The minimum for Tiger is 512MB to be anywhere efficient. I am ordering mine with 1GB just to make sure it is going to run smooth for every day use.

It seems that I should upgrade the memory. I am thinking of adding 1GB but the memory at Apple is *very* expensive. I checked some previous posts regarding memory. Should I go to www.crucial.com or www.datamem.com? I looked at their websites and I cannot find the memory stick for the new iBook. Should I wait? Or I can buy any memory stick closely matches the 1GB memory stick descripted at the apple site? I heard that stability of macs are quite sensitive to the quality of memory.

Has the trackpad changed it's feel now that it does the dual finger thing?
(is the surface like the PB surface?)

Feels a little different. I have never used the new PBs, so I can't compare with them. I had iScroll 2 on my old iBook. The Apple software/new trackpad is actually a bit less sensitive than iScroll 2 for 2-finger scrolling, but it is more manageable than iScroll 2 when you have both vertical and horizontal scrolling turned on. So I guess overall it's a little better..

Sweet! I really appreciate it. I'd say that's "significantly" faster. :) You're the first guy I know of who's posted Xbench results for the new iBooks - congrats. So far, so good.

Do you have any game benchmarks you could share with us, like the UT 2003 demo? I'm sure everyone would love to see how the Mobility Radeon 9550 performs.

Honestly, I don't know that I'll have time to get to that (at least, not before someone else does) because I'm really busy with work (and I don't have any demos like that installed on my machines). I actually tried to download the UT2004 demo, but the file was corrupted or something...wouldn't unzip properly. I don't have time to try to figure out what's wrong with it. Sorry. Also, with a real app like UT 2003, the fact that I have downgraded my 1.2 Ghz to 256 MB of RAM could start to affect the accuracy of the comparison...

1. What is this Quartz Extreme mode and how do I know if it is on?
2. Also how would you enable it?
3. Does it cause any damage to the computer?

Short answers:
1. It accelerates the drawing of stuff within windows (whereas the older Quartz Extreme accelerates the compositing/transformations of different windows after they have been drawn). At least in theory.
2. If you install the XCode Developer Tools, there is an app called Quartz Debug. You can enable it with that app.
3. No. Some people have reported seeing minor drawing bugs while it's open though (I personally have not).

Take it for what it's worth. Yeah, that's Panther, and this is Tiger, but macrumors12345's iBook does beat that PowerBook 1.5 with the Radeon 9600 by 10 points.

Um, keep in mind that I did not run the disk test, which is always going to be slow on a laptop. So the overall score I reported is *not* comparable with the normal XBench overall score on other laptops. You'd have to compare at the level of individual categories/tests (e.g., CPU test vs CPU test, memory test vs memory test, etc).

I for one think the iBook update was good - however I was hoping for more VRAM. Isnt it annoying to know that Apple would have had a real killer laptop game-wise with their new iBook if they upped the VRAM to 64MB or 128MB? :p

Stuck in CHINA!

My iBook says that it shipped out on the 27th but it has been sitting at the FedEx facility in China for two days. I chose the 2day shipping which would mean it should get here today..and i dont think thats gonna happen. What is taking so long!!

Mine also said it shipped on the 27th, and about 30 mins ago it arrived at Arnhem, the Netherlands (delivering to UK). Hopefully yours will have arrived at a Hub around about now too

So, you assume that what is happening with your iBook means that everyone else is in the same situation?

My new iBook has left China, as has others. purell16's might not be in your "alledged" delayed bulk shipment.

You assume too much.

Alledged? Its true, the bulk shipment of those shipping by FedEx have been delayed.

So should I wait before ordering the new ibook? I am planning to buy an ipod using the student union rebate and it requires us to return the UPC labels on the product boxes. I am afraid that this delay would void my rebate :(

I'm not even sure now, the guy that told me, says his was picked up and is on its way, who knows, just order anyway. If there is a delay it shouldn't be for long. I'll let you know if they ship mine, but just order, it won't be a big delay, probably not even a delay at all.

The delay would not void your rebate. You have like 45 days from invoice date to mail your rebate to Apple, so it would have to be one heck of a delay for you to run into any problems. The key is that you must purchase iPod and iBook on the same sales receipt.

You can also probably get these things at any Apple Store by now, you know. If you bring your student ID, they will give you the student discount on the spot. And they give you a nice rebate form and two copies of the receipt to make things even easier.

what about a high school id?

JonMaker said:
Sorry, but no. You must be enrolled in a "qualifying post-secondary institution" to get the student discount.

really? ive seen some people on here do it with a high school id.

I think you can qualify as a high school student...when you visit the apple education site and click on the student union icon you can either select your k-12 school, or post secondary college....
