I already have EFI 1.4 on my 2009 iMac but the SuperDrive updater says my Optiarc AD-5670S doesn't need the update.

Welcome to the club, I'm going to try calling Apple and see if I can get an engineer.

Edit: The product specialist says that my drive isn't supposed to have the firmware that it currently has and needs a replacement. :(

My early 2008 MBP has this sound as well. I got used to it, but it certainly isnt something that I love to hear... it is weird.

I kind of like the optical drive sound when I wake my mini (or my late 2007 MBP)... then again, I don't use wake on demand yet.

Are you saying that the Optiarc needs replacing? Why?

I spoke with Apple several times this evening about this issue, and they've come back to me and said that there is a problem with the updater and they will now be working on a new one, which should be released in about a week. :)

Great, they must have asked the engineers why our drives had the strange revision. Thanks for reporting! :D

He never actually asked me for the firmware revision. He'd confirmed that my early 2009 iMac needed the update, and that the Mac mini he was using needed it, and that wouldn't update either. Fingers crossed a new update should be coming out soon. :)

Just updated a friends Mac Mini 2009, did the EFI update and then the SD update. Still seeks upon startup. Installation was successful on both updates. Why does it still "seek"?

Just had a call back from Apple - very impressive! They wanted to know the firmware version of my drive, so I told them - 2AHC. The guy referred me to the article, which says only 2AHG will be updated, and once updated it will be 2AHH.

I pointed out that 2AHC is earlier than 2AHG, and that I thought it was an oversight by Apple in that the engineers did not realise that a 2AHC existed when they wrote the updater, and therefore it is being dismissed as not needing the update.

The guy agreed and said he would pass on the information to the engineering team, but that he thought the chances of an update were slim.

Ugh. Hopefully they care :)
