Apple Releases iOS 12.4.2 Update for Older iPhones and iPads

Ummm what about newer devices that want to stay on iOS 12?

Now don't stop signing iOS 12.4.1 because I have to do a DFU install on my 7+

I have the same question. I had updated my SE to 13.1, but it caused my Apple Watch to no longer be able to send messages, so I went back to 12.4.1.

I guess security doesn’t matter on these devices.

Also not possible on newer devices when they are on ios 12
Well then just forget it reinstalling iOS 12 on my 7+. The earpiece speaker works fine for phone calls but won't play stereo when listening to music. A tech told me to do a wipe and reinstall of iOS 12. Now I'm afraid to try it. If it forces me to go to iOS 13 then I loose the App Store on iTunes 12.6 and Apple Configurator 2 to install apps requires Mojave. I'm on El Capitan. What a headache!

Hoping there are bug fixes -- noticed a few new buggy behaviour since what I thought was the last and final update and got a little worried there.

5s FOR LIFE!!!

Did someone here say "2012 Mac Pro unable to update to MacOS Catalina"? Its only got 12 cores, 32 GB RAM, and an AMD RX 580 graphics card - but sure, no planned obsolescence going on here. ;)
I get your point, but it really is apples and oranges for an old phone vs a still very powerful computer.

This is nothing new; Apple has released updates for devices stuck on older iOS versions before if there are major security problems, or to keep major features from breaking.

There are a lot of iPhone 6 users out there and it would be irresponsible to leave them vulnerable especially this soon after iOS 13 came out.
Let me know how many Android vendors are updating their old devices from 5+ years ago.

Wait wait wait. My iPad Pro was presented with 12.4.2. I checked at lunch to see why 13 hadn't downloaded yet.

Sure, but those who say that Apple is perpetuating planned obsolescence through software updates are still correct (at least in my opinion). The problem is on the MacOS side, so the release of this update doesn't change anything as your earlier post implies.

Good on Apple for promptly releasing security updates for older devices.

What a stark contrast to the mess that is Android. It’s no wonder Android phones are worthless after a few years. A 2016 Galaxy S7 goes for $75 on eBay, a 2016 iPhone 7 goes for $200+.
