Apple today released the iOS 13.4.1 update for iPhone SE owners, suggesting iPhone SE models arriving to customers tomorrow will have iOS 13.4 installed and will need a day-one software update.

iPhone SE owners can install the new update over-the-air tomorrow through the Settings app. To access the updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

iOS 13.4.1 was released for other iPhones on April 7 to address an issue that prevented devices running iOS 13.4 from participating in FaceTime calls with devices running iOS 9.3.6 and earlier or OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and earlier. Release notes for the update are below:
iOS 13.4.1 includes bug fixes for your ?iPhone?.

- Fixes an issue where devices running iOS 13.4 could not participate in ?FaceTime? calls with devices running iOS 9.3.6 and earlier or OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and earlier.
- Addresses a bug with the Settings app where choosing a Bluetooth from the quick actions menu on the Home screen would fail.
The iPhone SE was announced last week, with pre-orders taking place on April 17. The first deliveries of the new device will begin tomorrow.

Once again, I must say, as an Apple user, I sometimes take for granted the extreme attention to software we receive from the company. I have to be reminded occasionally how much of a pain updates are on Androids and Windows. This is a hallmark of Apple and one that has kept me as a customer for years.

I am NOT doing any updates for any of my Apple Devices until this Pandemic subsides. Way too many updates in the past have created issues and now would be the worst time for problems. My MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, iPhone etc work fine as is so no need for new bells and whistles at the moment.

What a weird rant on a post for a patch specifically meant to fix functionality problems, and not for new “bells and whistles”.

This is odd. Usually newly released Apple devices ship with the latest update already installed. I'm guessing this day one patch is due to the delayed iPhone SE release?

not weird at all... all the poster is saying is he or she is passing on minor updates at the moment in case a device bricks or something else leaving it not operational. I passed on the minor updates as well, not because I’m worried but because I don’t care.

So I'm moving from the old SE to the new SE tomorrow. Should I update the OS before or after transferring my data across?

not won’t matter cause at some point you will only be able to go so far on the old software, if anything your backup has a newer version the new SE will make you update before anything

Are you exercising similar caution in other parts of your life? Avoiding eating leftovers since maybe they went bad? Not using soap in the shower since it’s slippery? CAREFUL!

I’m annoyed that once I updated to 13.4 it’s brought along a multitasking bug, sometimes switching apps will somehow automatically open the messages app... when it’s not even in the drawer. I don’t know if others are experiencing this, my messages app on the home screen is on the bottom row and far left.

I believe in the new iOS versions you can actually update before finishing set up now. I saw on someone else’s phone and was surprised because other times if I’ve had replacement phones I would have to set it up first, update, then restore the backup

Apple had better step up their game with iOS 14, though I'm not holding my breath on that one.
You are right, it's not good that the update frequency of Apple software has increased dramatically over the year. I recall the stability of OS X Tiger.
But Apple does not have a lot of 'competition'. Updates on Android are even worse. In the Play Store to happens quite often that you download & install an App that needs instant updating. You would expect that the version you download from the store IS the latest version.

Possibly. It’s also possible that 13.4.1 wasn’t ready by the time they had these phones packaged up.

You’re confusing app updates with OS updates. If you don’t like OS updates Android is the way to go because after a few years the only way you’re getting an OS update is getting a new phone 😂

You should update the OS on the new SE before doing the data transfer, assuming you are on 13.4.1 on the old SE.

The thing is that there's standards, licenses and regulations for all of those. The bacterial content of food is regulated by law. The slipperiness of shower surfaces is regulated by ASTM F462-79, AS HB 198, etc. A licensed engineer who's passed minimum education requirements, and government tests, is the only one who can certify compliance with safety-crticial requirements. Cars, electrical appliances, drugs, and so forth all have standards. Lawsuits over these things are common.

For consumer software, there's no regulations on how well it has to work, how much testing is appropriate, and you've completely disclaimed your right to sue in the license agreement. And there's no such thing as a licensed software engineer.
