really dumb question about Java and Java Script

Does this Java update help speed up aplets like that are used on Pogo.com. Or are they JavaScript which is anther animal altogether?

If the update improve speed of running those games I'M all for it!

Am I the only one who is not getting this update under Software Update??

I found it through my Software Update:

Did anyone else find that FireFox disables java after this release? I've checked for a new java plugin fore FireFox, but that seems up to date.

I fixed this. I'm posting this because I'm sure someone else has run into this or will.

I reinstalled Java from a download (as opposed to the system updater). That didn't help

Then I reinstalled Firefox 3.6.3. A complete reinstall of 3.6.3 wasn't necessary for this issue (where you backup your profile and delete the other files). I just reinstalled a copy from Mozilla download site.

Then java worked again.

Btw I had some crashes since I've applied the update, don't think it is connected, but...

Which does not mean anything. Oracle isn't an angel, they are a company that's in it to make money. We have no idea what they'll do with Java, that's a fact.

We just have to wait and see. J7 is probably going to be delayed because of this merger.

Can you see any other reason for the purchase? They're now talking about pushing the Sun hardware, but at the time of the buy they were very cool on the idea.

But how many enterprises worldwide have Oracle DB + Java middleware? Add Sun's hardware to that, plus the old BEA Weblogic and they have a complete middleware/backend stack to offer. Well, maybe take weblogic out of that after they introduced their moronic DB licensing model for it.

No, don't worry about Java - worry more about Solaris and MySQL

I know that SPSS and/or PASW statistics uses it. It's quite annoying that every time they update I have to re-hack it to make it work again on 10.6.

how do you hack it? I've got the same problem, so I would appreciate your advice.

this is sheer idiocy on the part of apple. Not even the immediately previous version is allowed

It's not about the reason for buying, everybody knows Oracle is big on Java, that's not the problem. The problem is how they'll handle the open source/enterprise movement, will they start to reserve features only for the enterprise Java edition that has to come with a "paid" annual support license?

They just somewhat did that for Solaris, now it's closed to their hardware only. Solaris is an excellent OS that many sysadmins would love to use on their hardware and now they can't because it's closed down to Oracle's hardware only.
