Yeah I’m pretty ticked off at Apple over stuff like this. They supported iOS 12 for years. My grandmother has a 6S, and it’s not cool to know there’s exploits that are unpatched. (And no, she won’t pay $400 for a new phone.)

So, when I hear the usual refrain “if Apple drops support, they’ll still get security updates for a few years”, I get a little hostile.
Apple never really commits to support except for the current versions of iOS and MacOS etc... this is one thing I dislike considering I like to keep my devices a long while and get the most value out of them... at some point your just never sure if a security patch or essential update will drop...

Microsoft at least specifies hard end dates for software and hardware support..

Cool. Updating my 14 pro. Going to stay on iOS 16 as long as possible. iOS 17 only has one feature I’m interested in. 48mp HIEF. But it’s still not enough to make me jump from this super polished bug free experience I’m having with my year old 14 pro. It just feels good!

Maybe around Christmas time or new years the itch will need to be scratched. But then I’d have to update my series 6 to watch os 10 and with all of the annoying changes they did with that I may just hang out for a long time on my current versions! Side button for control center? What is that? Lol and all of the watch os 10 destroyed my battery threads I think I’ll just say put.

This update is also available for iPhone 14 Pro

Wondering if this will be the last update and they will get rid of the option below to hold off on iOS 17.
If you see the word beta after updating then there's still may be one more update.

You are incorrect. My iPhone 13 Pro Max can run iOS 17, but I haven't updated to it yet. I am installing 16.7.1 right now via Settings -> General -> Software Update.

MacRumors' headline is basically wrong - and disagrees with the article text, to boot.
People think that anyone who could install iOS 17 has already done so and would be confused why someone would hold off. o_O

I keep getting Update Failed on my iPad 7th gen.. I'm currently on 16.7. Says Update Requested for a bit, then about 12 seconds remaining and counts down then Preparing Update then Software Update Failed An error occurred download iPadOS 16.7.1. No error code or anything else.. My 13 Pro Max just updated fine.. Any ideas? I tried connecting to my Air running Monterey 12.7 and it doesn't show me 16.7.1 as available.. only 17. Wondering if Apple is forcing 17 on us with 7th gen?

This is good, but the fact that there’s still no iOS 15 security update is inexcusable.
macOS Monterey is from the same year and it’s still getting security updates
Yep and there are devices stuck on iOS 15 that should have gotten iOS 16.

Sick of Apple not developing a clear software support strategy/timeline. iOS 15 should still be being patched.

Did anyone get handoff not working after the upgrade? iPad Pro 2018 on 16.7.1. and M1 MBP on 13.6.1. Tried rebooting, and reactivating handoff on both devices, still not working. even tried a wired connection, it just refuse to work..

FYI..If anyone is curious, I think I may have figured it out... I had about 2gb free I think when I checked.. I was frustrated and I really didn't want to go to 17, but I clicked on it to update to it, and it said I didn't have enough space. I deleted iMovie app which was about 600mb of space. It then said I had 5.2gb of free space which was weird.. Then I clicked on the 16.7.1 update and it seems to be proceeding.. Nothing indicating I didn't have enough space previously, and yet the discrepancy in the amount of space it said was available... I've never seen this before.. Really weird.. I'll update if successful or not.. It's still in "Preparing"... Preparing preparing, you're always preparing...JUST GO!.. Ludicrous Speed, GO!

Just finished the update. Went fine. Have 5.7gb free now. Hope this helps someone.

Apple today released iOS 16.7.1 and iPadOS 16.7.1, new software updates that can be downloaded on iPhones and iPads that are not able to run iOS 17, or those that have not yet been updated to the new operating system. iOS 16.7.1 comes a few weeks after Apple released iOS 16.7.

The software can be downloaded on eligible iPhones and iPads over-the-air by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

With iOS 17 now out, iOS 16 updates are limited to security improvements and performance optimizations. New features will be added to iOS 17 rather than iOS 16.

The iOS 16.7.1 update likely addresses the same kernel vulnerability that Apple fixed in iOS 17.0.3 last week. The issue was exploited on versions of iOS before 16.6, according to Apple.

I hope it's true cause I have an iPhone 7 Plus and I'm not planning on upgrading anytime soon.

iOS 16.7.1 includes further de-optimisations to get the last few users remaining on iOS16 to update to iOS17.
Also, the 16.7.1 patch was released full week after it was patched in iOS 17.0.2 per https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201222. This delay is horrid since the patch in both versions is for the same ZERO-DAY kernel vulnerability, CVE-2023-42824, which is rated high by NIST: https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-42824

Also, Apple's patch descriptions for both patches say iOSs before 6.6 and are vulnerable which puzzles me since that implies 6.7 and 17.0 were not vulnerable, hence, why the patch if one is on those versions?

Mine works fine.. no issues

What I'm worried about is if I did update to 17 on iPad and iPhone if things will quit working between them and my MBA on 12.7. That's why I haven't updated yet.. Sure would be nice to know if someone has done this..
