"Apple today updated that firmware, with the version number going from 5A5282d to 5A5304a."

The current firmware stated in the article is incorrect. It's not 5A5282d - it's just 5A282d

Does the Pre-Release AirPod Beta option appear under the Developer menu? The only option on my Developer menu is enabling/disabling dev mode.

Edit: I am using 16b3.

Well.. there is this right in the post

According to Apple, the beta firmware includes improvements to Automatic Switching
This! I hope it finally works as advertised. Right now the way my AirPods Max tend to switch is completely unpredictable and I have to manually force them out of the stranglehold of my iPhone and connect them manually to my iPad Pro. Sometimes rebooting the AirPods Max is my only option. Doesn't seem to be as complicated with the AirPods Pro - the somehow just work as intended. Maybe my Max's are faulty?

Across the yard? Are you dropping them vertically or horizontally? 🤔

In my experience, any which way. The best I had happen was one stubbornly stayed in the case, but usually they are scattering everywhere. The magnet needs to be stronger, but there is very little real estate to place a larger magnet. And a mechanical latch would likely break or be filled with detritus. A third party case is the sollution, depending on how they keep it closed.

Going third party is the way to go...

It does for me, once I have connected via USB and have X-Code open in my Mac.

Where does one see the current firmware version? My AirPod Pros say version 4E71. Is that old?

I hope this improves things a bit on the switching as stated. I can have a video playing on my iPad with airpods appropriately connected and be typing a message or something on my laptop. I get prompted constantly on the laptop to connect the AirPods even with the video still playing on the iPad. Then if my daughter turns on the Apple TV, my AirPods will keep showing up in the top right corner there asking to connect. I guess it’s good that none of them actually connect without the prompt (except the phone), but it’s still annoying to have them try to switch when they are actively in use.

I hope this improves the connectivity. Half the time when I take out my AirPods only one of them gets paired and emits sound. Have to place them back in and take out again to hopefully have them both get paired. Very annoying. Anyone else experiencing this? Have AirPods 2.

Man, I can't figure this out. in what app do I go into Settings > Developer? Xcode? On my phone? Where? I can't seem to find this step.

EDIT: Nvm. It's on the phone. Found it.

i did all the instructions right but still not updating from official.🤷‍♂️

So they CAN force updates? Why not for everyone? It's damned frustrating to watch your AirPods defy your very existence and refuse to update. GRRR...:cool:
For quite sometime now updates can be forced by plugging any device—AirPods, Siri Remotes, etc into either a Mac or iPad via a lightning to USB-C cable. For this particular AirPods beta firmware however, putting your iPhone into developer mode via xCode 14 (also in beta) and then enabling beta OTA updates for whichever AirPod is connected to the phone via Bluetooth at the time, is required.

To obtain these beta firmwares, I connected both my AirPods Max and AirPods Pro to my iPhone via Bluetooth, then connected my iPhone to my MacBook Pro. I downloaded the xCode 14 beta. Then the Developer tab appeared in my iPhone settings, and I scrolled down to the bottom to enable beta updates for both headphones (there was a separate toggle for each).

Then I plugged both my AirPods Pro and AirPods Max to my MacBook Pro, and within a couple of minutes both AirPods had updated to the latest beta.

Similarly, when Apple released a stable firmware update to my Siri Remotes last week, I plugged both of mine into my MacBook Pro, and they updated within a couple of minutes.

I don’t know why sites such as these do not mention this force-update option with firmware releases; this method has worked for at least a year or more. Spread the word!

Created huge connection issues for me on AirPods Max. Taken them out of the case and they will show connected but they won't wake from sleep. Sometimes it's a simple fix by depressing the 2 buttons. Other times its a night mare to get them to wake. Hopefully the full release corrects this.

Is firmware version 5A304a the latest versin for Airpods Max? My headphones are no longer usable without repairing each and everytime I want to use them. Just wondering if there was a new released firmware to allow them to wake properly from sleep.

That reminds me the Auto-head detection issues actually. For once the AirPods Max has detected the only playback will be enabled.
Because if it shows connected it won't be in sleep mode anymore.

For workaround
You have few options.
1). Check out online method how to remove each headphone unit from headband. And using light source to check out any possible clog that might stuck in 4 pin female connectors from functioning.
2). Prepare a cleaning process on 4 pin male connectors that located on each end of headband.
3). Once any movement has been detected awhile set in sleep mode. A green light will indicate AirPods Max wake from sleep model.

Thanks will give the cleaning a try.

Welcome.
Good to hear you beck if that actually help.
I utilized some ISO to clean teh connectors and and witha small device was able to clean down in connection. SO far it seems to wake now from sleep. Will try it out ove rthe next few days. Thanks again.

For awhile now it’s been known that you can trigger an update of all peripherals by connecting them to a Mac or iPad. I’ve gotten immediate updates to my AirPods Pro, Max, and Siri Remotes this way—try it!
