I'm surprised Apple still cares about QuickTime. Who uses it anyways?

I use it all the time too. I like it.

I'm betting that apple will someday stop supporting printers in general, but at the moment, too many people don't have an option to use anything but a printer to get things done. Many things are electronic now, and more things are going electronic all the time.

People have been talking about the paperless office for decades. I seriously doubt I will live to see a computer that does not support printing. There are still far too many applications which do need paper, and for which there is no alternative. As a school music teacher, I cannot see handing out iPads or the equivalent to all the parents showing up to a concert instead of a paper programme to be honest. Not in the next 50 years anyway.

Install Perian and Quicktime will be able to play alomst everything you throw at it.

Much nicer than VLC/MPlayer or other similar apps because it's instant launch and minimalistic UI !

btw.. on my mb pro quicktime+perian uses less power then vlc so it lasts longer in the train :)

Mplayer and VLC play X264 much better than Perian, much faster too. I use mplayer for all the x264 needs, and Quicktime for everything else.

I'm only seeing the September 15th release in my dev center. Registered iOS developer, not Mac.

yup only one I see and only one I have ever seen so us iOS developers have only received 1 build and it crashed 2 of our computers putting them in kernel panic so had to restore to previous via time machine so I sure wouldn't install the Sept 15th release in the iOS dev portal..

You are using QuickTime anytime you play video in iTunes.

Apple should just buy VLC

Apple cannot buy what is not for sale, nor does Apple need to. It has enough programmers of its own who should know at least as much as those behind VLC.

For playback, I much prefer Movist. More versatile than QT even with Perian installed and less clunky looking than VLC on OSX, which really needs to lose that floating palette look since forever.

I like Movist as well. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

I'm feeling both 10.6.5 and 4.2 land Wednesday, or maybe Tuesday night, after the polls close. ;)

What? AirPrint? You mean Apple hasn't deprecated printers yet?

:p

I will say that I sure wish printer manufacturers would simplify and unify their drivers, instead of the current wad of drivers we have to carry around now. In fact, printers really haven't changed much in the last 6-7 years-- why couldn't there be a single industry standard printer interface so that all we would need is one driver?

Faster? 48 frames per second instead of just 24? :D What i want to say is "better" and "faster" are very weak arguments.

But what happens when a manufacturer needs to implement that *revolutionary* new feature, and cannot because all of the drivers are generic. There are so many reasons why drivers (on Windows) and kexts (on OS X) need to be specific to the printer/device. Would it be better for some people? Yes, but when HP or whomever decides to release their printer with some revolutionary new feature, that driver won't support it.

And in many ways, Apple is trying to standardize printer drivers, with AirPrint being exclusively managed on the printer, with a tiny end on the device sending the information. Basically, it's up to the printer to do what it will, but nothing changes about how the information is sent. Apple is doing what you are asking, but it will likely never support older printers. There are tons of usage cases, but businesses are likely to have print servers, so drivers aren't an issue. Consumers likely only have one printer and don't know or care the difference. It's a small group that is protesting, but Apple wants to draw everyone into their format, which is going towards AirPrint. I'm also sure that AirPrint will be an open technology eventually, free for everyone to implement (like, instead of just iPhones, iPods, and iPads printing via AirPrint, we could see Windows machines, Macs, and Android devices all using an open AirPrint technology.)

I think you should have thought this statement through a little more, you're getting hammered. I've never seen so many reply's to one quote on here.

Anyway, I use quick time and like it.
:apple::apple::apple:

OMFG how long will we have to wait and how many subtopics will there be till it's released this is slow and aggravating

This is retarded why should we wait till 4.2 I'm sure you all planned it to be supportive when released but still this wait is stupid.
I guess waiting to get out all the kinks helps but if it doesn't you wasted your programming time effort & possibly money.

Were you stomping your feet while typing this, too?

Just chill . . . it'll be here.

why do you want them to rush an OS update that could possibly ruin your mac if not tested right?

Yeah, the minimalistic UI that is more complicated than MPlayer's and less powerful sure makes waiting for Perian to load the entire MKV file into memory before starting playback worth it.

Apple really needs to fix Quicktime.
