Apple today released macOS Tahoe 26.5.1, a small update to the macOS Tahoe operating system that came out last year. macOS Tahoe 26.5.1 comes three weeks after Apple released macOS Tahoe 26.5.

Mac owners can download the software by opening the System Settings app and then navigating to the Software Updates section.

According to Apple's release notes for the update, macOS Tahoe 26.5.1 addresses an unexpected shutdown issue affecting certain enterprise users on M5 Macs.
This update addresses an issue for enterprise users where Macs with an M5 chip could expectedly shut down when using certain content filtering network extensions.
macOS 27 is right around the corner, with Apple set to unveil the next major macOS update at the WWDC 2026 keynote on Monday, June 8.

Not showing for me yet, though assuming that it is just an update server sync delay …?

[Edit] It did show up 15 minutes later.

It is available on my M1 MBP.
I'm hoping it addresses the issue on this machine, and my M4 mini failing, to unlock using my Apple Watch. Which was working fine until very recently. Now it tends to say it is using my watch, but then goes back to ask for password.

This crap is still unable to send SMS from the Mac...
I've had no issues sending SMS from my Mac for as long as it was possible to do so (at least 5 years?) In fact I just send one to a friend with Android that doesn't support RCS, using Messages on my Mac Studio running Tahoe 26.5. Green bubble. I routinely get notification SMS texts from my doctors, reminding me about appointments, etc, those are SMS and I reply to confirm all the time. What you may have to do is delete the conversation on your iphone (it should disappear on your Mac as well), and start a new conversation. When RCS support came out several years ago, existing conversations that were previously SMS, sometimes had to be deleted. When starting a new conversion, RCS support was recognized, and all messages moving forward were RCS enabled. On your iPhone make sure the option 'Use SMS when iMEssage not available' is enabled
