It's called Garageband for iPad. Right now, you can't ask an iPad more than 8 tracks with some effects and software instruments...

I bet you you can once the iPad gets a quad core A6 processor, which is probably next version.

That's hardware impossible, with iPad, afaik.
USB 2 can cope with 4 mono channels streaming. To stream 5+ mono channels you need to use the firewire port thus you would need a Firewire on the iPad.
cheers

My Zoom R24 begs to differ. It does eight tracks via USB 2.

Or a THUNDERBOLT! Hmmm... iPad and a UA Apollo for the audio I/O and plugin DSP... hmmmm... sounds doable really if they can get the code efficient enough, and make an IP with Quad cores to pull off the mixing and audio playback.

For some reason this brings me out in a cold sweat of fear...

It shouldn't. Logic isn't in need of a complete rewrite like FC was, totally different situation. Not to mention that the many updates like this one show that the current codebase is being worked on (unlike FC which went a long time with zero updates).

As others have pointed out, FC started from scratch because they felt is was necessary to go 64 bit. Logic has already been 64 bit for a couple years, they just need to make some big improvements for the next major update.

we don't want an iOS OSX merger. not now, not ever.

I mean nods like Mountain Lion brings, so people with an iPad don't feel too out of place on a Mac.

However I agree with you in the main: I don't see why people expect Mac OS X and iOS to merge. A full blown OS on your phone? A touch based one on your 27" iMac? Neither seem user-friendly.

The only advantage would be OS X on iPad, and that was possible from day 1, but Apple decided against it, for whatever reasons. :)

New as of Logic 9.1.6

that was the big update, this is minor fixes, the best being multiple CPU offline bounce, at last!
But there are so many bugs still not fixed why? dragging regions often still results in regions of different lengths! and the import feature is awfully buggy, especially compared to Pro Tools.

9.1.7

the update f'd me up. Logic pro which was from the studio boxed upgrade no longer functions. Happens on any song opened in logic pro or with no song. as soon as the program starts there is a screen flash like you are pressing an unusable keyboard key. then the program shuts down with an error.

Since this was an upgrade from express I thought I would try opening express up. Express does not crash however it no longer allows me access to AU's I was using in pro. the WHOLE purpose for me paying for the upgrade was so I could get those plugins. 300 dollar upgrade from a 250 dollar logic express. (you don't even wanna know how angry I was when they plopped it on the app store not even 3 months later for 200 total)

solutions tried:
  • reinstalling from time machine.
  • reinstalling pre 9.17 versions from time machine
  • updating each version.
  • not updating each version
  • reinstalling from disks

i am going to try and repair permissions next.

PS
now why don't boxed versions show up as purchased on app store as well?

logic pro app/logic studio

im an audio pro moving to logic ...can anyone decipher what on earth is the difference between the two .. aside from mainstage and soundtrack.....is it the same product with the same fx and instruments etc... apple site a bit cagey about this ..and the cost difference is well..making it seem your really missing out not getting studio.... any thoughts would be greatly appreciated and thanks
in advance best to all, mr pro tools has worn out its welcome, and i spent a ton on tdm before switch..... thanx again excuse brief rant

Logic pro and Logic studio are pretty much the same thing.

They discontinued the old DVD version that used to cost $499, now it's a download for $199 from the mac app store. It does include all the loops and instruments from the DVD version although some are lossy compressed when they were lossless before.

Soundtrack pro is no longer included but it was a poor app and hadn't been updated in years before finally getting killed off.

Mainstage can be bought separately for $29.

There are a couple other utilities formerly included like Waveburner that look to be gone as well, those may or may not matter to you. The vast majority of people probably will be happy to be able to get it for $199 now and not miss the other extras.

What version of Logic did you have before 9.1.7, and did it run OK?

Make sure you try things like trashing the prefs. And if reinstalling the app doesn't help, it could be at the system level. Definitely make sure you repair permissions along with any other OS/disk diagnostics you can think of.

I've pretty much tried everything I can think of. I consider myself on the pro side of production and fortunately I have other DAW's to fall back on but projects I was working with in logic studio (logic pro specifically) are dead in the water until this is resolved.
things i've tried:
trashing prefs
reinstalling app
updating reinstall
permissions
disk repair
reinstalling from time machine at multiple versions (9-9.1.7)
removing all 3rd party vst's and AU's etc
removing external midi/osc/firewire/usb devices

and more.
the interesting thing is Logic Pro is the only thing affected.
because this version is a studio upgrade from logic express 9 there remains a logic express app in my apps folder. Also updated to 9.1.7. However the 9.1.7 update for logic express did NOT upgrade to logic pro or gain the use of the features only available in the pro version. its basically functioning as logic express would. It does not crash but there is no access to sound designer or any other plugins instruments or AU's exclusive to pro. I have multiple projects that rely on those items so getting this to work in important. I've posted feedback in the apple forums and support areas that include the error log but no actual useful responses yet. also worth noting reason and ableton live both work fine.

Logic pro and Logic express are two different apps, if you upgrade it gives you an installer for the pro version of the app, it doesn't take Express and modify it in any way.

Sorry I don't have any other ideas, something weird is definitely going on with your system. Have you checked to make sure you have all the latest of the "pro kit" and "pro app" type updates? Those probably aren't used by other audio apps.
