Apple today released a macOS Big Sur 11.7.4 update, which is available to those who are still running the macOS Big Sur operating system. macOS Big Sur 11.7.4 comes a few weeks after the launch of macOS Big Sur 11.7.3, which was released alongside macOS Ventura 13.2.

Today's update addresses an ongoing issue with Safari icons. The Big Sur 11.7.3 update introduced a bug that prevented icons from showing up in the Safari Favorites section. Spaces where icons normally appear were blank, making it difficult to see which sites are in the Favorites section at a glance.

According to Apple's security software page, the update includes important security fixes as well. Apple has also released a Safari 16.3.1 update that includes the same fix for Safari Favorite icons.

Build number is 20G1120.

Safari 16.3.1 for Big Sur has build number 16614.4.6.11.7 and you can download it here: https://swcdn.apple.com/content/dow...sfss53vk636jizy6ck/Safari16.3.1BigSurAuto.pkg

Doesn't seem to be one for Monterey yet though.

There was confusion before on the previous version of Safari for Big Sur with build number 16614.4.6.11.6 which came only 2 days ago. The security webpage https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT213638 previously referred to it as being version 16.3.1 whereas it was in fact version 16.3. They changed it back to version 16.3 the next day.

It is highly unusual for updates for Safari to come out in such quick succession, especially for older systems.

This is wonderful news! Apple has been getting better at serving their last few OS' lately... Big Sur became a decent OS and some systems that cannot go further. Appreciate this fix and was not expecting it.

bug in the browser - update your whole OS... just Apple things...

I want to be optimistic and say it’s because of the sealed system volume and it’s superior for security. But it is crazy that in 2023 the most advanced desktop operating system on Earth takes a full ten minute, completely inoperable reboot for such a small issue. Ten minutes if you’re lucky.

Damn, i updated my Macbook Retina 2017 to Ventura thinking that it was a bad instalation of Safari..

I'm thinking in downgrade to Big Sur. Really don't like Ventura

What don't you like about Ventura? Tell us.

Other than a few extra crashes, which are problems with the apps, not the OS, Ventura has been virtually identical to past versions. Apple has mastered incremental updates.

Stage Manager is fantastic, but totally optional. The delayed sending in Mail (to support "Undo Send") takes some getting used to.

it also updates webkit that is used in a lot of other apps for embedded web views just like on iOS

I’m also not a fan of Ventura and would like to downgrade. The new system settings are very confusing structured and the new background activity notification is killing me.

Glad that Apple got this Big Sur macOS update out to fix the bugs people have been having. Will install it and give it a try. I am not a big fan of Ventura. Don't like the confusing new menus in Ventura either.

Are there macOS fixes included that instead of a Safari update release they released an update to Big Sur?

It is more related to performance in my rMacbook 12" 2017. My Mac is already weak in terms of power and with Ventura I feel it more slow than Big Sur for example. I'd love to use it with High Sierra but High Sierra is now just too old.

Also, as SueperDrive, the configuration panel is really really weird to me

Why does Macrumors keep missing key info regarding this? The problem also caused blank Safari extension icons! Those are fixed as well with this update.

I get not always getting rumors right - nature of the business, but missing facts???

My parents Have Big Sur and it is the last major update their Mac can update to. Does this update update the certificates for web sites? Many pages do not load with an expired certificate message. The Mac still works fine but it is difficult for my mother who prefers Safari but has to switch to Chrome to access sites she frequents often.
