Apple Releases macOS Catalina 10.15.5 With Battery Health Management Features, Fix for Finder Freezing

WARNING!!!!

Downloaded this on my 2019 15 inch. Update went to reboot and now computer is black, nothing on the screen.

Had an issue like this with my wife's MacBook Air with T2 chip with 10.15.4. I tracked down this article and found out the computer was still alive, it just was in a state where nothing I did gave any feedback until I booted it to be seen by the Apple Configurator app. The issue appeared to be a T2 chip problem and Configurator fixed it.

Using Configurator was my last resort as I'd tried all the other troubleshooting tricks. I suggest trying the Revive option rather than the Restore as Revive apparently takes a lot less time than Restore. I accidentally did Restore and spent a number of hours reinstalling macOS and restoring from a time machine backup.

My wife thought I was a genius when she walked into the room to see the previously lifeless Air, that Apple Support had suggested mailing in for repair, working again. It was very cool.

I believe all the steps are in the documentation. You do have to have another Mac running Configurator to plug the bricked one into and it is so exciting to see the bricked one show up on the Configurator window!

Good luck!

My wife has a 2017 iMac so i’ll try this asap and report back! Thanks!

Do I really need this battery option enabled? I feel like I have been doing just fine before any kind of Apple optimization of my battery. Just don't trust them after the iOS fiasco with "optimization".

So, they didn't fix the issue with the amd gpu kicking on when connected to an external monitor. I don't need that kind of graphics performance (or heat) when using web apps. I'm running a base model 16" macbook pro. Just bought it from the refurb store a little over a week ago.

Battery degradation is not a linear process. Just because it degraded 12% in 7 years doesn’t mean it will take another 7 to degrade a further 12%.

As far as I know, you might be waiting for that “bug fix” forever. There is no hardware connection from the Intel GPU to the external video output.

(Sorry if I’m not donating my time even further by spending time searching for “the science” to link, as some posters here appear to demand; if perchance you’re one of those, we can discuss my going rates for consulting, and if you’re not, just pretend I never said anything.)

I thought I read on another macrumors thread they corrected it in beta 5. I could be wrong.

Same issue for me after updating on MacBook Pro 2018 15 inch. Computer is completely bricked and can’t even go into recovery. My older, other two machines took the update just fine.

I just like your spotted cow logo haha
I had that issue with 10.15.4. I had to send it to a third party service center because of the stay-in-place orders. Hopefully now with Apple Stores reopening you can get yours fixed sooner if it doesn’t start up.

Will this remove the persistent "1 update" from the menu and the 1 badge from the System Preferences icon?
Y'know, I didn't have this issue until this update, and now that I've run the update, it won't go away. *sighs* The thing they're supposed to be fixing is the thing that now doesn't function right on my Macbook. :/

Update: @jphall THANK YOU! See this is what MR forums are all about... helping each other in times of need! Followed this Apple help article you posted carefully and my laptop is now on and finishing the 10.15.5 update!

If anyone is afraid of updating to 10.15.5 inadvertently (like I am), the following Terminal command will block the update:

softwareupdate --ignore "macOS Catalina 10.15.5 Update"

Does anyone know if they are working on a fix for people who use mail.app with office 365? Mail and accountsd runs at 300% and brings the computer to a grinding halt. I have a top of the line 16” and I have to force quit accountsd every day.

On my Macbook 2018 15" i don't have the battery management option, maybe for the newest macbook range only?

Update: SMC reset fixed it and gives me the option.

Perfect timing. I just had a brand new battery installed in my mid-2014 15” due to slight swelling.

Supposedly it won't work on a computer this "old". Good thing people have mentioned the Al Dente app here, which is much better than Apple's implementation, since you can actually control the charge level (what an alien notion, having control of your own hardware!)

Anyone try with it on a Late 2015 iMac? Did it go boom? I’ll give mine a try tomorrow.

Update:

So my iMac was updated yesterday, and the first time in months it didn’t reboot on it’s own from sleep. This started with whatever OS it was before Catalina and continued with each update in Catalina until yesterday. Maybe it is too soon to report a fix.

At least I never got the error message asking me to forward a report to Apple when I woke it from sleep this afternoon. So for the two or three hours I used it no reboot crash after the OS update.

Before the update I usually got a report on a wake from sleep that the iMac had rebooted. Even after a full power shutdown rebooting usually gave me a crash/reboot 20 minutes into turning the Mac on.

I tried many times to re-install whatever OS I was running. I reset PRAM and SIM once or twice. I even purchased more. RAM wondering if I was running out of memory.

Well if this latest OS actually fixed my crash/rebooting blues I will be one happy dude.

I use my MacBook, iPad and iPhone plugged in when I can, which is most time, in past months is all day long.

My iPhone 8 Plus, purchased 16 months ago, has "Maximum Capacity 99%", so I really don't care about Battery Health Management, I disable it.
I think those battery health measurements are kind of approximate. The battery in my iPhone 8 sat in the high 90s for a long time and then dropped rather precipitously into the mid-80s.
