose connection, it could be a failing component, it could be a wonky software issue. Of course, hardware issues make it a dead end, which will be sad. Are you able to elaborate on why you think it’s probably a hardware issue? I’m curious, haven’t been able to find an answer elsewhere. Or was this more of a hit-and-run rain on my parade lol

Good news! I’ve listened to a few songs after the update, and it’s not having the issue anymore! Knocking on wood it doesn’t come back of course, but before the update, the no-bass problem would occur frequently within the course of a single 3-minute song. Thank goodness for this software solution! I love my HomePod!

Not at all, sorry if my post came the wrong way, is just speculation based on the (admittedly very few) homepods that I have witnessed suffering for uhm "losing sonic properties" all of a sudden, like bass o treble. Its very strange to me that a software issue can cause things like that. More likely is a hardware issue "stressed out" by a software update, like when a computer hard drive fails after updating the OS.

All of them ended replaced at Apple Stores after the technicians checked that they indeed sounded like a tiny phone speaker, and that that wasn´t normal at all.

A loose connection (that is, a faulty unit), was the most common diagnostic.

All is well that ends well. Enjoy!

My original HomePod stereo pair connected to an Apple TV has been acting really weird. A HomePod mini or individual HomePod in other rooms seem to be taking requests when I’m standing right next to the stereo pair.

This pair also frequently cannot find any music on Apple Music even though when I ask the individual HomePod, it’ll find the song I just asked for.

I’m impressed that Apple has been treating the discontinued HomePod as a currently active product with frequent updates but I’m concerned that it’s increasingly being excluded in testing and is accumulating bugs.

My longer term backup plan is to turn off Siri on the originals and use a Mini to act as the Siri device and the originals just work as AirPlay speakers that the Mini serves music to. Alternatively, Works With Siri devices like an Ecobee thermostat or Matter enabled voice assistants could use the HomePod as speakers. AirPlay isn’t going anywhere. The original AirPort Express I with AirTunes that became AirPlay worked for almost 20 years!

I have this problem on my regular big HomePods. Driving me crazy. Sound cuts out. Then after a bit comes on only to cut out again.
It could be a hardware problem. Mine failed, and I read it's a fairly common problem. Let us know if the update fixes it.

I still have the problem of my HomePod playing some random playlist by itself, all at random times during the day and night.
I control mine sometimes from the Music app from my Mac, and sometimes by voice. I've noticed those are 2 separate playlists/modes - if the Music app quits, and I tap the HomePod, it will resume playing whatever playlist was playing when I last controlled it by voice.

That was a source of confusion for me at first.

OMG thank you I thought I was going crazy. Apple TV seems to be doing it between episodes as well.

Still the same. I find it highly unlikely that both speakers start doing this concurrent with the previous update That it would be a speaker failure. I also updated appletv at same time as HomePods. Restarted everything. same thing if I cast diectly to HomePods with my iPhone with apple music.

Fixed a long-standing issue with a certain song I’d try to have playing!

I really hope the new homepod rumor is true. I would like 2 new HomePods to add to my current 4 OGs and 2 minis.

Before this update, my 2 HomePod Minis and my OG HomePod would stop playing after two or three songs when using them as AirPlay receiver from either my iPhone or my Mac. This update fixed that.

Not sure if somebody else have experienced this but, since upgrading to the 15.5, my OG HomePod stopped playing any sound when configured as default Audio Device on my Apple TV 4K.

Not sure what was the issue, I even tried resetting it, still the same issue. This however was not affecting playing the music directly using Apple Music on it, or even while using it as a output while playing Apple Music from the iPhone.

The update is downloading and installing as I write it. I hope the problem of not functioning as a default output from Apple TV gets fixed.

This has been happening for months on my OGs and Minis... a full reboot fixed it, but it was annoying as hell! Glad it is being addressed. I just hope it actually does fix it!

So far, the track-stopping issue appears fixed for me. I have a Scene that starts a thunderstorm track (don't ask) every night at bedtime, and it would always stop after 5–15 seconds, try after try after try, unless I restarted my HomePod. Last night, it worked fine, first attempt.

Like another user above, mine coincidentally or not also had to do with playing a certain white noise track from Apple Music’s library. It would never play past 5-15 secs, and now it’s just fine. Prior to some recent update I hadn’t been getting the issue though.

Oh you meant about the rumor. Just some Kuo rumor reported here earlier in this week or last about a potential new HomePod 2 coming. What’s unknown is if the sound on this rumored new HomePod will be better, the same, or worse than the OG HomePods. As well, what is unknown is if the form factor will remain the same (Kuo said likely hardware will not change?).

It’s all pretty unknown. I would just love it if Apple did a HomePod Max and sold even bigger ones with even more phenomenal sound.
