Apple now has a dedicated iCloud Passwords add-on designed for the Firefox browser, which means Firefox users can access passwords and logins stored in the Passwords app or iCloud Keychain when using Firefox on a Mac.

The extension is being distributed by Apple, but it appears that it was originally created by a third-party developer and later taken over and updated by Apple.

With the iCloud Passwords extension, passwords stored in iCloud Keychain can be securely filled in automatically when signing into websites in Firefox. New passwords created in Firefox are also saved to iCloud Keychain, which makes them available across Apple devices, plus there is an option to generate verification codes.

Alongside iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia 15, Apple introduced a dedicated Passwords app that houses all passwords and logins, making them easier to access and manage. The extension works with the Passwords app in macOS Sequoia, but it is also compatible with macOS Sonoma. In macOS Sonoma, passwords and login information are stored in the Passwords section of the Settings app.

I wish it didn’t ask for a verification code every single time I want to use password. Make an option for remember for a day or something.

It doesn't ask that often on Chrome. It does ask every time you close the browser or put the computer to sleep, or after a day.

It's still annoying.

I don't like my passwords to be in a cloud...

I get that. I balanced it by not storing my email, Apple or primary bank password in the passwords app. Those three are memorized.

On my iPad using pretend Firefox, it already pops up the choice to use its own or iCloud's password manager. It wouldn't offer to export new passwords to keychain, though, so that's nice. Good to hear this is becoming available for PC, too, because there wasn't really a point to my installing the keychain in Windows before. Am surprised to hear it wasn't already a thing on MacOS, though.

I don't know if this is enough to sway me to leave 1Password but it's a step in the right direction. You can use 1P for secure notes, credit cards, software license keys, etc. Not sure if Apple's solution can handle any of that.

You can create custom entries with text notes in iCloud Passwords.
The notes are plain text on the screen aren't they?

I wish you could add custom fields like "memorable information" that you get asked to supply the 3rd and 6th character from, for example.

Yes, and it sucks.
hard agree. the icloud password ux in chrome has so many janky steps, it is easier to just open keychain and get your password manually. i can't help but feel like this was done on purpose. will firefox be any better?

Yes. I actually prefer that to predefined forms, though I’m using a separate software for it (for multi-platform support).
I was switching between NordPass and Passwords. The lack of a standalone app for macOS really annoys me.

I guess with Passwords, once you've authenticated it makes no difference. Even with hidden fields you can just tap them to copy/reveal

Finally! I was actively looking for it, before cancelling my LastPass subscription. Just need to make sure the experience is good enough.

Is it really supposed to work on a Windows PC? The extension page says "The iCloud Passwords extension is compatible with macOS Sonoma or later." and if I install it in Firefox on a PC it gives this message. The MacRumors article states that it should work on a PC or a Mac.

I this the same extension that was updated last in May 2024 and I am already using since many months? I don't see another one. It seems they just renamed it from Keychain to Passwords or changed the icon to the one of the new Passwords app.

When I search I find that and when I click on it, it's still the one I am using since months:
