Because it's the right thing to do.

There's still plenty of iOS 12 users.
That's nice but not a real explanation. Are these devices that cant be upgraded past 12 under some sort of regulatory requirement, because apple had no qualms abandoning updates for other devices and computers

Can't be upgraded due to hardware requirements (mainly RAM)

BUT MacRumors people told me that Apple is screwing customers over by doing planned obsolescence!!!!!!!
Oh, this is absolutely planned obsolescence. It’s just planned further into the future. Just wait!

Now that I think about it, the only thing I own that’s not planned obsolescence is a geode. Wait… at some point, even long after I’m gone, that geode is going to be converted back to star stuff by our Sun going supernova. PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE at STELLAR scale!!

Is there any way to get this update if you're on a device that can support iOS 13, but don't want to update?

e.g. We have a few iOS 12 test devices, that should have security updates, but are technically capable of even the iOS 15 betas.
Yes providing there is a specific Ipsw released and it’s not an over the air only download. may have to wait a day or two for sites to make it available if an Ipsw. If you google you’ll find instructions how to do an upgrade install from the file rather than a restore.

(so far I’ve only seen Ipsw files for upto the iPhone 6)

When was the time Google released an Android updated for an 8+ yo device
When did Google EVER release Android supporting even a 4-6yr old device by any manufacturer? Not even SONY’s AOSP, which is great btw for Android stock users - some features will be missing of course - I’m struggling to resurrect a Sony Xperia XZ Compact btw for I.T. learning ( it was $50 CAN in absolutely MINT functioning + cosmetic condition but PINK).

I’ve never seen an android device last long enough to need an update like this 🧐
I have one … never used though lol. Android users really are hard on their devices in the first 2yrs because well incompatible updates so their junk.

Thanks Apple.
Indeed - had to check if my prestige iPhone 4S was supported, missed it by 2yrs - but not complaining.
Good support by Apple.
This isn‘t ‘good support’ … this is straight up and down star, pure LOVE 💕 by Apple right here.

Love baby, 8yr old devices gets security hot-fix update … “nothin’ but the love” (A tribe called quest).
It’s amazing that Apple still provides 8 year old devices with security updates! Android users are lucky to get 1, maybe 2 years of sporadic updates, and that is only guaranteed for flagship devices, not commodity devices, which are 90+% of all Android devices sold.
Right you are friend.
Bravo Apple
Apple iOS team deserves a serious hug on this one.

Completely blind-sided, happy and those just unable, unwilling to, or just happy with their 8yr device are indeed happy campers today.

There are plenty of Macs out there on High Sierra and Mojave which ends support in a few months. Will Apple send the security updates because "it's the right thing to do" in Jan 2022? Doubtful.

Theyre great with ios updates but absolutely terrible with macOS updates. And apple changes so much under the hood that with every update, you can expect something to break - especially if you're stuck on older apps

It should be a general rule, if your app hasn’t been updated to run the latest OS, don’t update to the latest OS. If they never update to the latest OS, then you’re really stuck.

For devices on 12.4 still, how do you download this security update? I'm guessing it's not completely rolled out yet.

It's ready now, just needs a little time on the wifi and it will show up. Settings>General>Software Update (keep checking if it's not there yet).

Uh, if it's important enough and if there's enough users still using it, sure.

They did the same with Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion stopped receiving updates in 2013, but there was a huge security issue and plenty were still using Mountain Lion, so they revived it with 2015 security updates.

I wonder if iOS 12 devices are going to be less secure though still? When you read the release notes for these security patches for it they seem a lot shorter than than for recent versions. It would be nice to have a clarification in policy from Apple for both iOS and MacOS what the lifecycle is.

To be fair, this was their mode of operation for quite a while. Happy to see this change.

Signed, a K-12 IT guy.
I thought they've always provided security updates to the past two versions. Maybe I'm thinking of macOS.
I know for sure they've backported some of the more important patches to older iOS versions before.

Part of why I use such few third-party Mac apps. The OS is hostile to them. And each random thing I install is a security risk, but that aspect is a lot worse in Windows of course.

if your device is capable of running iOS 14.6 then you won't see the update from what I am seeing it is only showing for iPhone 6 and older, iPad mini 3 and older & iPad Air 1 and older.

looks like if the device can run iOS 14 then this update isn't being made available.
