After again wiping iTunes Match libraries today, Apple has seeded developers with the 3rd iTunes 10.5.1 Beta. This update includes a number of important stability and performance improvements for iTunes Match.

Apple wiped iTunes Match libraries stored in iCloud earlier today in order to "prepare for the launch of iTunes Match". The Beta 3 Release Notes warn that Apple may again wipe iTunes match data during their ongoing testing:
iTunes 10.5.1 beta 3 includes a number of important stability and performance improvements for iTunes Match, and is a required update for all subscribers to iTunes Match beta.

Backup regularly and do not delete the music you add to iCloud from your computer. Apple may periodically delete all iCloud libraries during the beta period. This will require you to scan, match, and upload songs again
iTunes Match is Apple's $25/year subscription service that will match your existing iTunes library with 256-Kbps versions in the iCloud. iTunes Match had been scheduled for release in late October, but has been pushed back without any clear launch date available. Apple's wording in the most recent emails suggests an imminent launch.

This is the first build I've noticed without the b at the end of the version number. I am guessing this is the release candidate.

looks like we can rule out a public release this week since this beta just came out and the following week is thanksgiving (they have that whole week off) so end of november release? they probably gonna do testing of this beta for at least a week and then they have to delete the libraries again and than either another beta or the final.

I can see an Music tab with iTunes Match on Apple TV. Anyone can see this too?

I find the idea of having to pay protection money every year to listen to your music a bit silly.

Mischaracterize much? This is a way for you to:

  • Get higher quality versions of you current songs.
  • Get amnesty for songs you've stolen in the past.
  • Easily manage songs across all of your devices, including devices you don't yet own.
Protect your music collection in the event of loss (after beta).

But I suppose some people will always try to put a negative spin on some things, no matter how positive. Bueno. Keep your $25.

Apple Turns on iTunes Match for Apple TV with New 'Music' Section - Nov 2nd

You don't have to pay any money for Protection, Apple already offers the ability to re-download (for FREE) your music that you have previously purchased from iTunes, it is currently available from iTunes on your Desktop computer or directly from your iOS device under the PURCHASED tab.

This is a Free service that is part of iCloud.

This iTunes Match program, like rdlink said, will upgrade your lower quality tracks to a higher 256kpbs (including tracks that have been added to your iTunes collections by other means) and is One Step closer to making our iOS devices PC Free.

i have another question about iTunes match.. does it automatically replace your music on your computer with what it finds in the iTunes match?

I would like to understand what I have to do in order to get the 256kbs version for all my ripped music? Do I have to download those all by hand to my computer or does it work automatically or only when I play a song.

Anyone knows?

Though we'll have to wait to find out for sure, my impression was that once the AAC files were downloaded, they were never "recalled"

So that amounts to $25 to instantly rip all your CD collection and any less than honorable MP3s you have and convert them to 256kbit AAC.

What happens when you quit after one year? We'll see I guess.

I would be seriously surprised if your second point was true.

Yep. Some people either are looking for something to complain about, don't really know the thing they're talking about or remind me of my Uncle Jeff. This guy could get a free winning lottery ticket and complain about the Indian guys at 7-11 who he constantly tells us don't have a right to work at 7-11. Go figure.

I don't think that is the selling point. I think you are paying more for the syncing service that iTunes Match offers. Also higher quality AAC audio files.

I just hope this will do movies too!

It's interesting how people think paying $25 to Apple frees them from the consequences of piracy.

There's no DRM on the Matched Files. They don't expire. After your subscription lapses, you lose the ability to stream and redownload those matched files. That's all.

It's interesting how people think paying $25 to Apple frees them from the consequences of piracy.

It doesn't free them from the legal consequences, but it does allow them to "start over" in a technical sense with a properly ripped file. No more sub 256 kbps Napster/E-Donkey/Kazaa tracks in your library.

No, what happens is once your done with the initial scan and matching. The music on your computer stays the same, if u had a 320k song on ur computer when u hit play it plays that song locally, the same with lower quality songs. But if u delete that song from ur local library, and hit play or download that's when it plays and downloads the 256k song, if it's a matched song. If its an uploaded song it would download the original song just like u originally had in ur library.
