Wow, judging by the massive amount of users contributing to that thread, it must be a widespread thing. I still think it's a hardware problem with that specific machine and not a Leopard/Snow Leopard problem.

Now, if it were a software problem, why would it start popping as soon as you turn the computer on (before the OS is even loaded)?

I've owned many, many Macs and seen many, many, many Macs and I've never run into a "popping speakers" problem.

I'm not saying that your problem doesn't exist, but maybe you should be bringing your Mac to Apple and have them warranty repair it, or think about getting a new computer, because it's not a software problem.

He could try booting into windows and see if the problem is still there.

I'm assuming sarcasm here. :) It actually has been a "widespread" thing that even resulted in a freeware "fix" that fixed the problem for me in Leopard but unfortunately does not work in Snow Leopard:

Google "Mac speaker pop" and you'll find lots of chatter about the popping speaker problem going back to 10.4.

Mine doesn't start popping as soon as I turn the computer on.

This is a first for me too, though I have had the problem with my 2 iMacs where the optical speakers weren't "recognized" automatically or would lose recognition. I'd play, say, a YouTube video and get no audio until I re-cycled through my inputs on the Logitech controller back to the optical input. That tends to get things going again. Annoying.

My bet is the problem is more widespread than assumed because most iMac/MacBook users aren't running their audio to external speakers via the optical jack.

Yeah, I should probably do that. I fear not having a computer for any amount of time, and I also fear that Apple will ultimately just say "It's a software problem," thus making the effort pointless.

I'll probably try the LineIn (by RogueAmoeba) fix as suggested in this thread first:

If there's a problem with your Mac and it's under warranty, Apple can't just say "It's a software problem" and send you on your way. Apple was replacing iPhone 3Gs because the 3.1 software made them go into coma-mode.

Explain your problem to them and see what they have to do.

10.6.2 update problems

perhaps somebody could help me...
I tried to install the snow leopard 10.6.2 update. it froze near the end. afterward, I restarted my computer only to find that itunes, safari and my dashboard, do not work. They each claim to "quit unexpectedly".
Also my Software Update (in preferences), says my installed software include: Mac OS X update 10.6.1, Itunes 9.0.1, and THREE different Mac OS X Update 10.6.2 updates
I am also In china until february and left my snow leopard disc in the States. I am not very tech savvy and if anybody could help me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

Try downloading the 10.6.2 update from Apple's website and re-install it that way.

I tried that already, a few times, and that is why I think Software Update says I have it downloaded three times. any other suggestions?

Guys, I cant trawl through 32 pages... can someone tell me if the update addresses the issues with the WiFi dropping connection ever so often. I have a feeling its linked with Safari too...since now that im using Firefox its happened less often.

Damnit. I think growl mail is broken again. I tried the fix that was in this thread and I don't think it's working.
