dude this rocks!!!!

i have had this problem twice with iPod shuffles. the first time they just gave me a new one at the apple store. this time i figured the shuffle was old enough they wouldnt give me a new one so i gave up. waiting for the 2G iPod shuffle. but now i might be able to revive my old shuffle!!!! i hope i can. I like it more b/c i use it as a USB flash drive a lot!!!!! and i think that will be harder with the new shuffle b/c ill have to lug around a cable all the time to get it to work as a USB flash drive. i hope it works!

It fixed my problem I got about 2 months ago. It didn't show up in iTunes, but showed up in Finder. Boring to not be able to change music, because it worked fine otherwise. I'm glad it is fixed!

Any Suggestions?

Mine doesn't show up in the system profiler.

The battery is dead and won't recharge through the USB port. I've read that the only way to charge the battery of a Shuffle with this issue is with an AC battery charger.

My guess is that since the battery is dead and won't recharge, the updater can't see the Shuffle.

Any suggestions?

Aaron

Just so we are clear....

Do we have to install this as if it were a software update?

Or is this software used for the times when the iPods broke?

Coz, my shuffle (a replacement one since the previous died on me and got sent back to Apple) is still alright and i don't want to meddle with anything. My motto, if it ain't broke, dont fix it.

This is only for broken Shuffles, so you don't need to do anything.

This problem was associated with most of the ipod shuffles that had sync with itunes 7 on windows. That is why mac folks don’t knew much about it.

I am a mac person and I replaced my shuffle like 3 times. It happened on both Mac (only syncing the Mac) and Windows (ONLY syncing in Windows) I am glad this came out and it makes me feel better about looking at the new shuffle. That thing is so small.

heh I found a shuffle on a bus months ago, but it didn't work (had the flashing lights problem).

I just pulled it out of my drawer to try out this fix, and it now works!

Good for a throw-around little mp3 player.

Was it called iFishy??

I think mine is the same thing. The battery LED glows when I switch it on and it can play music, but it wont charge and it is not recognized via system profiler. I think its dead.

I was in Boise last week for state soccer tournaments, and was tempted to drop inside the Apple store and get another. And now I'm really, really glad I didn't shell out for a new one. My old one works just fine now. Glad I didn't piss away $100 after all. :D

well i never had these problems with my shuffle. now my g/f uses it, and she doesn't have the problems either

Well how interesting, and the point of that post was...?

But one day without warning that shuffle may just completely stop working, as mine did a couple of months ago. And I tried all sorts of restore things using the ipod updater utilities, without success. Then I tried reformatting the drive, using both mac and windows machines with no success. This new utility fixed mine.

So I'm happy with Apple. Thing was, I was definitely going to get a new shuffle as soon as they were available. Now, I'm not sure if I can justify it. So Apple has won me over (belatedly) for Customer Service, but may have lost a sale in the process! Of course, it makes me more likely to get another ipod at some point in the future..oh and my 1G 10GB iPod (the ones with an actual wheel that turns round) is still working great 4 1/2 years after I got it!

If Shuffle is still not recognized, try turning it on and pressing buttons

I was just about to do something drastic with my dead shuffle, when this utlility was released. I was super psyched, but to my disappointment, my shuffle still was not detected by the reset utility. I tried the utility on various other computers, still no luck. In a fit of frustration, I turned the shuffle on while still plugged in to a powerbook's usb port, then I started pressing all the play and forward buttons, etc. That worked! The reset utility saw the ipod, and worked flawlessly.

I hope this helps someone else

Three cheers for the reset utility. I had a shuffle that would randomly mount and unmount. Made it impossible to update. The reset utility fixed it.

a little late for me

I took my 14 month old shuffle to an apple store where they pronounced it dead. I took it home and decided to pull it apart  - with pliers:eek: partly out of frustration, partly out of curiosity ... how was I supposed to know apple would develop a fix 6 months later?:(
