While we have to wait a bit longer for the macOS Ventura launch, Apple today released macOS Monterey 12.6. macOS Monterey 12.6 is the sixth major update to macOS Monterey and it comes a couple months after the launch of macOS Monterey 12.5.

The ‌‌‌‌‌‌macOS Monterey‌‌‌ 12.6 update can be downloaded on all eligible Macs using the Software Update section of System Preferences.

macOS Monterey 12.6 addresses a number of kernel vulnerabilities as well as issues with maps, iMovie, ATS, MediaLibrary, and PackageKit.

Apple says that it is aware that one kernel vulnerability was actively exploited, which means that it is important for all macOS Monterey users to update to the new version of the operating system as soon as possible.

Apple has also released a macOS Big Sur 11.7 update with security fixes.

Wonder if these are under the hood updates to improve compatibility with iOS 16 sharing the same cloud back end. I heard reports of people running Monterey losing access to their photo libraries when turning on shared libraries and such.
They're going to be mostly security updates. iCloud Shared Photo libraries are not enabled in this release of iOS 16 anyway.

I do wonder why I always have to download these big updates separately for all of my Macs. Why can't the first download be shared with other Macs on the same network? We don't all have superfast (or even fast) internet. Would be a nice showcase of Apple's magic at work.

You can do that through "Content Caching" in System Prefs

Isn't that what the "Content Caching" option does in Sharing preferences?

Edit: Ah dang it, 3 seconds too slow :D

When will Apple release an update that turns the backlight on keyboard at boot-time so I can see the darn keyboard when I type my password?
All these updates are great but such a trivial feature - to be able to type your password in the dark - it's ridiculous that it's still not working.

Or maybe I am missing something and it can be activated???

(When you have FileVault enabled - keyboard stays full dark)

FYI, I had the updater hang while my M1 MBP was plugged into my TB4 dock. I Unplugged the dock and everything got moving.

I saw similar behavior with a previous update. Might be the dock, might be one of my peripherals. Either way, sharing to help others.

It is a bit curious. Monterey 12.6 update just to be annouced but yesterday I update to Monterey 12.6 ! and I look now, I have the 12.6 21G115 like the last here. Someone know this mysterious update? Thanks for reading.

Is this the same file as the normal (updated) installer for Monterey?
So, this one? https://apps.apple.com/us/app/macos-monterey/id1576738294
Your link resolves to the Mac App Store, where 12.6 is offered. The link I had initially posted is for Apple's CDN servers. Their direct link is made public specifically for other apps like the App Store® so the correct version is offered. That's how other utility apps are able to offer you the option to have a Direct Installer file or .pkg

Again, nothing against anyone else, like Mr Macintosh, just sayin' I always prefer to get my Operating System Installers directly from the 1st party as opposed to a third party,
