Yep, in response to my initial post, Pre syncing is now broken. Several sources confirm it.

PS: It looks like it tightened up security in regards to IPSW/IPCC files as well. On my MBP, which has all my developer certs installed, I can easily option-click to load up 3.1b2. The desktop, which doesn't have any developer certs, has the beta IPSW grayed out for me.

Can anyone else see if they have this issue?

If Palm wants to have the Pre sync with iTunes, then they need to buy a license from Apple to do that. Other companies have done so. There is a list of compatible devices on the Apple site.

Um, you mean this list?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2172

That goes back 10 years and started with iTunes under OS 9. There is nothing new in that list and they are not licensing it anymore. Maybe you can find an old Rio 500 on ebay. :)

They don't have to license if they don't want though. People can still drag their MP3s over, they don't need iTunes.

I can still select a custom .ipcc file with 8.2.1 (with the appropriate defaults preference set). I have dev certs installed, no idea if that matters.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to see; the computer w/o dev certs can't install custom files, so I'm wondering if Apple somehow locked that out as well.

If Apple is forced to open Mac OS X or iTunes, their will be drivers galore, issues and 1,000,000 times more problems because they have to make software to fight infinite hardwares configs (that ALWAYS causes issues).
Yup, you are 100% Right!, with Apple devices, like iPhone and such, it is easy for me to connect devices to the computer. Try that with Nokia or SE (connect to the computer I mean) and it made me crazy cause it has a 80% chance of fail to detect handphone!

I still see as a good idea to keep the Pre able to sync. iTunes will get more business. When is iTunes going 64bit?!

Maybe if they added FLAC support this would be exciting :(
Yeah, but that wouldn't be proprietary.

Also, iTunes 8.2.1 fixed the issue I was having with my 5.5G Video iPod as well, which caused my iPod to freeze when synced, need to be manually reset, and then resynced again. Tanks, Apple.

I hear the pitter-patter of PalmPre scrambling to reinvent itself as an iTunes compatible user....:eek::eek:

How do you mean that? They certainly are not going to be allowed back into iTunes after all that. Besides, Apple has not let other players or phones into iTunes for years and that was with major licensing and partnership agreements.

Palm is just going to have to go the normal route and either create their won software or partner wit someone who has already done just that.

Now this is what they need to do to keep all itunes mp3 files from working on non-apple devices.

Makes a small edit to the code that only the iPods can read. All music opened in iTunes will receive the small code change...

Now THAT will make some people angry...
