Apple today released macOS Big Sur 11.6.1, a minor update to the macOS Big Sur operating system that first came out in November 2020. macOS Big Sur 11.6.1 comes roughly six weeks after the launch of macOS Big Sur 11.6.

The new ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌macOS Big Sur‌‌‌‌‌‌ 11.6.1 update can be downloaded to all eligible Macs using the Software Update section of System Preferences.

According to Apple's release notes, the update "improves the security of macOS" and is recommended for all users. It serves as a security update for those users who can not or don't want to upgrade to macOS Monterey. There is also a similar Security Update 2021-007 for macOS Catalina users.

Seems the Big Sur installer is hidden from the Mac App Store already – on to Monterey it is! :)

How to create a bootable installer for macOS

Just applying 11.6.1 to my M1 mini - had to redo the download as it failed. Left it applying while I had lunch - and when I came back there were two prompts - one to close Firefox windows, one I think was about not being able to restart. Trouble being, keyboard had stopped working and mouse was unusable (slow and seemed half-unconnected).

I suggest you remain in attendance.

Machine did restart and asked if I wanted to tell Apple about the unexpected restart.

Try to apply again and managed to catch prompts before keyboard/mouse stopped working. Just got to 100% of progress bar and waiting…

Next reboot/update took about fifteen minutes. Done.

The first old system update that is not titled ‘Security Update 20xx-0xx’.
Ha ha for some of us that’s our world now!

Those of us stuck on Catalina (like my 2012 mini) just got
a) Security u/d,
b) compatibility patch for iOS and
c) Safari 15.1 (I installed that a few days ago.

Kinda sad my top end mini didn’t make cut for Big Sur or Monterey, it can for sure handle the processor and memory requirements.

Still hopeful a small update will come to enable hide my email functionality within Catalina macOS.

Since the last update, the printer icon stays on the dock, but the window hidden, after printing.

Hopefully this has been fixed.

This has indeed been fixed in 11.6.1.

I print a lot of labels for mailing, so having to manually close the print queue every time was a pain. Problem solved!

I see Monterey installer in the app store, it says "Works on this MacBook Pro" but once I click "Get" I get a "Update not found" this on my MacBook which is listed in the not supported hardware.. go figure.

I was advised by our IT department to NOT install this updated. They are getting reports of many users getting the machines in a stuck state when rebooting after update.

My 2020 M1 air has been sitting on a ~85% progress bar on the loading screen after this update for about half an hour now. Am I going to have to reinstall? I'm afraid to force shut this down. ?‍♂️

Yes, even when I go to the hidden Big Sur page on the App store, and try to download, it says the Update is not found: The requested version of macOS is not available. I tried with other installers to install it and it failed. Perhaps there is a bug in the in 11.6.1 installer because many people have had failed installations.
