Monterey really does have to be the trashest trash that Apple has prematurely vomited out as a desktop OS, I can't believe this thing shipped. I've never been so disappointed in 20 years of using Apple products and being a huge fan of the company.
I honestly haven't noticed. My mac is getting old, so I just use my work PC be productive. And Chrome on my Mac has been working well for most of what I do online, but still, I've been hearing about way to many bugs, so I'm holding off on updating to a new laptop until there's a 14" M2/M3.

My Dell from work is much newer (i7-8665U/16GB), than my 2014 MBP, and it's not that stable, even though I like Windows 11. The fan will pick up without too much going on.

People have said the same about Catalina and every version of macOS released in the last few years they've had problems with.

Installs as 12.2.1 (21D62) for anyone who still follows this stuff.

Fair warning to anyone installing this update - you might run into missing printer issues. Seems like some bigger changes to "printer & scanners" (particularly the print queue) that requires reinstall for most AirPrint capable printers. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

Can someone make the people giving those frequent trash updates a Go understand that their seeming carelessness is actually affecting peoples lives? So many people that have to sit and wait with their 1 to 2 to 3 and 4, 5 to 6 and beyond thousand dollar machines for an update to fix yet another stupid problem that should have never been in the first place. Every day I think about how a couple dozen people make the lives of millions just a little bit (more) miserable after they paid them top dollar not to. I hate my $2k MacBook Pro because it’s just expensive trash with all those bugs and glitches. Same goes for my $1.3k iPhone (and my $5 Apple Music subscription but hey)
Whose heads have to role to lure a Snow Leopard?

NT was solid, especially 4.0 with Service Pack 1.

However Windows Me (or Millenium) on the other end... ?

ME was dependent on new drivers. I had heard about issues if you didn't have ME supported drivers but I had them so it was relatively fine like 95 through and including ME. NT, on the other hand, would just BSoD looking at it and peripheral choices were few so standardized like ATI graphics. Anyhow, with Big Sur/Monterey's memory leaks, PSoD, broken palm rejection, Touch ID wake on long sleep and other issues it feels like reliving NT. Windows 10 is close to Linux stable. Haven't used Windows 11 enough to judge.

Yeah, I'm absolutely the least impressed with this release and I've been hanging around since 9.2.

Thanks for the warning. I just checked on all of my Macs and my HP printer was missing from two of them.

Well, to be honest, Sierra was the last time I felt comfortable using macOS, and it was my first time using macOS (on a personal machine). My trust started to slip with High Sierra. Mojave was a total desaster for me, and everything that followed didn’t live up to Sierra, including BS (fitting) and now Monterey. There are still stupid and unpached bugs from, whatever shipped with the TouchBar Macs, that affect the touchbar, so they won’t ever be fixed, bet. Monterey picks up where BS left off.
Did you notice that Apple doesn’t brag about their customer satisfaction anymore? Guess why.

This update had a very weird side effect... It deleted my Safari Tech Preview.

edit: And, it appears the download is currently messed up as well.

Software development is complex, much more complex than making hardware. Yes, they have been a lot of bugs the last 10 years, but I am sure it was like that before too. Software has become very complicated. The difference to before is that now Apple has almost 2 billion users (including iOS) and a much higher visibility. Even the slightest issue will become public and of course, people will just do what they do better, namely complain and rant.
Just make a step back and think what the Apple ecosystem is offering you and what features you use every day. Think about the most simple tasks you perform.
Then try to think about how you would accomplish these tasks on a different platform. Even better, try to use a different platform and see how it works for you. After that you will appreciate Apple even more.
I have had to deal with an iCloud bug for almost two years (Safari bookmarks not syncing), but still never lost hope or never thought to go to Windows. Eventually Apple fixed my issue.
Another thing to consider is that yearly releases are difficult to manage. I would very much prefer if Apple said that it will go back to a two year release cycle, or maybe just announce each year what's in the pipeline for the year to come, then just release new features when they are ready, with no real major versioning. The problem is unfortunately that marketing doesn't like things like that, because it makes it more difficult to advertise.

I like to blame it on COVID-19 WFH for software quality hitting bottom with too many distractions from writing solid code. COVID-19 mutations keep occurring so it may be a while to recover.

You’re forgetting Catalina, which was known at first for its numerous issues.

But yeah, you were lucky to start your journey on Sierra. I started mine on Snow Leopard, known for being one of the most stable releases. And I kinda agree that both Mavericks (10.9) and Sierra (10.12) are the most stable releases I’ve used after Snow Leopard. Smooth as silk. They were both minor releases focused on bug fixes and performance.

I restarted again after the first kernel panic, and then I got another kernel panic 🤨
Looking at the crash report it's referencing CORE 0 as the one that panicked, and to check the full backtrace for details, which shows the Kernel Extensions in backtrace, 'com.apple.driver.AppleInterruptController', 'com.apple.driver.AppleARMPlatform', and 'com.apple.driver.AppleARMWatchdogTimer' as being the culprits. I've seen these referenced a lot over the course of using Monterey in many crash reports.

I'm also still seeing some stuttering in movement with my Apple Magic Trackpad.

Updated my Watch Series 6, iPhone 13 Pro, and 14" MacBook Pro. All good.

I would prefer a tick/tock cadence from Apple. Say one year they release a feature loaded update, then the following year just polish the OS, with the polished OS receiving two years of security updates. That way users who value stability and bug free use can stick to updating once every two years.

I don't think this would be that difficult for Apple to implement. I also feel like iOS and macOS are such mature operating systems that Apple is really scraping around for ideas to implement. Now with the FaceTime improvements, universal control, new HomeKey/Drivers license stuff there's almost nothing left I want improved. Just keep squashing bugs, improving stability, securing the OS.

Windows is no better, in fact their bi-annual releases are far more buggy from my experience.

A yes, Catalina. Indeed I forgot about it because my MBP was completely useless that year, I literally almost never (got to) use it. Fun times.
Last year we got a 2014 MBP “handed down” because, well, it oughta be replaced. I restored it to its original firmware, Mavericks, and was blown away by how incredibly smooth everything was. I was really debating on if I should “upgrade” it. Eventually, I did, because compatibility and everything, but man. My 2017 MBP with its freaking Touch Bar didn’t run this good out of the box…
I really hope Apple has something in stock for us this year. But I’ve been saying this since Mojave and that obviously didn’t work out 😂

Apart from the memory leak issue I've actually found Monterey to be rock solid. Yet to have an issue with it on my 14" MacBook Pro.

FWIW, I've still got the recent Safari Tech Preview installed. Didn't go away for me...

I think if that would happen the adoption rate for the new software would drop drastically. New features gets people excited thus they tend to upgrade right away.

People get excited for new features so we should release half baked software every year so that the software never reaches an acceptable point of stability? This makes me want to vomit, that a bunch of imbeciles attracted by new features without care for the core functionality of a desktop OS, are driving its development
