Apple this week released another firmware update for the iPhone Air MagSafe Battery, but there are no specific details about what it includes.

The latest iPhone Air MagSafe Battery firmware has a version number of 8B32, up from 8B25. In the Settings app on the iPhone Air, the new firmware is listed as version 101.0, while the previous firmware was listed as version 99.0 in the app.

  • New Firmware: 101.0 (Version) / 8B32 (Build)
  • Previous Firmware: 99.0 (Version) / 8B25 (Build)
Apple does not share release notes for iPhone Air MagSafe Battery firmware updates, so it is unclear what is new. However, it would be reasonable to assume the update includes performance and stability improvements, and/or bug fixes.

iPhone Air MagSafe Battery firmware updates automatically install in the background over time, while the accessory is charged and actively being used.

You can check the version number of the ‌MagSafe‌ Battery's firmware by attaching it to an ‌iPhone Air‌, opening the Settings app on the device, and tapping on General → About → ‌iPhone Air‌ ‌MagSafe‌ Battery. If you see 101.0, it is up to date.

Rumor has it the new firmware for the external batteries is just a testing ground for battery code for other hardware...just getting maximum value for it by getting it to production and having someone pay for it. Then they will attempt to reuse it in a new hardware component to keep the margins low.

That or they finally did a battery of tests...stop snickering...and found out they should tweak something.

Earlier this week I was going to talk to Apple Support but didnt have the time to go back and forth. It is hit and miss if my battery has a charge or is empty. I rarely use it for my Air but when I need it it's 50-50 or worse if it will have any charge. Hoping this helps.

You can manually force an update by following the below instructions from Apple.

I have just done mine, the only thing it seems to have changed is name of it coming on on the widget to iPhone Air MagSafe Battery.

  • Your iPhone Air MagSafe Battery will update its firmware automatically while it is attached to iPhone. Or update the firmware using a Mac or an iPad model with a USB-C connector and running macOS 26 or iPadOS 26. Detach the iPhone Air MagSafe Battery from your iPhone, plug one end of a USB-C cable into the connector on your iPhone Air MagSafe Battery, and plug the other end into your Mac or iPad. If prompted, click “Allow accessory to connect”. The firmware update will take about 5 minutes.

Does this mean that Apple can change your battery capacity to 0 mAh when they think it's time for you to buy a new one. 😉

No it doesn’t from the quick test I have done.
You are correct. Despite having the firmware update, it still doesn't do passthrough. (I did feature request passthrough charging when I got my Air initially (I own a 17 Pro Max now but kept the battery)). 🙂

(Started using the MagSafe (vs being plugged into the wall) - you can tell by the green shade with lightning symbol). The Block green line with no shade = passthrough charging). I have a desk job... <cough>.

Oh well - it's still the coolest MagSafe battery I own (temperature wise).

Thank you, this worked for me where I had been unable to update the previous firmware.

The update did in fact, take less than five minutes and started as soon as I plugged in the device. You can tell when it’s finished because it will prompt you again to connect the battery when the battery has restarted.

Would be great to know what happens exactly with these updates. If it helps in any way with better thermal management, then it is good.
